Abstract

A telecommunications cabinet includes a cabinet housing; a fiber optic splitter; a plurality of spools disposed on a cable management surface; a panel oriented at a fixed angle relative to the access opening so that the panel extends laterally and rearwardly between the access opening and the cable management surface; and a plurality of adapters disposed on the panel.

Claims (40)

1. A telecommunications device comprising:

a housing;

a plurality of optical fibers within the housing, the optical fibers having ends connectorized with fiber optic connectors including dust caps;

a plurality of fiber optic adapters within the housing for receiving the fiber optic connectors without the dust caps on; and

a plurality of storage ports for receiving the fiber optic connectors with the dust caps on.

2. The telecommunications device of claim 1 , further including multiple rows of ports configured to receive fiber optic connectors with dust caps thereon.

3. The telecommunications device of claim 1 , wherein the housing further includes a splitter.

4. The telecommunications device of claim 1 , wherein the adapters are mounted on an adapter module.

5. The telecommunications device of claim 1 , wherein the adapters are mounted within an interior of the housing.

6. The telecommunications device of claim 5 , wherein a splitter is mounted within the interior of the housing, the splitter combining optical signals from patch cords inserted within the adapters into a single optical fiber.

7. The telecommunications device of claim 1 , wherein the housing includes a front opening for accessing an interior of the housing.

8. The telecommunications device of claim 7 , further comprising a front door hinged to one side of the housing, wherein the front door opens and closes the front opening to seal the interior of the housing when closed.

9. The telecommunications device of claim 1 , wherein the dust caps are on ferrules of the fiber optic connectors.

10. The telecommunications device of claim 9 , wherein the ferrules each have a side surface and an end surface, the ferrules each holding an optical fiber having a polished end face positioned at the end surface of the ferrules.

11. The telecommunications device of claim 1 , wherein the dust cap has a one-piece construction.

12. The telecommunications device of claim 1 , wherein the storage ports are arranged as rows of ports configured to receive the fiber optic connectors with the dust caps on.

13. The telecommunications device of claim 12 , wherein when the fiber optic connectors are held by the rows of ports, the longitudinal axis of the ferrules of the fiber optic connectors extend generally in a front to rear orientation relative to the housing.

14. A housing comprising:

at least one optical fiber with a connectorized end having a fiber optic connector with a dust cap;

at least one fiber optic adapter for receiving the fiber optic connector with the dust cap off; and

at least one storage port for receiving the fiber optic connector with the dust cap on.

15. The housing according to claim 14 , further comprising a splitter.

16. The housing according to claim 14 , wherein the storage port is arranged as a row of ports configured to receive the fiber optic connector with the dust cap on.

17. A method for managing a fiber optic cord of a telecommunications device, the fiber optic cord having an end that terminates at a first fiber optic connector, the first fiber optic connector including a connector body having a first end and a second end, the first fiber optic connector also including a ferrule positioned at the first end of the connector body, the ferrule having a side surface and an end surface, the telecommunications device including a housing including at least one fiber optic adapter, at least one optical fiber, and a splitter, the ferrule holding a first optical fiber having a polished end face, the adapter coupling the first fiber optic connector with a second fiber optic connector, and a connector storage region for receiving the first fiber optic connector before the first fiber optic connector has been coupled to the second fiber optic connector, the method comprising:

mounting a dust cap over the ferrule of the first fiber optic connector, the dust cap having an open end positioned opposite from a closed end, the dust cap including an inner surface defining a central opening that extends from the open end to the closed end of the dust cap, the dust cap being mounted over the ferrule of the first fiber optic connector with the inner surface of the dust cap engaging the side surface of the ferrule and the closed end of the dust cap opposing the end surface of the ferrule; and

inserting the first end of the connector body of the first fiber optic connector into the connector storage region including a row of ports, the first fiber optic connector being inserted into the row of ports with the dust cap in place over the ferrule of the first fiber optic connector, wherein the row of ports are adapted to temporarily hold the first fiber optic connector at the connector storage region of the telecommunications device until it is desired to couple the first fiber optic connector to the second fiber optic connector, the dust cap being mounted over the ferrule while the first fiber optic connector is held by the row of ports.

18. The method of claim 17 , wherein the ferrule of the first fiber optic connector defines a longitudinal axis, and wherein the longitudinal axis is not generally vertically oriented when the first fiber optic connector is held by the row of ports.

19. The method of claim 18 , wherein the longitudinal axis of the ferrule of the first fiber optic connector is generally horizontally oriented when the first fiber optic connector is held by the row of ports.

20. The method of claim 17 , further comprising removing the first fiber optic connector from the row of ports after the first fiber optic connector has been stored at the connector storage region for a period of time; removing the dust cap from the ferrule of the first fiber optic connector after the first fiber optic connector has been removed from the row of ports; and inserting the first fiber optic connector into the adapter after the dust cap has been removed from the ferrule of the first fiber optic connector.

21. A telecommunications device comprising:

a housing including a termination region and a storage region spaced from the termination region;

a plurality of optical fibers within the housing, the optical fibers having ends connectorized with fiber optic connectors including dust caps;

a plurality of fiber optic adapters disposed within the housing at the termination region for receiving the fiber optic connectors without the dust caps on; and

rows of storage locations at the storage region for receiving the fiber optic connectors with the dust caps on.

22. The telecommunications device of claim 21 , wherein the housing further includes a splitter.

23. A telecommunications device comprising:

a housing;

a plurality of optical fibers within the housing, the optical fibers having ends connectorized with fiber optic connectors including dust caps;

a plurality of fiber optic adapters within the housing for receiving the fiber optic connectors without the dust caps on; and

a plurality of storage ports for receiving at least ferrules of the fiber optic connectors, the storage ports not being fiber optic adapters.
