Abstract

A media content receiver receives a message including an address. The receiver processes the address to determine whether the address is associated with the media content receiver. Additionally, if a removable circuit device is installed in the receiver, the receiver processes the address to determine whether the address is associated with the installed removable circuit device. If the address is associated with the media content receiver, the receiver processes the message. If the address is associated with the removable circuit device, the receiver transfers the message to the removable circuit device, which then processes the message.

Claims (25)

1. A media content source to communicate with a plurality of media content receivers each configured to receive a removable circuit device, comprising:

a transmitter configured to transmit media content and messages to media content receivers via a television broadcast link; and

control circuitry configured to generate and transmit separate messages for each of the media content receivers and for each of the removable circuit devices installed in the media content receivers, wherein each of the media content receivers and each of the installed removable circuit devices is associated with a separate address so that some of the messages are addressed to the media content receivers themselves while other messages are addressed to the removable circuit devices installed in the media content receivers,

wherein each of the plurality of media content receivers is configured to process the message to determine whether the address is associated with the media content receiver or one of the removable circuit devices that is installed in the media content receiver,

wherein the each of the messages comprises a flag that indicates if the address is associated with one of the media content receivers or one of the removable circuit devices, and wherein each media content receiver determines whether the address is associated with the media content receiver or the removable circuit device based in part upon the flag.

2. The media content source of claim 1 , further comprising:

data storage configured to store the address of each of the media content receivers and the installed removable circuit devices;

wherein the control circuitry is configured, for each of the generated and transmitted messages, to include the address of the media content receiver or the installed removable circuit device as part of the message.

3. The media content source of claim 2 , wherein:

the data storage is configured to store encryption keys, wherein each of the encryption keys is associated with one of the addresses stored in the data storage; and

the control circuitry is configured to encrypt each of the generated and transmitted messages with the encryption key associated with the media content receiver or the installed removable circuit device that is to receive the message.

4. The media content source of claim 1 , wherein:

the transmitter is configured to transmit the messages to the media content receivers and the installed removable circuit devices by way of at least one of a television broadcast satellite, a radio broadcast satellite, a cable television head-end, and a television broadcast terrestrial antenna.

5. The media content source of claim 1 wherein each of the media content receivers is further configured to process the message if the address is associated with the media content receiver, and to transfer the message to the removable circuit device installed in the media content receiver if the address is associated with the removable circuit device.

6. The media content source of claim 1 wherein addresses associated with media content receivers have a first format and addresses associated with removable circuit devices have a second format that is different from the first format, and wherein each media content receiver determines whether the address is associated with the media content receiver or the removable circuit device based in part upon the format of the address.

7. The media content source of claim 1 wherein addresses associated with media content receivers have a first format and addresses associated with removable circuit devices have a second format that is different from the first format.

8. The media content source of claim 1 wherein the television broadcast link is a direct broadcast satellite (DBS) link.

9. A method executable by a broadcast media content source to provide broadcast television programming to a plurality of media content receivers, wherein each of the media content receivers is configured to be installed with a removable circuit device that provides access control for at least some of the broadcast television programming, the method comprising:

generating separate messages for each of the media content receivers and for each of the removable circuit devices installed in the media content receivers, wherein each of the media content receivers and each of the installed removable circuit devices are associated with a separate address so that some of the messages are addressed to the media content receivers themselves while other messages are addressed to the removable circuit devices installed in the media content receivers; and

transmitting the messages to the plurality of media content receivers via a television broadcast link along with a broadcast that provides the television broadcast programming,

wherein each of the plurality of media content receivers is configured to process the message to determine whether the address is associated with the media content receiver or one of the removable circuit devices that is installed in the media content receiver,

wherein the each of the messages comprises a flag that indicates if the address is associated with one of the media content receivers or one of the removable circuit devices, and wherein each media content receiver determines whether the address is associated with the media content receiver or the removable circuit device based in part upon the flag.

10. The method of claim 9 wherein each of the media content receivers is further configured to process the message if the address is associated with the media content receiver, and to transfer the message to the removable circuit device installed in the media content receiver if the address is associated with the removable circuit device.

11. The method of claim 9 wherein addresses associated with media content receivers have a first format and addresses associated with removable circuit devices have a second format that is different from the first format, and wherein each media content receiver determines whether the address is associated with the media content receiver or the removable circuit device based in part upon the format of the address.

12. The method of claim 9 wherein the television broadcast link is a direct broadcast satellite (DBS) link.
