Abstract

An automated banking machine is part of a banking system that can operate to cause financial transfers responsive to data read from data bearing records. The machine can also receive user card data from a cell phone, including an electronic account number. The phone's banking application encrypts the account number along with an inputted random number which was generated by the machine. The phone then displays a bar code image containing the encrypted data. The machine includes a bar code reader. The random number is used to verify the current transaction session. Thereafter, normal transaction flow can follow, including PIN input. The process allows for secure input of card data without physical insertion of a card. Thus, fraudulent activities based on card insertion can be reduced.

Claims (64)

1. A method comprising:

(a) operating at least one processor associated with an automated banking machine to receive from a customer through customer input to the machine, a request to carry out a transaction on a customer account through operation of the machine,

wherein the machine includes a cash dispenser, at least one data reader, and at least one display device,

wherein the at least one data reader is operable to read financial account data,

wherein the transaction involves operation of the cash dispenser,

wherein the transaction does not require operation of the at least one data reader,

wherein the transaction does not require customer input to the machine of financial account data that includes an account number of the customer account,

wherein the at least one processor is operable to communicate with a remotely located at least one server,

wherein the at least one processor is operable to communicate with a transaction host,

wherein the transaction host does not include the at least one server;

(b) operating the at least one processor to send to the at least one server, a message indicative of the request received in (a);

(c) operating the at least one processor to receive an identifier from the at least one server;

(d) operating the at least one processor to cause the machine to output at least one code through the at least one display device, wherein the at least one code corresponds to the identifier received in (c);

(e) operating the at least one processor to receive an account number from the at least one server; and

(f) operating the at least one processor to send a transaction approval request to the transaction host,

wherein the transaction approval request includes the account number received in (e).

2. The method according to claim 1 wherein the automated banking machine is part of a banking system,

wherein the at least one reader includes both

a card reader, and

a biometric reader,

wherein the at least one processor is operative during a user session to:

cause card data to be read through operation of the card reader, and

cause biometric data to be read through operation of the biometric reader;

wherein (a)-(f) occur during a first user session with the machine,

and subsequent to (m) and during a different user session with the machine, further comprising:

(g) operating the at least one processor to cause the card reader to read from a card, financial account data that includes an account number;

(h) operating the at least one processor to cause the biometric reader to read biometric data; and

(i) operating the at least one processor to authorize a different customer to request a financial transaction that involves the cash dispenser, responsive at least in part to each of:

computer-determined correspondence between the account number read in (g) and stored customer account information, and

computer-determined correspondence between the biometric data read in (h) and stored biometric information, and

computer-determined correspondence between the account number read in (g) and the biometric data read in (h).

3. The method according to claim 1 wherein the at least one code comprises a bar code, and wherein (d) includes operating the at least one processor to cause the at least one display device to output the bar code.

4. The method according to claim 3 wherein (g) includes operating the at least one server to receive the mobile communication device, data corresponding to a captured image of the bar code outputted in (f).

5. A method comprising:

(a) operating at least one processor associated with an automated banking machine to receive from a customer through customer input to the machine, a request to carry out a transaction in which a customer account number is not required to be input to the machine by the customer,

(b) operating the at least one processor to send a message indicative of the request received in (a), to at least one remote computer;

(c) subsequent to (b), operating the at least one processor to receive from the at least one remote computer, an identifier;

(d) operating the at least one processor to cause the machine to provide to the customer, data corresponding to the identifier received in (c),

wherein the data corresponding to the identifier allows the customer to send to the at least one remote computer, the data usable to identify the machine;

(e) subsequent to (d), operating the at least one processor to receive a customer account number from the at least one remote computer; and

(f) operating the at least one processor to send a transaction approval request to a transaction host,

wherein the transaction approval request includes the customer account number received in (e),

wherein the transaction host differs from the at least one remote computer.

6. The method according to claim 5 wherein in (a) the machine includes a cash dispenser and at least one data reader that is operable to read financial account data,

wherein the transaction involves operation of the cash dispenser,

wherein the transaction does not require operation of the at least one data reader.

7. The method according to claim 6 wherein the automated banking machine is part of a banking system,

wherein the at least one reader includes both a card reader and a biometric reader,

wherein the at least one processor is operative during a user session to:

cause card data to be read through operation of the card reader, and

cause biometric data to be read through operation of the biometric reader;

wherein (a)-(f) occur during a first user session with the machine,

and being subsequent to (f) and during a different user session with the machine, further comprising:

(g) operating the at least one processor to cause the card reader to read from a card, financial account data that includes an account number;

8. The method according to claim 5 wherein the machine includes at least one display device, and wherein (d) includes operating the at least one processor to cause the at least one display device to output the data corresponding to the identifier.

9. The method according to claim 8 and wherein (d) includes operating the at least one processor to cause the at least one display device to output a bar code,

wherein the code includes the data corresponding to the identifier.

10. The method according to claim 5 wherein the identifier comprises a computer-generated random code, wherein (c) includes operating the at least one processor to receive the random code.

11. The method according to claim 10 wherein the random code comprises a random number, wherein (c) includes operating the at least one processor to receive the random number.
