Abstract

Electrical surgical device comprising a handle shaped to be held within one hand, the handle having a self-contained power source, at least part of an end effector control assembly connected to the power source, a switch connected to the power source and operable to selectively power the end effector control assembly with the power source, and an articulation control device, wherein both the switch and the articulation control device are operated with the one hand holding the handle; an articulating connection operated by the articulation control device; and a surgical end effector connected to the handle by the articulating connection such that articulation of the surgical end effector is controlled by operation of the articulation control device and operatively connected to the end effector control assembly such that, upon operation of the end effector control assembly, the surgical end effector is operable to carry out at least one surgical procedure.

Claims (52)

1. A hand-held, electrically powered and controlled surgical device, comprising:

a handle shaped to be held within one hand of a user, the handle having:

a self-contained electric power source;

at least part of an end effector control assembly electrically connected to the power source; and

a first switch and a second switch, wherein at least the second switch is electrically connected to the power source, and wherein:

the first switch selectively operates a first component of the end effector control assembly;

the second switch selectively powers a second component of the end effector control assembly with the power source; and

the first switch and the second switch are configured to permit operation of the switches with the one hand of the user that is holding the handle; and

a surgical end effector operatively connected to the end effector control assembly such that the surgical end effector is operable to carry out at least one electrically powered surgical procedure when the first switch and the second switch are selected.

2. The device according to claim 1 , wherein the power source is comprised of at least one battery cell.

3. The device according to claim 2 , wherein the battery cell is a lithium-based battery cell.

4. The device according to claim 1 , wherein the surgical end effector is a stapling and cutting surgical end effector operable to staple and cut tissue disposed at the surgical end effector upon operation of the end effector control assembly.

5. The device according to claim 4 , wherein the end effector control assembly is comprised of:

at least part of an anvil control assembly; and

at least part of an electrically-powered stapler control assembly electrically connected to the power source.

6. A hand-held, electrically powered and controlled surgical device, comprising:

a handle shaped to be held within one hand of a user, the handle having:

a self-contained electric power source;

at least part of an end effector control assembly electrically connected to the power source, the end effector control assembly comprising:

at least part of an anvil control assembly; and

at least part of an electrically-powered stapler control assembly electrically connected to the power source; and

a first switch and a second switch, wherein at least the second switch is electrically connected to the power source, and wherein:

the first switch selectively operates the at least part of the anvil control assembly;

the second switch selectively powers the at least part of the stapler control assembly with the power source; and

the first switch and the second switch are configured to permit operation of the switches with the one hand of the user that is holding the handle; and

a surgical end effector operatively connected to the end effector control assembly such that the surgical end effector is operable to staple tissue disposed at the surgical end effector when the first switch and the second switch are selected.

7. The device according to claim 6 , Wherein the surgical end effector comprises:

an anvil operatively connected to the at least part of the anvil control assembly; and

a stapler operatively connected to the at least part of the stapler control assembly, the stapler positioned opposite the anvil such that, together, the stapler and the anvil are operable to staple tissue disposed therebetween.

8. The device according to claim 7 , wherein:

the anvil control assembly is operable to selectively close the anvil and compress the tissue disposed between the stapler and the anvil when the first switch is selected to operate the anvil control assembly; and

the second switch is operable to selectively power the at least part of the stapler control assembly such that the stapler carries out a staple procedure upon the compressed tissue when the second switch is selected to power the stapler control assembly.

9. The device according to claim 6 , wherein the power source is comprised of at least one battery cell.

10. The device according to claim 9 , wherein the battery cell is a lithium-based battery cell.

11. A hand-held, electrically powered and controlled surgical device, comprising:

a handle shaped to be held within one hand of a user, the handle having:

a self-contained electric power source;

at least part of an end effector control assembly electrically connected to the power source, the end effector control assembly comprising:

at least part of an anvil control assembly; and

at least part of an electrically-powered stapler control assembly electrically connected to the power source; and

a first switch and a second switch, wherein at least the second switch is electrically connected to the power source, and wherein:

the first switch selectively operates the at least part of the anvil control assembly;

the second switch selectively powers the at least part of the stapler control assembly with the power source; and

the first switch and the second switch are configured to permit operation of the switches with the one hand of the user that is holding the handle; and

a surgical end effector, comprising:

an anvil operatively connected to the at least part of the anvil control assembly; and

a stapler operatively connected to the at least part f the stapler control assembly, the stapler positioned opposite the anvil such that, together, the stapler and the anvil are operable to staple tissue disposed therebetween when the first switch and the second switch are selected.

12. The device according to claim 11 , wherein:

the anvil control assembly is operable to selectively close the anvil and compress the tissue disposed between the stapler and the anvil when the first switch is selected to operate the anvil control assembly; and

the second switch is operable to selectively power the at least part of the stapler control assembly such that the stapler carries out a staple procedure upon the compressed tissue when the second switch is selected to power the stapler control assembly.

13. The device according to claim 11 , wherein the power source is comprised of at least one battery cell.

14. The device according to claim 13 , wherein the battery cell is a lithium-based battery cell.
