Abstract

Systems, devices, and methods for treating a tissue site on a patient with reduced pressure are presented. In one instance, a reduced-pressure treatment device to treat a tissue site with reduced pressure may include a pump control unit fluidly separate from a collection unit. Pump energy may be provided by the pump control unit to deflect one or more diaphragms within the collection unit to create reduced pressure. Other systems, devices, and methods are presented.

Claims (52)

1. A reduced-pressure treatment device for applying a reduced pressure to a tissue site, the reduced-pressure treatment device comprising:

a fluid reservoir; a pump head comprising: at least one wall, a second wall, at least one diaphragm, a pump chamber, and an aperture, wherein:

the at least one diaphragm is anchored to the first wall of the pump head,

the aperture is disposed in the second wall of the pump head and is between the pump chamber and the fluid reservoir, and

the pump chamber is fluidly coupled to the fluid reservoir through the aperture and a pump control unit magnetically coupled to the pump head;

wherein the pump control unit is configured to actuate the at least one diaphragm to generate a reduced pressure in the pump chamber that is communicated from the pump chamber to the fluid reservoir and the tissue site and measure a displacement of the diaphragm,

wherein the pump control unit comprises an electromagnet to actuate the at least one diaphragm.

2. The reduced-pressure treatment device of claim 1 , wherein:

the pump control unit comprises an electromagnet to actuate the at least one diaphragm; and

the at least one diaphragm comprises a metal component.

3. The reduced-pressure treatment device of claim 1 , wherein the pump head provides reduced pressure directly to the fluid reservoir.

4. The reduced-pressure treatment device of claim 1 , further comprising a reduced-pressure delivery conduit fluidly coupled to the pump head so that fluid from the tissue site enters the pump head before entering the fluid reservoir.

5. The reduced-pressure treatment device of claim 1 , further comprising a reduced-pressure delivery conduit fluidly coupled to the pump head so that fluid from the tissue site enters the fluid reservoir before entering the pump head.

6. The reduced-pressure treatment device of claim 1 , further comprising a first one-way valve forming an input to the pump head, and a second one-way valve forming an outlet from the pump head.

7. The reduced-pressure treatment device of claim 1 , further comprising a membrane forming a portion of the fluid reservoir, the membrane being vapor-permeable.

8. The reduced-pressure treatment device of claim 1 , further comprising:

an air-movement device positioned in the pump control unit;

a membrane forming a portion of the fluid reservoir, the membrane being vapor-permeable;

a cover coupled to the fluid reservoir adjacent to the membrane, the cover having an air-movement diaphragm; and

wherein the air-movement device is configured to cause the air-movement diaphragm to move, causing air to move against the membrane.

9. The reduced-pressure treatment device of claim 1 , further comprising:

a fan positioned in the pump control unit; and

a membrane forming a portion of the fluid reservoir, the membrane being vapor-permeable;

wherein the fan is adapted to move air against the membrane.

10. A reduced-pressure treatment system for treating a tissue site, the system comprising:

a manifold having a plurality of flow channels therein and adapted to be placed proximate to the tissue site;

a sealing member adapted to be placed over the tissue site and the manifold; a fluid reservoir;

a pump head having at least one diaphragm anchored to a wall of the pump head and a pump chamber fluidly coupled to the fluid reservoir through an aperture between the pump head and the fluid reservoir; and

a pump control unit magnetically coupled to the pump head;

wherein the pump control unit is configured to actuate the at least one diaphragm to generate a reduced pressure in the pump chamber that is communicated from the pump chamber to the fluid reservoir and measure a displacement of the diaphragm, wherein the pump control unit comprises an electromagnet to actuate the at least one diaphragm.

11. The reduced-pressure treatment system of claim 10 , wherein:

the pump control unit comprises an electromagnet to actuate the at least one diaphragm; and

the at least one diaphragm comprises a metal component.

12. The reduced-pressure treatment system of claim 10 , wherein the pump head provides reduced pressure directly to the fluid reservoir.

13. The reduced-pressure treatment system of claim 10 , further comprising a reduced-pressure delivery conduit fluidly coupled to the pump head so that fluid from the tissue site enters the pump head before entering the fluid reservoir.

14. The reduced-pressure treatment system of claim 10 , further comprising a reduced-pressure delivery conduit fluidly coupled to the pump head so that fluid from the tissue site enters the fluid reservoir before entering the pump head.

15. The reduced-pressure treatment system of claim 10 , further comprising a first one-way valve forming an input to the pump head, and a second one-way valve forming an outlet from the pump head.

16. The reduced-pressure treatment system of claim 10 , further comprising a membrane forming a portion of the fluid reservoir, the membrane being vapor-permeable.

17. The reduced-pressure treatment system of claim 10 , further comprising:

an air-movement device positioned in the pump control unit;

a membrane forming a portion of the fluid reservoir, the membrane being vapor-permeable;

a cover coupled to the fluid reservoir adjacent to the membrane, the cover having an air-movement diaphragm; and

wherein the air-movement device is configured to cause the air-movement diaphragm to move, causing air to move against the membrane.

18. The reduced-pressure treatment system of claim 10 , further comprising:

a fan positioned in the pump control unit; and

a membrane forming a portion of the fluid reservoir, the membrane being vapor-permeable;

wherein the fan is adapted to move air against the membrane.

19. A reduced-pressure treatment device for use with a system for treating a tissue site on a patient with reduced pressure, the reduced-pressure treatment device comprising:

a fluid reservoir;

a pump head fluidly coupled to the fluid reservoir and having a first diaphragm and a second diaphragm; and
