Abstract

A surgical staple for connecting two tubular tissue structures may include a substantially rectangular base having a first edge and a second edge substantially parallel to one another, and a third edge substantially perpendicular to the first and said second edges; and may also include at least three deformable tines extending from the first and second edges of said base; where no tine that extends from the first edge may be positioned at substantially the same distance from the third edge as any said tine that extends from the second edge; and where deformation of the tines secures the tubular tissue structures together.

Claims (14)

1. A surgical staple, comprising:

a substantially planar rectangular base having a first edge and a second edge substantially parallel to one another, and a third edge substantially perpendicular to said first and second edges; and

a plurality of tines projecting from each of said first and second edges of said base, wherein said tines projecting from said first edge, including a first tine and a second tine adjacent to each other, are offset from said tines projecting from said second edge, including a third tine and a fourth tine adjacent to each other, wherein said tines have a first configuration and a second configuration, wherein said tines are deformed in the second configuration, and wherein in the second configuration the first tine and the third tine are closer together than a gap between a first group including the first tine and the third tine, and a second group including the second tine and the fourth tine, and wherein the second tine and the fourth tine are closer together than the gap between the first group and the second group wherein the first tine extending from the first edge has a first length and the second tine extending from the first edge has a second length, wherein the third tine extending from the second edge has the second length and the fourth tine extending from the second edge has the first length, wherein the first length is shorter than the second length, and wherein the first tine is substantially parallel to the third tine and the second tine is substantially parallel to the fourth tine.

2. The surgical staple of claim 1 , wherein said tines projecting from said first edge and said tines projecting from said second edge are deformable toward one another without coming into contact with one another.

3. The surgical staple of claim 1 , wherein said tines projecting from said first edge and said tines projecting from said second edge are deformable toward one another such that at least one tine projecting from said first edge contacts at least one tine projecting from said second edge.

4. The surgical staple of claim 1 , wherein at least one said tine is tapered.

5. The surgical staple of claim 1 , wherein said tines are plastically deformable.

6. The surgical staple of claim 1 , wherein at least one notch is defined in at least one said tine, whereby a preferred bending direction is established.

7. An anastomosis staple , comprising:

a substantially planar rectangular base, and

a plurality of deformable tines extending from each of two opposing edges of said base, wherein said tines projecting from a first edge of said base and said tines projecting from a second edge of said base deform toward one another in use, wherein said tines have a first configuration and a second configuration, wherein said tines are deformed in the second configuration, and wherein in the second configuration a first tine extending from the first edge is less distant from a third tine extending from the second edge than a space between a first group and a second group, the first group including the first tine and the third tine, the second group including a second tine extending from the first edge and a fourth tine extending from the second edge, and wherein in the second configuration the second tine is less distant from the fourth tine than the space between the first group and the second group, the first tine adjacent to the second tine on the first edge, the third tine adjacent to the fourth tine on the second edge, the first tine and the second tine offset with respect to the third tine and the fourth tine, wherein the first tine extending from the first edge has a first length and the second tine extending from the first edge has a second length, wherein the third tine extending from the second edge has the second length and the fourth tine extending from the second edge has the first length, wherein the first length is shorter than the second length, and wherein the first tine is substantially parallel to the third tine and the second tine is substantially parallel to the fourth tine.

8. The anastomosis staple of claim 7 , wherein at least one said tine is tapered.

9. The anastomosis staple of claim 7 , wherein said tines are plastically deformable.

10. The anastomosis staple of claim 7 , wherein the first and fourth tines extend substantially from opposite corners of the base.
