Abstract

A faucet having an electronic valve is provided. The faucet includes a spout having a first end through which a fluid exits, a second end coupled to a faucet body, and a sidewall disposed between the first end and the second end. The spout extends along a curved longitudinal axis. A sensor is disposed completely within the spout along a curved portion of the sidewall. The sensor is operatively coupled to the electronic valve.

Claims (25)

1. A faucet having an electronic valve, comprising:

a spout having a tubular sidewall extending between a first end through which a fluid exits and a second end though which the fluid enters, wherein the tubular sidewall includes a curved portion extending along a curved longitudinal axis and having an underside apex located between the first and second ends, wherein the tubular sidewall includes an opening along an underside of the curved portion and a portion of the sensor is disposed in the opening;

a sensor disposed within the curved portion of the tubular sidewall proximate the underside apex, wherein the sensor is operatively coupled to the electronic valve; and

a sensor holder configured to retain the sensor in the spout, the sensor holder comprising:

a frame configured to secure the sensor to the curved portion adjacent to the underside apex of the curved portion, the frame having a front end extending toward the first end of the spout and a back end extending toward the second end of the spout;

a raised window along an underside of the frame and adjacent to the underside apex of the curved portion, the raised window configured to engage with the opening along the underside of the curved portion to position the sensor holder relative to the spout;

at least one leg disposed at the back end of the frame and extending in a vertical direction perpendicular to a longitudinal axis of the sensor holder; and

a tab extending from the front end of the frame, a position of the tab secured by a corresponding tab of a spray insert of the faucet;

wherein a horizontal motion of the sensor holder is inhibited by the raised window and a vertical motion of the sensor holder is inhibited by the at least one leg and the tab of the frame.

2. The faucet of claim 1 , wherein the tubular sidewall is seamless.

The faucet of claim 1 , further comprising a body, a handle coupled to the body, and a mechanical valve, which is disposed within the body, wherein the body extends away from the second end of the tubular sidewall of the spout, wherein the handle is configured to control operation of the faucet such that when the handle is in a first position, fluid does not flow from the spout, and when the handle is in a second position, fluid may flow from the spout if the electronic valve is open, and wherein a cable electrically connecting the sensor to the electronic valve extends through curved portion and into the body.

4. The faucet of claim 1 , wherein the sensor is configured to detect interruption of a field of detection having a predefined range.

5. The faucet of claim 4 , wherein the field of detection is substantially located below the underside of the curved portion above the first end of the tubular sidewall, and wherein the field of detection is substantially located rearward of the first end and forward of the second end.

6. The faucet of claim 1 , wherein the sensor comprises an emitter, the emitter configured to emit a beam of light, and the sensor configured to detect reflection of the beam back to the sensor.

7. A sensor holder for a sensor disposed completely within a spout and operatively connected to an electronic valve via a wire, the sensor holder comprising:

a frame configured to secure the sensor, the frame having a front end extending toward a first end of the spout through which a fluid exits and a back end extending toward a second end of the spout coupled to a faucet body;

a substantially horizontal raised window along an underside of the frame, the raised window configured to engage with an opening along an underside of the spout to position the sensor holder in a horizontal direction along a longitudinal axis of the spout;

at least two spaced-apart legs disposed at the back end of the frame and extending in a vertical direction perpendicular to a longitudinal axis of the sensor holder, wherein a space is provided between the at least two legs for routing of the wire through the space and beyond the back end of the frame; and

a tab extending from the front end of the frame, a position of the tab secured by a corresponding tab of a spray insert of the faucet,

wherein a horizontal motion of the sensor holder is inhibited by the substantially raised window and a vertical motion of the sensor holder is inhibited by the at least two legs and the tab.

8. The sensor holder of claim 7 , wherein the sensor holder is overmolded on the sensor.

9. The sensor holder of claim 7 , wherein the frame further comprises a plurality of projections disposed on an interior surface of the frame and configured to engage with the sensor and wire to secure the sensor to the frame.

10. The sensor holder of claim 7 , wherein the frame further comprises internal walls having a contour corresponding to a perimeter of an area at which the sensor connects to the wire.

The sensor holder of claim 7 , wherein a protrusion disposed on the corresponding tab of the spray insert is configured to engage with a slot disposed in the tab extending from the front end of the frame to prevent the sensor holder from being inadvertently pushed further into and down the spout.

The sensor holder of claim 7 , further comprising a wire cover configured to protect from abrasion a hose containing the fluid and the wire operatively connecting the sensor to the electronic valve when the spray head is detached from the spout, wherein the wire cover is coupled to the frame to surround a portion of the wire.
