Forward osmosis membranes
Forward osmosis membranes include an active layer and a thin support layer. A bilayer substrate including a removable backing layer may allow forward osmosis membranes with reduced supporting layer thickness to be processed on existing manufacturing lines.
1. A forward osmosis membrane, comprising:
a support structure having a first side and a second side and comprising a polymeric material, a thickness of less than 2 mils, and a Frazier air permeability of greater than about 100 ft 3 /ft 2 /min;
a membrane support layer disposed on the first side of the support structure and comprising a polymer loading of about 5 g/m 2 to about 20 g/m 2 and a thickness of less than 2 mils; and
a selective barrier layer disposed on the membrane support layer and comprising a semipermeable, three-dimensional polymer network comprising polybenzimidazole and polyamide, the selective barrier layer having a thickness of less than 200 nm.
2. The membrane of claim 1 , wherein the selective barrier layer comprises a thickness of less than 100 nm.
3. The membrane of claim 1 , wherein the membrane support layer further comprises polyethersulfone.
4. The membrane of claim 1 , wherein the membrane support layer further comprises a hydrophilic additive.
5. The membrane of claim 4 , wherein the hydrophilic additive comprises 0.1% to 1.0% of polyvinylpyrrolidone.
6. The membrane of claim 1 , wherein the membrane support layer further comprises a polymer concentration in solution of about 13%.
7. The membrane of claim 1 , wherein the support structure comprises a polymeric paper.
8. The membrane of claim 7 , wherein the polymeric paper comprises at least one of polyethylene terephthalate or polypropylene.
9. The membrane of claim 1 , further comprising a mesh material disposed on the second side of the support structure.
