Abstract

The present application is directed to methods and devices for reducing shoulder impingement for a person in a lying position. The device may comprise a generally tubular cuff having an inner radius defining an open passage through the cuff and extending from a proximal end to a distal end, an outer radius defining a sidewall thickness between the inner radius and the outer radius, and a length from the proximal end to the distal end. The outer diameter may be selected to provide a sidewall thickness that restricts movement of the arm such that shoulder flexion, extension, adduction, abduction, lateral rotation, and medial rotation are each limited.

Claims (30)

1. A method for reducing shoulder impingement for a person in a lying position, comprising the steps of:

providing a generally cylindrical cuff extending from a proximal end to a distal end comprising an inner radius defining an open passage through the cuff, the passage configured to releasably engage a forearm of the person therein; an outer radius defining a sidewall thickness between the inner radius and the outer radius; and a length from the proximal end to the distal end;

selecting an outer diameter of the cuff to provide a sidewall thickness that restricts movement of an arm of the person, wherein the length is greater than a length of an upper arm of the person and less than a length of the forearm of the person when the cuff is engaged on the forearm of the person; and

positioning the cuff on the forearm of the person in a lying position whereby shoulder flexion, extension, adduction, abduction, lateral rotation, and medial rotation are limited to a maximum of about 30 degrees thereby reducing shoulder impingement.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the length ranges from about 7 inches to about 14 inches.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the proximal end is near an elbow of the person and the distal end is near a wrist of the person when the cuff is positioned on the forearm of the person.

4. The method of claim 3 , wherein the outer radius tapers from the proximal end to the distal end.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the sidewall thickness ranges from about 3 inches to about 8 inches.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the cuff is constructed of a lightweight foam material.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein the foam material comprises polyethylene, urethane, polyurethane, neoprene, polystyrene, latex, or a combination thereof.

8. The method of claim 1 , further comprising a strap or harness.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the cuff further comprises an inflatable bladder to vary the inner radius thereby adjusting an amount of pressure exerted on the forearm.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein the cuff further comprises an inflatable bladder to vary the outer radius.

11. The method of claim 1 , wherein the cuff exudes one or more pharmaceutical agents.

12. The method of claim 1 , wherein the cuff is adapted to apply heat or cold.

13. A method for reducing shoulder impingement for a person in a lying position, comprising the steps of:

providing a generally cylindrical cuff extending from a proximal end to a distal end comprising an inner radius defining an open passage through the cuff, the passage configured to releasably engage a forearm of the person therein; an outer radius defining a sidewall thickness between the inner radius and the outer radius; and a length from the proximal end to the distal end;

selecting the outer radius of the cuff to provide a sidewall thickness that restricts rotational movement of an arm of the person to a maximum of 30 degrees such that impingement of soft tissue between a head of a humerus and an acromion is minimized; and

positioning the cuff on the forearm of the person in a lying position such that the proximal end is near an elbow of the person and the distal end is near a wrist of the person.

14. The method of claim 13 , wherein the length is greater than a length of an upper arm of the person and less than a length of the forearm of the person.

15. The method of claim 13 , wherein the length ranges from about 7 inches to about 14 inches.

16. The method of claim 13 , wherein the sidewall thickness ranges from about 3 inches to about 8 inches.

17. The method of claim 13 , wherein the outer radius tapers from the proximal end to the distal end.

18. The method of claim 13 , wherein the cuff is constructed of a lightweight foam material.

19. The method of claim 18 , wherein the foam material comprises polyethylene, urethane, polyurethane, neoprene, polystyrene, latex, or a combination thereof.

20. The method of claim 13 , further comprising a strap or harness.

21. The method of claim 13 , wherein the cuff further comprises an inflatable bladder to vary the inner radius thereby adjusting an amount of pressure exerted on the forearm.

22. The method of claim 13 , wherein the cuff further comprises an inflatable bladder to vary the outer radius.

23. The method of claim 13 , wherein the soft tissue comprises at least a portion of a rotator cuff.

24. The method of claim 13 , wherein the soft tissue comprises at least a portion of a bursa.
