Abstract

A method of providing rewards to a user by storing, in a portable computing device, user profile data which may be accessed by a merchant terminal. A merchant terminal interacts with the portable computing device by accessing the user profile data from the portable computing device, and providing the user with a reward in accordance with the user profile data accessed by the merchant terminal, wherein the merchant terminal provides a relatively greater reward to the user when relatively more user profile data is accessed by the merchant terminal and a relatively lesser reward to the user when relatively less data is accessed by the merchant terminal.

Claims (20)

1. A method of a merchant terminal providing a reward to a user comprising:

a merchant terminal accessing user profile data stored in a portable computing device; and

the merchant terminal providing the user with a reward in accordance with the user profile data accessed by the merchant terminal by uploading the reward into a memory in the portable computing device, wherein the merchant terminal provides a relatively greater reward to the user when relatively more user profile data is accessed by the merchant terminal and a relatively lesser reward to the user when relatively less data is accessed by the merchant terminal.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein the reward provided to the user comprises a coupon, a rebate, a discount or reward points.

3. The method of claim 1 wherein the portable computing device is a smart card.

4. The method of claim 1 wherein the merchant terminal further interacts with the portable computing device by redeeming the reward provided to the user during a purchase transaction with the merchant terminal.

5. The method of claim 4 wherein the reward is redeemed by presenting the computing device to the merchant terminal during the purchase transaction.

6. A reward system comprising:

a. a portable computing device comprising a memory, the memory storing user profile data;

b. a merchant terminal programmed to interact with the portable computing device to

(i) access the user profile data from the portable computing device; and

(ii) provide the user with a reward in accordance with the user profile data accessed by the merchant terminal by uploading the reward into the memory in the portable computing device, wherein the merchant terminal provides a relatively greater reward to the user when relatively more user profile data is accessed by the merchant terminal and a relatively lesser reward to the user when relatively less data is accessed by the merchant terminal.

7. The reward system of claim 6 wherein the reward provided to the user comprises a coupon, a rebate, a discount or reward points.

8. The reward system of claim 6 wherein the portable computing device is a smart card.

9. The reward system of claim 6 wherein the merchant terminal is further programmed to redeem the reward provided to the user.

10. A merchant terminal comprising a portable computing device reader programmed to interact with a portable computing device to:

(i) access user profile data from the portable computing device; and

(ii) provide the user with a reward in accordance with the user profile data accessed by the merchant terminal by uploading the reward into the memory in the portable computing device, wherein the merchant terminal provides a relatively greater reward to the user when relatively more user profile data is accessed by the merchant terminal and a relatively lesser reward to the user when relatively less data is accessed by the merchant terminal.

11. The merchant terminal of claim 10 wherein the reward provided to the user comprises a coupon, a rebate, a discount or reward points.

12. The merchant terminal of claim 10 further programmed to redeem the reward provided to the user.
