Abstract

A staple cartridge assembly includes, one, a plurality of staples movable between unfired positions and fired positions and, two, a layer, such as a tissue thickness compensator and/or a buttress material, for example, wherein the staples are configured to at least partially capture the layer when the staples are moved between the unfired positions and the fired positions. The layer can include a cushioning member at least partially extending around a peripheral portion of the tissue thickness compensator. The layer can include features which create a flexible transition between the tissue supported by the layer and the staples and the unsupported tissue.

Claims (45)

1. A staple cartridge assembly, comprising:

a cartridge body, comprising:

a deck; and

a plurality of staples movable between unfired positions and fired positions; and

an implantable layer, wherein said staples are configured to at least partially capture said implantable layer when said staples are moved between said unfired positions and said fired positions, said implantable layer comprising:

an implantable first portion, wherein said implantable first portion defines a non-hollow central core of said implantable layer; and

an implantable second portion at least partially surrounding said implantable first portion, wherein said implantable second portion defines a continuous outer perimeter of said implantable layer, wherein said implantable second portion is more flexible than said implantable first portion, and wherein said implantable second portion comprises a plurality of slits,

wherein said staples, in said fired positions, form a staple line along at least a portion of said captured implantable layer, and wherein each said slit is configured to be in a plane crossing said staple line between said staples.

2. The staple cartridge assembly of claim 1 , wherein said implantable first portion comprises a first thickness, wherein said implantable second portion comprises a second thickness, and wherein said first thickness is greater than said second thickness.

3. The staple cartridge assembly of claim 1 , wherein said implantable second portion comprises a scalloped outer edge.

4. The staple cartridge assembly of claim 1 , wherein said implantable second portion comprises a feathered outer edge.

5. The staple cartridge assembly of claim 1 , wherein said implantable second portion comprises a plurality of openings therethrough.

6. The staple cartridge assembly of claim 1 , wherein said implantable second portion comprises a plurality of depressions.

7. The staple cartridge assembly of claim 1 , wherein said implantable second portion comprises an outer edge, and wherein said outer edge comprises a section inwardly rolled towards said implantable first portion.

8. The staple cartridge assembly of claim 1 , wherein said slits comprise a plurality of V-shaped slits.

9. A staple cartridge assembly, comprising:

a cartridge body, comprising:

a deck; and

a plurality of staples movable between unfired positions and fired positions; and

an implantable layer, wherein said staples are configured to at least partially capture said implantable layer when said staples are moved between said unfired positions and said fired positions, said implantable layer comprising:

an implantable first portion, wherein said implantable first portion defines a non-hollow central core of said implantable layer; and

an implantable second portion at least partially surrounding said implantable first portion, wherein said implantable second portion defines a continuous outer perimeter of said implantable layer, and wherein said implantable second portion is more flexible than said implantable first portion,

wherein said implantable second portion comprises a plurality of corrugations.

10. A staple cartridge assembly, comprising:

a cartridge body, comprising:

a deck; and

a plurality of staples movable between unfired positions and fired positions; and

an implantable layer, comprising:

an implantable first portion, wherein said implantable first portion defines a non-hollow central core of said implantable layer, wherein said staples are configured to at least partially capture said implantable first portion when said staples are moved from said unfired positions to said fired positions; and

an implantable second portion, wherein said implantable second portion defines a continuous outer perimeter of said implantable layer, wherein said implantable second portion at least partially surrounds said implantable first portion, wherein said implantable second portion is more flexible than said implantable first portion, and wherein said implantable second portion comprises a plurality of slits,

wherein said staples, in said fired positions, form a staple line along at least a portion of said captured implantable layer, and wherein each said slit is configured to be in a plane crossing said staple line between said staples.

11. The staple cartridge assembly of claim 10 , wherein said implantable second portion comprises a scalloped outer edge.

12. The staple cartridge assembly of claim 10 , wherein said implantable second portion comprises a feathered outer edge.

13. The staple cartridge assembly of claim 10 , wherein said implantable second portion comprises a plurality of slits.

14. The staple cartridge assembly of claim 10 , wherein said implantable second portion comprises a plurality of openings therethrough.

15. A staple cartridge assembly, comprising:

a cartridge body, comprising:

a deck; and

a plurality of staples movable between unfired positions and fired positions; and

a layer, comprising:

a non-hollow central portion, wherein said staples are configured to at least partially capture said non-hollow central portion when said staples are moved from said unfired positions to said fired positions; and

a continuous outer perimeter at least partially surrounding said non-hollow central portion, wherein said continuous outer perimeter is more flexible than said non-hollow central portion, and wherein said continuous outer perimeter comprises a plurality of slits,

wherein said staples, in said fired positions, form a staple line along at least a portion of said captured layer, and wherein each said slit is configured to be in a plane crossing said staple line between said staples.

16. The staple cartridge assembly of claim 15 , wherein said continuous outer perimeter comprises a scalloped outer edge.

17. The staple cartridge assembly of claim 15 , wherein said continuous outer perimeter comprises a feathered outer edge.
