Abstract

One or more arrays of heating elements are configured with insulating regions to prevent the dissipation of heat to unintended regions of a thermochromic substrate. Methods include printing and arranging impressions on a two-sided substrate avoiding bleeding and other problems more-commonly associated with traditional two-sided thermal printing techniques. A simple and reliable thermal printing system is provided for use in ballot marking, including several mechanisms for receiving and detecting the orientation of a substrate within a thermal printing apparatus.

Claims (15)

1. An apparatus for transferring heat to thermally markable portions of a printing medium that are selected by a user, comprising:

a user interface on the printing medium comprising a plurality of boxes for receiving from the user one or more responses to one or more queries, the responses corresponding with thermochromically treated areas on the printing medium;

a detection mechanism that determines the orientation of the printing medium within the apparatus and that maps the location of the thermochromically treated areas using the orientation determination; and

a marking mechanism that, in response to the user responses, activates one or more individual heating elements from an array of heating elements that line up with corresponding thermochromically treated areas on the printing medium to cause the thermochromically treated areas to change appearance.

2. The apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising:

a first plate having the array of heating elements disposed thereon, individual heating elements within the array of heating elements separated from one another by an insulating medium;

at least one additional plate having at least one additional array of heating elements disposed thereon, individual heating elements within the at least one additional array of heating elements being separated from one another by an additional insulating medium;

wherein the first plate and the at least one additional plate are configured substantially adjacent to each other, with the array of heating elements and the second array of heating elements facing one another, to form a slot between the first plate and the at least one additional plate, the slot adapted to accept the printing medium; and

wherein the array of heating elements, the at least one additional array of heating elements, the insulating medium, and the at least one additional insulating medium are configured such that actuation of any one individual heating element marks the thermochromic medium and such that the one individual heating element is sufficiently insulated by the insulating medium or the at least one additional insulating medium that it does not bleed to an unintended region of the printing medium.

3. The apparatus of claim 2 , wherein the first plate and the at least one additional plate comprise printed circuit boards.

4. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein individual heating elements from the array of heating elements comprise surface mount resistors.

5. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein individual heating elements from the array of heating elements comprise shaped traces.

6. The apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising:

a processor for actuating individual heating elements from the array of heating elements.

The apparatus of claim 6 , wherein said detection mechanism comprises at least one sensor coupled to the processor, wherein the sensor is configured to detect the presence of at least one indicator on the printing medium, and wherein the processor is configured to determine the orientation of the printing medium based on the location of the at least one indicator.
