Abstract

The present invention is directed to a prosthesis and method for treating, repairing, and/or replacing an abdominal aortic aneurysm. The prosthesis includes a coiled stent comprised of shape memory material having first and second anchoring zones and an intermediate zone. The prosthesis also includes graft material engaging at least a portion of the stent. During delivery of the prosthesis, the stent is in a substantially straight longitudinal configuration, and after delivery of the prosthesis the stent is returned to a coiled configuration. The diameter of the prosthesis may be adjusted by controlling the degree to which the stent is coiled.

Claims (26)

1 . A method for repairing an abdominal aortic aneurysm comprising:

delivering at least one prosthesis within an interior wall of a lumen, the prosthesis comprising:

a stent comprised of shape memory material; and

graft material engaging at least a portion of the stent;

during delivery of the prosthesis the stent is in a substantially straight configuration;

and after delivery of the prosthesis, returning the stent to a coiled configuration.

2 . The method of claim 1 , wherein returning the stent to a coiled configuration comprises feeding an additional length of the stent within the lumen.

3 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising anchoring the proximal end of the prosthesis within the interior wall of the lumen.

4 . The method of claim 3 , wherein the proximal end of the prosthesis is anchored by returning the stent to a coiled configuration.

5 . The method of claim 3 , wherein the proximal end of the prosthesis is anchored by attaching the prosthesis to another stent located within the interior wall of the lumen.

6 . The method of claim 5 , further comprising delivering a sealing device to an area where the prosthesis is attached to another stent.

7 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising anchoring a distal end of the prosthesis within the interior wall of the lumen.

8 . The method of claim 7 , wherein the distal end of the prosthesis is anchored by returning the stent to a coiled configuration.

9 . The method of claim 8 , wherein the distal end of the prosthesis is anchored by attaching the prosthesis to another stent located within the interior wall of the lumen.

10 . The method of claim 9 , further comprising delivering a sealing device to an area where the prosthesis is attached to another stent.

11 . The method of claim 1 , wherein during delivery of the prosthesis, the graft material has a profile diameter less than about fourteen French.

12 . The method of claim 1 , wherein returning the stent to a coiled configuration provides support for the graft material.

13 . The method of claim 1 further comprising adjusting the diameter of the prosthesis by controlling the degree to which the stent is coiled.
