Treating cancer using electromagnetic fields in combination with photodynamic therapy
View Patent ↗A light generating circuit is implanted in a subject's body and aimed at a target region such as a tumor. A photosensitizer is introduced into the target region, and an AC electric field is induced in the region. The field causes the light generating circuit to generate light, which activates the photosensitizer; and at certain field strengths and frequencies, the field itself has a beneficial effect. The beneficial effects of the field and the activated photosensitizer are thereby obtained simultaneously.
1. A method of treating cancer in a target region within a subject's body, the method comprising the steps of:
introducing a photosensitizer into cancer tissue in the target region;
implanting, into the subject's body, a light source aimed at the target region, the light source having a first contact and a second contact, wherein the light source generates light that activates the photosensitizer, and wherein the light source is powered by the application of an AC electric field; and
capacitively coupling, into the target region, an AC electric field that has frequency and field strength characteristics such that (i) passage of the electric field through dividing cells in the target region damages a significant portion of the dividing cells and (ii) passage of the electric field through non-dividing cells leaves the non-dividing cells substantially unharmed,
wherein the same AC electric field that is capacitively coupled into the target region also powers the light source by inducing a potential difference between the first contact and the second contact.
2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the light source comprises a light-emitting diode.
3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the AC electric field has a frequency between 100 kHz and 300 kHz.
4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the photosensitizer damages cancer cells when it is activated by illumination.
5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the light source comprises a light-emitting diode, the AC electric field has a frequency between 100 kHz and 300 kHz, and the photosensitizer damages cancer cells when it is activated by illumination.
6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the target region comprises a tumor.
