Abstract

Embodiments described herein are directed to a lighting fixture including a lightguide that distributes light from a major surface, a light assembly including light sources arranged linearly, and a frame including a means for providing a force that urges the light assembly against an edge of the lightguide. A standoff or spacer can provide an air gap between a light source of the light assembly and the waveguide edge. In various embodiments, the lighting fixture may incorporate a spring, a spring finger, a spring clip, a screw, or other means for securing the light assembly against the edge of the lightguide. In this manner, substantially all light provided by the light assembly is emitted into the edge of the lightguide. The fixture is formed to accommodate tolerances among elements of the lighting fixture, while maintaining the light assembly securely against the edge of the lightguide.

Claims (58)

1. A lighting system comprising:

a first lightguide comprising two first major surfaces and a first edge formed between the two first major surfaces;

one or more first LEDs disposed along the first edge to couple light into the first lightguide through the first edge;

a second lightguide comprising two second major surfaces and a second edge formed between the two second major surfaces;

one or more second LEDs disposed along the second edge to couple light into the second lightguide through the second edge; and

a frame supporting the first lightguide and the second lightguide with the first lightguide and the second lightguide angled relative to one another to provide an apex, the frame configured for recessed installation in a ceiling.

2. The lighting system of claim 1 , further comprising at least one spring urging the one or more first LEDs and the first edge together,

wherein a standoff provides a gap between the one or more first LEDs and the first edge that are urged together by the at least one spring.

3. The lighting system of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the one or more first LEDs is urged into contact with the first edge by at least one spring.

4. The lighting system of claim 3 , wherein the at least one spring comprises coiled metal.

5. The lighting system of claim 3 , wherein the at least one spring comprises a spring finger or a spring clip.

6. The lighting system of claim 3 , wherein the at least one spring comprises a spring finger.

7. The lighting system of claim 1 , wherein the first lightguide further comprises a third edge that is formed between the two first major surfaces and that is opposite the first edge, and wherein at least one spring is disposed adjacent the third edge.

8. The lighting system of claim 1 , wherein at least one spring is disposed adjacent the first edge, and

wherein the first lightguide further comprises a third edge that is formed between the two first major surfaces and that is opposite the first edge.

9. A lighting system comprising:

a frame that comprises an apex and that is configured for recessed ceiling installation;

a first plate that is disposed in the frame and that comprises:

a first edge disposed adjacent the apex of the frame, with a first separation between the frame and the first edge;

a second edge opposite the first edge; and

optically transparent material extending between the first edge and the second edge;

a first light source disposed in the first separation, the first light source comprising:

a first member that extends along the first edge; and

a first plurality of light emitting diodes mounted to the first member;

a second plate that is disposed in the frame and the comprises:

a third edge disposed adjacent the apex of the frame, with a second separation between the frame and the third edge;

a fourth edge opposite the third edge; and

optically transparent material extending between the third edge and the fourth edge; and

a second light source disposed in the second separation, the second light source comprising:

a second member that extends along the third edge; and

a second plurality of light emitting diodes mounted to the second member.

10. The lighting system of claim 7 , further comprising a screw operable to bring the first light source and the first edge together by turning.

11. The lighting system of claim 9 , further comprising a spring disposed adjacent the second edge of the first plate,

wherein the first plate comprises a lightguide.

12. The lighting system of claim 9 , further comprising a third member that urges the first light source and the first edge together, to position the first plurality of light emitting diodes for coupling light into the first plate via the first edge,

wherein the third member comprises a spring finger.

13. The lighting system of claim 9 , further comprising a third member that urges the first light source and the first edge together, to position the first plurality of light emitting diodes for coupling light into the first plate via the first edge,

wherein the third member comprises a spring finger or a spring clip.

14. The lighting system of claim 9 , wherein at least a portion of the first separation comprises dimensional tolerance,

wherein a third member compensates for the dimensional tolerance by urging the first light source and the first edge together, and

wherein a standoff that is mounted on a circuit board maintains a predefined separation between the first light source and the first edge as urged together by the third member.

15. A lighting fixture, comprising:

a first lightguide comprising a first edge and a first major surface, the first lightguide operable to receive light through the first edge and distribute received light by emission through the first major surface;

a second lightguide comprising a second edge and a second major surface, the second lightguide operable to receive light through the second edge and distribute received light by emission through the second major surface;

a first assembly comprising a first plurality of light emitting diodes arranged substantially linearly;

a second assembly comprising a second plurality of light emitting diodes arranged substantially linearly; and

a frame that comprised an apex and that orients the first lightguide, and the second lightguide for providing overhead illumination, with space between the first edge and the frame creating dimensional tolerance,

wherein a member pressing against the frame and the first assembly forces the first plurality of light emitting diodes against the first edge and overcomes the dimensional tolerance.

16. The lighting fixture of claim 15 , wherein the member comprises a screw that includes threads for moving the first assembly towards the first edge via screw rotation.

17. The lighting fixture of claim 15 , wherein the first plurality of light emitting diodes are in contact with the first edge.

18. The lighting fixture of claim 15 , wherein the first member comprises a spring that includes metal.

19. The lighting fixture of claim 15 , wherein the first lightguide comprises a third edge that is substantially parallel to the first edge,

wherein the first member is disposed adjacent the third edge, and

wherein the first member comprises a spring clip formed from a metal-memory alloy.

20. The lighting fixture of claim 15 ,

wherein the frame comprises a notch that is dimensioned according to the dimensional tolerance and that provides a range of motion for the first assembly,

wherein at least a portion of the first assembly is disposed in the notch, and

wherein the first member comprises a spring finger.
