Abstract

A fixed or adjustable chain guide includes a captured shoulder bolt fastener. An adjustable chain guide such as a chain tensioner arm assembly includes a tensioner arm with a pivot bore defined about a pivot axis. The pivot bore includes an inner end opening through a rear face of the tensioner arm and an outer end opening through a front face of the tensioner arm. The tensioner arm further includes at least one resilient fastener retaining tab located adjacent the pivot bore. The shoulder bolt extends through the pivot bore and is engaged by the at least one resilient fastener retaining tab, and the at least one fastener retaining tab inhibits separation of the fastener from the tensioner arm. The fastener preferably includes an annular groove or other recess to be engaged by the one or more fastener retaining tabs in order to permit the tensioner arm to rotate relative to the fastener. New shoulder bolt fasteners are also defined, each including a shoulder region having at least one retaining feature such as an annular groove adapted to be engaged by a projecting portion of an associated component for axially capturing the fastener to the associated component while permitting rotation of the associated component relative to the fastener.

Claims (29)

1. A chain tensioner arm assembly comprising:

a one-piece molded polymeric tensioner arm comprising a pivot bore defined about a pivot axis, said pivot bore comprising an inner end opening through a rear face of the tensioner arm and an outer end opening through a front face of the tensioner arm, said pivot bore comprising a pivot bore diameter and at least one pocket located between said inner and outer ends of said bore and that opens through said pivot bore diameter, said at least one pocket comprising an outer wall;

said one-piece molded polymeric tensioner arm further comprising at least one resilient fastener retaining tab located adjacent said at least one pocket and resiliently deflectable radially outward with respect to said pivot bore toward said outer wall of said at least one pocket;

a fastener extending through said pivot bore and comprising a cylindrical shoulder region located in said pivot bore, said cylindrical shoulder region comprising a recess defined therein that is engaged by said at least one resilient fastener retaining tab such that a portion of said at least one fastener retaining tab is received in said recess and inhibits separation of said fastener from said tensioner arm.

2. The chain tensioner arm assembly as set forth in claim 1 , wherein said fastener comprises a shoulder bolt defined as a one-piece construction including said cylindrical shoulder region.

3. The chain tensioner arm assembly as set forth in claim 1 , wherein said at least one fastener retaining tab comprises a tip, wherein said tip is said portion of said at least one fastener retaining tab that is located in said recess.

4. The chain tensioner arm assembly as set forth in claim 3 , wherein said recess defined in said shoulder region comprises a groove such that said tensioner arm is adapted to pivot in a reciprocating manner about said shoulder region of said fastener when said tip of said at least one fastener retaining tab is located in said groove.

5. The chain tensioner arm assembly as set forth in claim 3 , wherein said fastener comprises a shoulder bolt defined as a multi-piece assembly including a bolt and a sleeve through which said bolt extends and to which said bolt is captured to prevent axial separation of said bolt from said sleeve, said sleeve defining said cylindrical shoulder region of said fastener in which said recess defined, wherein said tip of said at least one fastener retaining tab is located in said recess.

6. The chain tensioner arm assembly as set forth in claim 5 , wherein said recess defined in said shoulder region comprises an annular groove.

7. The chain tensioner arm assembly as set forth in claim 1 , wherein said fastener comprises a shoulder bolt defined as a multi-piece assembly including a bolt and a sleeve through which said bolt extends and to which said bolt is captured to prevent axial separation of said bolt from said sleeve, said sleeve defining said cylindrical shoulder region of said fastener.

8. The chain tensioner arm assembly as set forth in claim 1 , wherein:

said at least one pocket comprises a plurality of pockets each located between said inner and outer ends of said bore and opening through said pivot bore diameter, each of said pockets comprising an outer wall; and

said at least one resilient fastener retaining tab comprises a plurality of resilient fastener retaining tabs, each of which is located adjacent a respective one of said pockets and deflectable radially outward with respect to said pivot bore toward said outer wall of said respective pocket, wherein each of said plurality of resilient fastener tabs is engaged with said recess defined in said cylindrical shoulder region of said fastener.

9. The chain tensioner arm assembly as set forth in claim 8 , wherein said plurality of resilient fastener retaining tabs are arranged symmetrically relative to each other circumferentially about said pivot axis.

10. The chain tensioner arm assembly as set forth in claim 1 , wherein said outer wall of said at least one pocket extends axially, and wherein said pocket further comprises a transverse end wall to which said at least one fastener retaining tab is connected.

11. The chain tensioner arm assembly as set forth in claim 1 , further comprising:

a bracket abutted with said rear face of said tensioner arm, said bracket comprising a ramp surface supporting a free end of said tensioner arm that is spaced from said pivot bore.

12. The chain tensioner arm as set forth in claim 1 , wherein said at least one fastener retaining tab comprises a tip that projects radially into said pivot bore, wherein said tip is located either:

(i) closer to said rear face than said front face of said tensioner arm; or

(ii) closer to said front face than said rear face of said tensioner arm.

13. A chain guide comprising:

a one-piece molded polymeric arm comprising a bore defined about an axis, said bore comprising an inner end opening through a rear face of the arm and an outer end opening through a front face of the arm, said bore comprising a bore diameter and at least one pocket located between said inner and outer ends of said bore and that opens through said bore diameter, said at least one pocket comprising an outer wall;

said one-piece molded polymeric arm further comprising at least one resilient fastener retaining tab located adjacent said at least one pocket and deflectable radially outward with respect to said bore toward said outer wall of said at least one pocket;

a fastener extending through said bore and comprising a cylindrical shoulder region located in said bore, said cylindrical shoulder region comprising a recess defined therein that is engaged by said at least one resilient fastener retaining tab such that a portion of said at least one fastener retaining tab is received in said recess and inhibits separation of said fastener from said arm.

14. The chain guide as set forth in claim 13 , wherein:

said at least one pocket comprises a plurality of pockets each located between said inner and outer ends of said bore and opening through said bore diameter, each of said pockets comprising an outer wall; and

said at least one resilient fastener retaining tab comprises a plurality of resilient fastener retaining tabs, each of which is located adjacent a respective one of said pockets and deflectable radially outward with respect to said bore toward said outer wall of said respective pocket, wherein each of said plurality of resilient fastener tabs is engaged with said recess defined in said cylindrical shoulder region of said fastener.
