COMPACT BIOMETRIC ACQUISITION SYSTEM AND METHOD
A method of determining the identity of a subject while the subject is walking or being transported in an essentially straight direction is disclosed, the two dimensional profile of the subject walking or being transported along forming a three dimensional swept volume, without requiring the subject to change direction to avoid any part of the system, comprising acquiring data related to one or more biometrics of the subject with the camera(s), processing the acquired biometrics data, and determining if the acquired biometric data match corresponding biometric data stored in the system, positioning camera(s) and strobed or scanned infrared illuminator(s) above, next to, or below the swept volume. A system for carrying out the method is also disclosed.
1 . A method for optimized acquisition of biometric data from an unconstrained subject, the method comprising:
(a) acquiring, by a sensor at a first rate of acquisition, a first set biometric data from an unconstrained subject in motion, the subject under illumination from at least a first spectrum of a plurality of discrete light spectra; and
(b) acquiring, by the sensor at a second rate of acquisition interleaved with the acquisition at the first rate of acquisition, a second set of biometric data from the unconstrained subject, the subject under illumination from a second spectrum of the plurality of discrete light spectra that is different from the first spectrum.

The method of claim 1 , further comprising acquiring, by the sensor at the second rate of acquisition interleaved with the acquisition of the first and second sets of biometric data, a third set of biometric data from the subject, the subject under illumination from a third spectrum of the plurality of discrete light spectra.
3 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising controlling at least one light source to provide illumination corresponding to one or more of the plurality of discrete light spectra.
4 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising providing illumination from the first spectrum of the plurality of discrete light spectra, each of the plurality of discrete light spectra comprising a single wavelength of light.
5 . The method of claim 1 , wherein (a) comprises acquiring the first set biometric data from the subject under illumination from the first spectrum and the second spectrum of the plurality of discrete light spectra.
6 . The method of claim 1 , wherein (a) comprises acquiring the first set biometric data from the subject under illumination from the plurality of discrete light spectra.
7 . The method of claim 1 , wherein (a) comprises acquiring the first set of biometric data, the first set of biometric data of a quality higher than that of the second set of biometric data.
8 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising storing the first and second sets of biometric data with an indication of the corresponding spectral conditions.
9 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising performing biometric matching using at least the acquired first set of biometric data.
10 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising performing liveness detection based at least in part on the acquired second set of biometric data.
11 . The method of claim 1 , wherein (a) comprises acquiring biometric data comprising any one or more of: face, skin, eye and iris data.
12 . The method of claim 1 , wherein (a) comprises acquiring biometric data at the first rate of acquisition, the first rate equal to or higher than the second rate of acquisition.
13 . A system for optimized acquisition of biometric data from an unconstrained subject, the system comprising:
at least one light source, providing illumination corresponding to one or more of a plurality of discrete light spectra; and
a sensor, acquiring at a first rate of acquisition, a first set biometric data from an unconstrained subject in motion, the subject under illumination from at least a first spectrum of a plurality of discrete light spectra, and acquiring, at a second rate of acquisition interleaved with the acquisition at the first rate of acquisition, a second set of biometric data from the subject, the subject under illumination from a second spectrum of the plurality of discrete light spectra that is different from the first spectrum.

The system of claim 13 , wherein the sensor acquires, at the second rate of acquisition interleaved with the acquisition of the first and second sets of biometric data, a third set of biometric data from the subject, the subject under illumination from a third spectrum of the plurality of discrete light spectra.
15 . The system of claim 13 , further comprising an illumination control, the illumination control controlling the at least one light source to provide illumination corresponding to one or more of the plurality of discrete light spectra.
16 . The system of claim 13 , wherein the at least one light source provides illumination from the plurality of discrete light spectra, each of the plurality of discrete light spectra comprising a single wavelength of light.
17 . The system of claim 13 , wherein the sensor acquires the first set biometric data from the subject under illumination from the first spectrum and the second spectrum of the plurality of discrete light spectra.
18 . The system of claim 13 , wherein the sensor acquires the first set biometric data from the subject under illumination from the plurality of discrete light spectra.
19 . The system of claim 13 , wherein the sensor acquires the first set of biometric data, the first set of biometric data of a quality higher than that of the second set of biometric data.
20 . The system of claim 13 , wherein the system stores the first and second sets of biometric data with an indication of the corresponding spectral conditions.
21 . The system of claim 13 , further comprising a processor for performing biometric matching using at least the acquired first set of biometric data.
22 . The system of claim 13 , further comprising a processor for performing liveness detection based at least in part on the acquired second set of biometric data.
23 . The system of claim 13 , wherein the sensor acquires biometric data comprising any one or more of: face, skin, eye and iris data.
24 . The system of claim 13 , wherein the sensor acquires biometric data at the first rate of acquisition, the first rate equal to or higher than the second rate of acquisition.
