Abstract

Embodiments of the invention relate to tilting pad bearing assemblies and apparatuses. The disclosed tilting pad bearing assemblies and apparatuses may be employed in downhole motors of a subterranean drilling system or other mechanical systems. In an embodiment, a bearing assembly or apparatus includes a support ring and a plurality of tilting pads. Each tilting pad is tilted and/or tiltably secured relative to the support ring. In some embodiments, one or more of the tilting pads include a plurality of superhard bearing segments assembled to form a superhard bearing surface. One or more seams may be positioned between adjacent superhard bearing segments of the superhard bearing segments. In other embodiments, one or more of the tilting pads may include at least one or only one superhard bearing segment, such as a polycrystalline diamond bearing segment.

Claims (41)

1. A bearing apparatus, comprising:

a first bearing assembly including one or more first superhard bearing segments having one or more first superhard bearing surfaces; and

a second bearing assembly including:

a support ring; and

a plurality of tilting pads each of which is tilted and/or tiltably secured relative to the support ring, each of the plurality of tilting pads including:

a plurality of second superhard bearing segments assembled to form a substantially continuous second superhard bearing surface generally opposing the one or more first superhard bearing surfaces of the first bearing assembly, one or more seams positioned between adjacent second superhard bearing segments of the plurality of second superhard bearing segments.

2. The bearing apparatus of claim 1 wherein the plurality of second superhard bearing segments of one of the tilting pads are at least partially interlocked with each other.

3. The bearing apparatus of claim 2 wherein the substantially continuous second superhard bearing surface of one of the tilting pads includes a substantially planar geometry.

4. The bearing apparatus of claim 2 wherein the substantially continuous second superhard bearing surface of one of the tilting pads is substantially non-planar.

5. The bearing apparatus of claim 1 wherein each of the plurality of second superhard bearing segments includes a substrate and a superhard table bonded to the substrate.

6. The bearing apparatus of claim 5 wherein the superhard table includes at least one member selected from the group consisting of polycrystalline diamond, cubic boron nitride, and a diamond-silicon carbide composite.

7. The bearing apparatus of claim 1 wherein at least one of the plurality of seams includes a gap of about 0.001 mm to about 3.5 mm.

8. The bearing apparatus of claim 1 wherein at least one of the plurality of seams includes a gap of about 0.005 mm to about 1.0 mm.

9. The bearing apparatus of claim 1 wherein each of the plurality of tilting pads includes a support plate on which the plurality of second superhard bearing segments thereof are mounted.

10. The bearing apparatus of claim 9 wherein each of the plurality of tilting pads is tiltable about a respective tilt axis.

11. The bearing apparatus of claim 10 wherein the tilt axis is a radial axis relative to the support ring.

12. The bearing apparatus of claim 10 wherein the tilt axis is substantially parallel to a rotation axis of the support ring.

13. The bearing apparatus of claim 1 wherein each of the plurality of tilting pads includes a fixed tilting pad, an adjustable tilting pad, or a self-establishing tilting pad.

14. The bearing apparatus of claim 1 wherein the first and second bearing assembly are each configured as a thrust-bearing assembly or a radial bearing assembly.

15. The bearing apparatus of claim 1 wherein the one or more first superhard bearing surfaces of the first bearing assembly defines a substantially continuous first superhard bearing surface.

16. The bearing apparatus of claim 1 wherein the first bearing assembly is configured as a stator, and the second bearing assembly is configured as a rotor.

17. The bearing apparatus of claim 1 wherein the first bearing assembly is configured as a runner.

18. The bearing apparatus of claim 1 wherein the one or more first superhard bearing elements of the first bearing assembly includes a plurality of first superhard bearing elements assembled together to form a substantially continuous first superhard bearing surface.

19. A bearing apparatus, comprising:

a stator including one or more first polycrystalline diamond bearing segments having one or more first superhard bearing surfaces; and

a rotor including:

a support ring; and

a plurality of tilting pads each of which is tilted and/or tiltably secured relative to the support ring, each of the plurality of tilting pads including:

a plurality of second polycrystalline diamond bearing segments that collectively define a substantially continuous second superhard bearing surface generally opposing the one or more first superhard bearing surfaces of the stator, one or more seams positioned between adjacent second polycrystalline diamond bearing segments of the plurality of second polycrystalline diamond bearing segments.

20. The bearing apparatus of claim 19 wherein the one or more first polycrystalline diamond bearing elements of the stator includes a plurality of first polycrystalline diamond bearing elements assembled together to form a substantially continuous first superhard bearing surface.

21. A rotating machine, comprising:

a motor operable to apply torque to a rotary drill bit, the motor operably coupled to a thrust-bearing apparatus, the thrust-bearing apparatus including:

a stator including one or more first polycrystalline diamond bearing segments having one or more first superhard bearing surfaces; and

a rotor including:

a support ring; and

a plurality of tilting pads each of which is tilted and/or tiltably secured relative to the support ring, each of the plurality of tilting pads including:

a plurality of second polycrystalline diamond bearing segments assembled to form a substantially continuous second superhard bearing surface generally opposing the one or more first superhard bearing surfaces of the stator, one or more seams positioned between adjacent second polycrystalline diamond bearing segments of the plurality of second polycrystalline diamond bearing segments.

22. The rotating machine of claim 21 wherein the one or more first polycrystalline diamond bearing elements of the stator includes a plurality of first polycrystalline diamond bearing elements assembled together to form a substantially continuous first superhard bearing surface.

23. The rotating machine of claim 21 wherein each of the plurality of tilting pads includes a fixed tilting pad, an adjustable tilting pad, or a self-establishing tilting pad.
