Abstract

A method and device for acquiring an image such as a splash screen for an application. A screenshot instruction is sent to a target device upon detecting a trigger event; image data is received from the target device in response to the screenshot instruction; and upon receiving the image data, the image data is automatically stored and associated with the application.

Claims (36)

1 . A method of acquiring an image for an application, comprising:

sending a screenshot instruction to a target device upon detecting a trigger event;

receiving image data from the target device in response to the screenshot instruction; and

upon receiving the image data, automatically storing the image data and associating the image data with the application.

2 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the screenshot instruction includes information specifying one or more of an image orientation, an application page, an image resolution, or an image dimension.

3 . The method of claim 2 , wherein the screenshot instruction includes instructions for a plurality of screenshots, and receiving image data includes receiving data for a plurality of screenshots.

4 . The method of claim 1 , including labelling the image data for use as a splash screen or an icon for the application, and the screenshot generated at the target device is rendered by a version of the application operating on the target device.

5 . The method of claim 1 , comprising automatically sending a plurality of screenshot instructions to the target device upon detecting the trigger event, at least some of the screenshot instructions specifying different image orientations, and receiving image data comprises receiving image data for a plurality of respective images having the specified image orientations.

6 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the method is performed at an application development server, the screenshot instruction is sent to the target device through a communications network that includes a wireless link to the target device, and the trigger event includes receiving a signal from a remote workstation terminal indicating that a screenshot image is requested.

7 . The method of claim 6 , comprising, prior to sending the screenshot instruction, providing a version of the application to the target device, and authenticating the target device, wherein the image data received from the target device includes a screenshot of a page generated on the target device by the version of the application provided to the target device.

8 . The method of claim 1 , comprising establishing a first communication link between a workstation accessing a web based application development tool on an application development server and a second communication link between the workstation and the target device, wherein the screenshot instruction is sent to the target device via the second communication link and the image data is received by the workstation from the target device via the second communications link and then received by the application development server through the workstation via the first communications link and the image data is stored by the application development server.

9 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the application has associated configuration data, and associating the image data with the application includes updating the configuration data to reference a filename for a file storing the image data.

10 . A system for developing applications for use on a mobile electronic device, comprising:

a communication interface;

a storage;

a processor configured for:

sending a screenshot instruction to a target mobile electronic device through the communication interface upon detecting a trigger event;

receiving image data through the communication interface from the target device in response to the screenshot instruction; and

upon receiving the image data, automatically storing the image data in the storage and associating the image data with the application.

11 . The system of claim 10 , wherein the screenshot instruction includes information specifying one or more of an image orientation, an application page, an image resolution, or an image dimension.

12 . The system of claim 11 , wherein the screenshot instruction includes instructions for a plurality of screenshots, and receiving image data includes receiving data for a plurality of screenshots.

13 . The system of claim 10 , wherein the processor is configured for labelling the image data as a splash screen or an icon for the application, and the screenshot generated at the target device is rendered by a version of the application operating on the target device.

14 . The system of claim 10 , wherein the processor is configured for automatically sending a plurality of screenshot instructions to the target device upon detecting the trigger event, at least some of the screenshot instructions specifying different image orientations, and receiving image data comprises receiving image data for a plurality of respective images having the specified image orientations.

15 . The system of claim 10 , wherein the processor is located at an application development server and the screenshot instruction is sent to the target device through a communications network that includes a wireless link to the target device, and the trigger event includes receiving a signal from a remote workstation terminal indicating that a screenshot image is requested from the application.

16 . The system of claim 15 , wherein the processor comprising, prior to sending the screenshot instruction, providing a version of the application to the target device, and authenticating the target device, wherein the image data received from the target device includes a screenshot of a page generated on the target device by the version of the application provided to the target device.

17 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the application has associated configuration data, and associating the image data with the application includes updating the configuration data to reference a filename for a file storing the image data.

18 . A mobile electronic device, comprising:

a communications interface;

a display screen;

a storage having a version of an application stored thereon;

a processor configured for:

receiving through the communications interface a screenshot instruction indicating a desired orientation;

generating image data representing a screenshot of an image displayed on the display screen in the desired orientation; and

sending the image data through the communications interface.

19 . The device of claim 18 , wherein generating the image data comprises capturing screenshot of content generated on the display screen in the desired orientation.

20 . The device of claim 18 , wherein the screenshot instruction indicates a desired page of the application for viewing and generating the image data comprises capturing screenshot of content generated on the display screen of the desired page in the desired orientation.
