Abstract

Surgical interfaces and adaptors for properly positioning a portion of a medical instrument within an endoscope at a site of interest is disclosed.

Claims (31)

1 . An attachment device including a surgical interface for connecting a medical instrument to an endoscope, the surgical interface comprising:

an interface housing and an inner attachment portion disposed within the interface housing;

a luer;

wherein the inner attachment portion defines an opening at a proximal end of the inner attachment portion for receiving a portion of the male luer; and

wherein the interface housing is configured to operably connect a proximal portion of the endoscope to a distal end of the medical instrument.

2 . The device of claim 1 , wherein the inner attachment portion has an inner body and an inner extension extending from the inner body at a distal end of the inner attachment portion wherein the inner body has a larger diameter than the inner extension.

3 . The device of claim 2 , wherein the inner extension extends outwardly frm the interface housing and is configured to extend into the proximal portion of the endoscope to maintain the connection between the endoscope and the interface housing.

4 . The device of claim 1 , wherein the luer has a proximal male extension at a proximal end of the male luer and a distal male extension at a distal end of the male luer.

5 . The device of claim 1 , wherein a proximal end of the interface housing defines an opening and an interface retainer at the opening for receiving the proximal portion of the endoscope.

6 . The interface of claim 5 , further comprising a seal disposed around a portion of the inner attachment portion and abutting the proximal portion of the endoscope.

7 . The device of claim 5 , wherein the interface retainer is configured to receive a flared portion of the endoscope.

8 . The device of claim 1 , further comprising an attachment mechanism configured to connect to the luer, opposite to the interface housing.

9 . The device of claim 8 , wherein the attachment mechanism is configured to receive a proximal portion of the luer.

10 . The device of claim 1 , further comprising an outer support ring disposed at a proximal end of the interface housing, wherein the outer support ring operatively engages the inner attachment portion.

11 . The device of claim 10 , wherein the inner attachment portion includes a protrusion at the proximal end thereof and wherein the outer support ring defines an inner cavity for receiving the protrusion.

12 . The device of claim 10 , wherein the luer include a body portion and further wherein a proximal end of the outer support ring and the proximal end of the inner attachment portion are positioned adjacent the luer body portion.

The device of claim 1 , further comprising an attachment mechanism that includes a shaft extending therethrough which extends beyond the attachment mechanism at the distal end thereof, wherein a portion of the luer defines a luer recess for receiving a portion of the extended shaft such that the attachment mechanism is connected to the luer.

14 . The device of claim 1 , wherein the attachment portion is defined by a proximal end member and a distal cap member, wherein the distal cap member may be selectively engaged with a proximal portion of the luer.

15 . The device of claim 14 , wherein the cap member further includes a shaft member extending therethrough, the shaft member defining a passageway through which the portion of the medical device may extend.

16 . A surgical interface for use in connecting a medical device to an endoscope, the surgical interface comprising:

an inner attachment portion having a proximal end and distal end and having a passageway extending therethrough and configured to receive a portion of an endoscope;

at least two interface connecting members that are pivotally connected and configured to extend around the inner attachment portion at a hinge; and

wherein the interface connecting members define an interface housing when connected around the inner attachment portion, the interface housing defining an opening at a distal end of the interface housing for receiving a proximal end of the endoscope to selectively secure the interface to the endoscope.

17 . The interface of claim 16 , wherein the distal end of the interface housing includes an interface retainer defined around the opening for selectively receiving the flared portion of the endoscope.

18 . The interface of claim 16 , further comprising a seal disposed around the inner attachment portion at the distal end thereof, wherein the seal forms a sealed connection between the interface housing and the proximal end of the endoscope.

19 . A surgical interface for connecting a medical instrument to an endoscope, the surgical interface comprising:

a hollow interface housing defined by a proximal end and a distal end;

a surround portion disposed within the interface housing having a base portion and a plurality of extensions extending from the base portion to the distal end of the hollow interface; and

wherein the plurality of extensions extend from the base portion to the distal end of the interface housing and define a void for receiving a proximal end of the endoscope.

20 . The interface of claim 19 , wherein the surround portion is hollow thereby creating a void between the extensions and wherein each of the extensions form, at a distal end, an extension lip for receiving the proximal end of the endoscope.

21 . The interface of claim 20 , wherein the extension lip engages the proximal end of the endoscope as the surround portion is inserted into the interface housing, the distal end of each extension extends radially inwardly as the surround portion is inserted into the interface housing.
