Abstract

A backup image generator can create a primary image and periodic delta images of all or part of a primary server. The images can be sent to a network attached storage device and one or more remote storage servers. In the event of a failure of the primary server, an updated primary image may be used to provide an up-to-date version of the primary system at a backup or other system. As a result, the primary data storage may be timely backed-up, recovered and restored with the possibility of providing server and business continuity in the event of a failure.

Claims (44)

1. A method comprising:

receiving a first image of a first computer system at a second computer system, the second computer system being remote from the first computer system;

receiving a first plurality of delta images at the second computer system, each delta image of the first plurality of delta images representing an incremental change in the first computer system;

operating the second computer system based upon the first image and the first plurality of delta images;

providing a second image to a third computer system, the third computer system being remote from the second computer system, wherein the second image is an image of the second computer system; and

providing a second plurality of delta images to the third computer system, each delta image of the second plurality of delta images representing an incremental change in a state of the second computer system.

2. A method as recited in claim 1 , further comprising generating the second image.

3. A method as recited in claim 2 , wherein the second image is an image of the second computer system.

4. A method as recited in claim 2 , wherein the second image is a replica of the first image.

5. A method as recited in claim 1 , further comprising generating each of the second plurality of delta images.

6. A method as recited in claim 5 , wherein each of the second plurality of delta images is a replica of one of the first plurality of delta images.

7. A method as recited in claim 1 , wherein the third computer system is the first computer system.

8. A method as recited in claim 1 , further comprising operating the second computer system in response to determining that the first computer system has failed.

9. A method as recited in claim 8 , further comprising a step of diagnosing the failure of the first computer system to determine whether the failure is one that can be restored using the second computer system.

10. A method as recited in claim 1 , further comprising operating the third computer system in response to determining that the second computer system has failed.

11. A method as recited in claim 10 , further comprising a step of diagnosing the failure of the second computer system to determine whether the failure is one that can be restored using the third computer system.

12. A method as recited in claim 1 , further comprising operating the third computer system in response to determining that the first computer system has failed.

13. A method as recited in claim 12 , further comprising a step of diagnosing the failure of the first computer system to determine whether the failure is one that can be restored using the third computer system.

14. A method as recited in claim 1 , further comprising a step of receiving a restoration request from a user of the first computer system, wherein the step of operating the second computer system is performed in response to the restoration request.

15. A method as recited in claim 1 , wherein the first image comprises a virtual hard drive.

16. A method as recited in claim 1 , wherein the second image comprises a virtual hard drive.

17. A system comprising:

a processor; and

a computer readable storage storing instructions which cause the processor to:

receive a first image of a first computer system at a second computer system remote from the first computer system;

receive a first plurality of delta images at the second computer system, each delta image of the first plurality of delta images representing an incremental change in the first computer system;

operate the second computer system based upon the first image and the first plurality of delta images;

provide a second image to a third computer system, the third computer system being remote from the second computer system, wherein the second image is an image of the second computer system; and

provide a second plurality of delta images to the third computer system, each delta image of the second plurality of delta images representing an incremental change in a state of the second computer system.

18. A system as recited in claim 17 , said instructions further causing the processor to generate the second image.

19. A system as recited in claim 18 , wherein the second image is an image of the second computer system.

20. A system as recited in claim 18 , wherein the second image is a replica of the first image.

21. A system as recited in claim 17 , said instructions further causing the processor to generate each of the second plurality of delta images.

22. A system as recited in claim 21 , wherein each of the second plurality of delta images is a replica of one of the first plurality of delta images.

23. A system as recited in claim 17 , wherein the third computer system is the first computer system.

24. A system as recited in claim 17 , wherein the step of operating the second computer system is performed in response to determining that the first computer system has failed.

25. A system as recited in claim 24 , said instructions further causing the processor to diagnose the failure of the first computer system to determine whether the failure is one that can be restored using the second computer system.

26. A system as recited in claim 17 , said processor further configured to operate the third computer system in response to determining that the second computer system has failed.

27. A system as recited in claim 26 , said instructions further causing the processor to diagnose the failure of the second computer system to determine whether the failure is one that can be restored using the third computer system.

28. A system as recited in claim 26 , said processor further configured to operate the third computer system in response to determining that the first computer system has failed.

29. A system as recited in claim 28 , said instructions further causing the processor to diagnose the failure of the first computer system to determine whether the failure is one that can be restored using the third computer system.

30. A system as recited in claim 17 , said instructions further causing the processor to receive a restoration request from a user of the first computer system, wherein the step of operating the second computer system is performed in response to the restoration request.

31. A system as recited in claim 17 , wherein the first image comprises a virtual hard drive.

32. A system as recited in claim 17 , wherein the second image comprises a virtual hard drive.
