Abstract

An embodiment of the present invention provides a method for limiting tuning of a matching network having variable reactive elements coupled to a variable load impedance to at least reduce an undesirable effect caused by an RF signal. Other embodiments are disclosed.

1. A communication device, comprising:

a memory;

a matching network including one or more variable reactance elements; and

a controller coupled with the matching network and the memory,

wherein the controller adjusts the one or more variable reactance elements to perform first tuning responsive to a first variable load impedance,

wherein the first tuning is iterative and is initiated using a first initial tuning configuration for the one or more variable reactance elements that is selected from a look-up table based on a first physical use state of the communication device and an operating frequency without being selected according to any other parameter identified in the look-up table,

wherein the first tuning subsequently utilizes first measured operational parameters for first subsequent tuning values for the one or more variable reactance elements, and

wherein the first tuning is limited to avoid certain matching impedance values to ensure that a specific absorption rate limit is not exceeded.

2. The communication device of claim 1 , wherein the controller adjusts the one or more variable reactance elements to perform second tuning responsive to a second variable load impedance, wherein the second tuning is subsequent to the first tuning, wherein the second tuning is iterative and is initiated using a second initial tuning configuration for the one or more variable reactance elements based on the first physical use state of the communication device and the operating frequency, wherein the second tuning subsequently utilizes second measured operational parameters for second subsequent tuning values for the one or more variable reactance elements, wherein the first tuning and the second tuning are performed between transmit bursts of the communication device, and wherein the look-up table is provisioned to the communication device during manufacturing of the communication device.

3. The communication device of claim 1 , wherein the matching impedance values are replaced with default values, wherein the matching network comprises a plurality of radio frequency ports, and wherein the first initial tuning configuration is based on a single operating frequency.

4. The communication device of claim 1 , further comprising a transmitter, wherein the matching impedance values are detected by the controller according to a specific absorption rate limit that is applied responsive to a determination that the first physical use state is indicative of the communication device being in a first device position with respect to a human body, and wherein the controller optimizes the matching impedance values based on the operating frequency of the transmitter absent a specific absorption rate limit.

5. The communication device of claim 1 , wherein a portion of the first tuning is performed during a transmit mode of the communication device, and wherein the first tuning is not based on a phase of an operating radio frequency voltage.

6. The communication device of claim 1 , further comprising a bias voltage driver circuit coupled to the controller and the matching network, wherein the one or more variable reactance elements comprise a variable dielectric capacitor, and wherein the bias voltage driver circuit maps control signals output from the controller to a voltage range compatible with the matching network.

7. The communication device of claim 1 , wherein the one or more variable reactance elements comprise at least one of a micro-electro-mechanical systems varactor or a semiconductor varactor.

8. The communication device of claim 1 , wherein the one or more variable reactance elements comprise a micro-electro-mechanical systems switched reactance component.

9. The communication device of claim 1 , wherein the one or more variable reactance elements comprise a semiconductor switched reactance component.

10. A method comprising:

determining, by a system including a processor, tuning steps for a matching network of a communication device to perform tuning responsive to a variable load impedance;

determining, by the system, a physical use state for operation of the communication device;

monitoring, by the system, for the operation of the communication device at a pre-determined power level;

identifying, by the system, a prohibited matching impedance range based on specific absorption rate limits, the pre-determined power level and the physical use state;

generating, by the system, limited tuning steps by adjusting the tuning steps to include a default limit utilizing an iterative process; and

adjusting, by the system, one or more variable reactance elements of the matching network based on the limited tuning steps for the tuning,

wherein the tuning is initiated using initial tuning values for the one or more variable reactance elements that are selected from a set of pre-defined initial tuning configuration based only on the physical use state of the communication device and an operation frequency, and

wherein the tuning avoids setting the one or more variable reactance elements within the prohibited matching impedance range.

11. The method of claim 10 , wherein the tuning is performed in between bursts when a transmitter of the communication device is inactive.

12. The method of claim 10 , wherein the set of pre-defined initial tuning configurations are stored in a look-up table of a memory of the communication device, wherein the look-up table is provisioned to the communication device during a manufacture of the communication device.

13. The method of claim 10 , wherein the tuning steps are limited by a predetermined number of tuning steps, a predetermined magnitude for each of the tuning steps, and a pre-determined time period for the tuning steps.

14. A communication device, comprising:

a matching network including one or more variable reactance elements; and

a controller coupled with the matching network,

wherein the controller adjusts the one or more variable reactance elements to perform first tuning responsive to a first variable load impedance,

wherein the first tuning is iterative and is initiated using first initial tuning values for the one or more variable reactance elements based on a selection from among a group of pre-defined initial configurations, wherein the selection performed by the controller is based only on a physical use state of the communication device and an operating frequency wherein the first tuning subsequently utilizes first measured operational parameters for first subsequent tuning values for the one or more variable reactance elements for the first tuning, and

wherein the first tuning is limited by prohibited matching impedance values for tuning steps to ensure that a specific absorption rate limit is not exceeded.

15. The communication device of claim 14 , wherein the first tuning is performed between transmit bursts of the communication device.

17. The communication device of claim 14 , further comprising a transmitter, wherein the prohibited matching impedance values correspond to specific absorption rate limits and total radiated power limits.

18. The communication device of claim 14 , wherein the first tuning is limited by at least one of a predetermined number of the tuning steps or a predetermined magnitude for each of the tuning steps.

19. The communication device of claim 14 , wherein the first tuning is limited by a pre-determined time period for the tuning steps.

20. The communication device of claim 14 , wherein the one or more variable reactance elements comprise a variable dielectric capacitor.
