Abstract

The present invention is directed to a method and apparatus for an electrotherapeutic system including a first and second electrode. Each electrode includes a respective resistance wherein during operation of the electrotherapeutic system, an electrochemical reaction involving one or both of the electrodes varies the respective resistance of at least one of the electrodes.

Claims (24)

1. A method for delivering a drug dose, the method comprising the steps of:

providing a first electrode having a resistance;

hydrating a first matrix with a first ionic solution, the first matrix being operably attached to the first electrode;

providing a second electrode having a resistance;

adding impurities to a surface of the second electrode;

hydrating a second matrix with a second ionic solution, the second matrix being operably attached to the second electrode; and,

applying a voltage potential between the first electrode and the second electrode to facilitate an electrochemical reaction at either or both the first and second electrode such that the respective resistance of the associated electrode varies.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein the first electrode comprises Ag.

3. The method of claim 1 wherein the first electrode comprises Ag/AgCl.

4. The method of claim 1 wherein the second electrode comprises Ag.

5. The method of claim 1 wherein the second electrode comprises Ag/AgCl.

6. The method of claim 1 wherein the first ionic solution and the second ionic solution are identical.

7. The method of claim 1 wherein the first ionic solution includes a medicament.

8. The method of claim 1 wherein the first ionic solution includes a non-drug electrolyte.

9. The method of claim 1 , further comprising affixing the first and second matrix to a user's skin.

10. The method of claim 9 , wherein the resistance of the first electrode increases until a current through the first electrode is effectively zero.

11. The method of claim 9 , wherein the resistance of the second electrode increases until a current through the second electrode is effectively zero.

12. The method of claim 9 , further comprising transferring a finite amount of charge between the first electrode and second electrode due to the voltage potential.

13. The method of claim 12 , wherein the voltage potential is substantially constant.

14. The method of claim 13 , wherein the finite amount of charge is transferred as a result of an increase in resistance of the first or second electrode over a period of time.

15. The method of claim 14 , wherein a drug dose is delivered to the user that is proportional to the finite amount of charge.

16. The method of claim 1 , wherein the impurities facilitate electroplating on the second electrode.

17. The method of claim 1 , wherein the resistance of the second electrode changes with the amount of impurities.

18. The method of claim 1 , wherein the impurities added to the surface of the second electrode vary the resistance of the second electrode over time in accordance with a predetermined resistance profile.
