Abstract

A method, apparatus computer program product provide acoustical echo control for distributed voice conferencing including distributed voice conferencing that utilizes spatial audio processing. In the context of a method, a reference signal and one or more other reference signals may be received by a mobile terminal. The reference signal is associated with downlink audio to be reproduced by the mobile terminal and the one or more other reference signals are associated with downlink audio to be reproduced by one or more other mobile terminals. The method also includes processing an echo signal from uplink audio due to the downlink audio reproduced by the audio transducer of the mobile terminal based upon the reference signal. The method also processes an echo signal from uplink audio due to the downlink audio reproduced by respective audio transducers of the one or more other mobile terminals based upon the one or more other reference signals.

Claims (36)

1. A method for a voice communication system, the method comprising:

receiving, at a mobile terminal, a reference signal associated with downlink audio to be reproduced by an audio transducer of the mobile terminal and one or more other reference signals associated with downlink audio to be reproduced by respective audio transducers of one or more other mobile terminals;

processing, with a processor, an echo signal from uplink audio due to the downlink audio reproduced by the audio transducer of the mobile terminal based upon the reference signal; and

processing an echo signal from uplink audio due to the downlink audio reproduced by the respective audio transducers of the one or more other mobile terminals based upon the one or more other reference signals so as to at least partially attenuate echo signals from the uplink audio due to the downlink audio reproduced by the respective audio transducers of the one or more other mobile terminals.

2. A method according to claim 1 wherein the one or more other reference signals comprise a single other reference signal associated with the downlink audio to be reproduced by the audio transducers of each of the one or more other mobile terminals.

3. A method according to claim 1 wherein the one or more other reference signals comprise at least one first reference signal associated with the downlink audio to be reproduced by the audio transducer of a respective one of the one or more other mobile terminals.

4. A method according to claim 3 wherein the one or more other reference signals further comprise a second reference signal associated with the downlink audio to be reproduced by the audio transducers of a plurality of the other mobile terminals.

5. A method according to claim 1 wherein the one or more other reference signals comprise a plurality of other reference signals with each other reference signal associated with the downlink audio to be reproduced by the audio transducer of a respective one of the one or more other mobile terminals.

6. An apparatus for a voice communication system, the apparatus comprising:

at least one processor and at least one memory including computer program code, the at least one memory and the computer program code configured to, with the processor, cause the apparatus to at least:

receive, at a mobile terminal, a reference signal associated with downlink audio to be reproduced by an audio transducer of the mobile terminal and one or more other reference signals associated with downlink audio to be reproduced by respective audio transducers of one or more other mobile terminals;

process an echo signal from uplink audio due to the downlink audio reproduced by the audio transducer of the mobile terminal based upon the reference signal; and

process an echo signal from uplink audio due to the downlink audio reproduced by the respective audio transducers of the one or more other mobile terminals based upon the one or more other reference signals so as to at least partially attenuate echo signals from the uplink audio due to the downlink audio reproduced by the respective audio transducers of the one or more other mobile terminals.

7. An apparatus according to claim 6 wherein the one or more other reference signals comprise a single other reference signal associated with the downlink audio to be reproduced by the audio transducers of each of the one or more other mobile terminals.

8. An apparatus according to claim 6 wherein the one or more other reference signals comprise at least one first reference signal associated with the downlink audio to be reproduced by the audio transducer of a respective one of the one or more other mobile terminals.

9. An apparatus according to claim 8 wherein the one or more other reference signals further comprise a second reference signal associated with the downlink audio to be reproduced by the audio transducers of a plurality of the other mobile terminals.

10. An apparatus according to claim 6 wherein the one or more other reference signals comprise a plurality of other reference signals with each other reference signal associated with the downlink audio to be reproduced by the audio transducer of a respective one of the one or more other mobile terminals.

11. A method for a voice communication system, the method comprising:

generating, with a processor, downlink audio signals to be provided to a plurality of mobile terminals in conjunction with distributed voice conferencing; and

causing a reference signal and one or more other reference signals to be provided to a respective mobile terminal with the reference signal associated with the downlink audio signals provided to the respective mobile terminal and the one or more other reference signals associated with the downlink audio signals provided to one or more other mobile terminals to permit acoustic echo control of uplink audio due to downlink audio reproduced by respective audio transducers of the one or more other mobile terminals.

12. A method according to claim 11 further comprising decorrelating the downlink audio signal to be provided to the respective mobile terminal from the downlink audio signals to be provided to the one or more other mobile terminals.

13. A method according to claim 11 wherein the one or more other reference signals comprise at least one first reference signal associated with the downlink audio signals provided to a respective one of the one or more other mobile terminals.

14. A method according to claim 13 wherein the one or more other reference signals further comprise a second reference signal associated with the downlink audio signals provided to a plurality of the one or more other mobile terminals.

15. A method according to claim 11 wherein the one or more other reference signals comprise a plurality of other reference signals with each other reference signal associated with the downlink audio signals provided to a respective one of the one or more other mobile terminals.

16. A method according to claim 11 further comprising determining a plurality of mobile terminals including the respective mobile terminal and the one or more other mobile terminals that share a same acoustic space.

17. A method according to claim 11 wherein generating downlink audio signals comprises generating at least two different downlink audio signals to be provided to respective ones of the plurality of mobile terminals.

18. An apparatus for a voice communication system, the apparatus comprising:

at least one processor and at least one memory including computer program code, the at least one memory and the computer program code configured to, with the processor, cause the apparatus to at least:

generate downlink audio signals to be provided to a plurality of mobile terminals in conjunction with distributed voice conferencing; and

cause a reference signal and one or more other reference signals to be provided to a respective mobile terminal with the reference signal associated with the downlink audio signals provided to the respective mobile terminal and the one or more other reference signals associated with the downlink audio signals provided to one or more other mobile terminals to permit acoustic echo control of uplink audio due to downlink audio reproduced by respective audio transducers of the one or more other mobile terminals.

19. An apparatus according to claim 18 further comprising decorrelating the downlink audio signal to be provided to the respective mobile terminal from the downlink audio signals to be provided to the one or more other mobile terminals.

20. An apparatus according to claim 18 wherein the one or more other reference signals comprise at least one first reference signal associated with the downlink audio signals provided to a respective one of the one or more other mobile terminals.
