Abstract

An orthopaedic implant comprises a fixation plate and an articulation component comprising a bearing surface and an opposing securement surface formed of a porous material. The orthopaedic implant further includes at least one fastener extending through the fixation plate and secured within the porous material of the securement surface of the articulation component.

Claims (28)

1. An orthopaedic implant, comprising:

a fixation plate;

an articulation component comprising (1) an articulation head having an outer surface forming an articulation surface and a reverse surface opposite the outer surface and (2) a securement disk having an attachment surface that is disposed adjacent the reverse surface of the articulation head and a surface opposite the attachment surface that forms a securement surface, wherein at least the securement surface is formed of a porous material; and

at least one fastener extending through the fixation plate and cutting into and secured by the porous material of the securement surface of the securement disk.

2. The implant of claim 1 , wherein at least one radial slot is formed in the securement surface and adapted to accept the at least one fastener.

3. The implant of claim 2 , wherein a shorter fastener is secured within the radial slot near an inner edge of the slot and a longer fastener is secured within the radial slot near an outer edge of the slot, thereby allowing flexibility in the length of fastener used with the articulation component.

4. The implant of claim 2 , wherein the radial slot extends into the securement disk between the securement surface and the attachment surface.

5. The implant of claim 4 , wherein the radial slot includes at least one wall along extending outwardly from at least a portion of a perimeter of the slot, wherein the fastener engages the at least one wall and a wall forming the slot to retain the fastener within the slot.

6. The implant of claim 5 , further including a plurality of fasteners and a plurality of radial slots within the securement disk, wherein each of the plurality of fasteners is secured within a respective radial slot of the plurality of radial slots.

7. The implant of claim 1 , wherein the securement disk is formed of titanium foam.

8. An orthopaedic implant, comprising:

a fixation plate;

an articulation component made of a material other than natural bone and comprising a bearing surface and an opposing securement surface formed of a porous material;

at least one radial slot formed within the securement surface of the articulation component; and

at least one fastener extending through the fixation plate and secured within the at least one radial slot by the porous material of the securement surface of the articulation component.

9. The implant of claim 8 , wherein the articulation component further includes:

an articulation head having a convex outer surface forming the bearing surface and a reverse surface opposite the convex outer surface; and

a securement disk having an attachment surface that is disposed adjacent the reverse surface of the articulation head and a second surface opposite the attachment surface that forms the securement surface.

10. The implant of claim 9 , wherein the securement disk is formed of titanium foam.

11. The implant of claim 8 , wherein a shorter fastener is secured within the radial slot near an inner edge of the slot and a longer fastener is secured within the radial slot near an outer edge of the slot, thereby allowing flexibility in the length of fastener used with the articulation component.

12. The implant of claim 8 , wherein the radial slot extends into the securement disk between the securement surface and the attachment surface.

13. The implant of claim 12 , wherein the radial slot includes at least one wall along extending outwardly from at least a portion of a perimeter of the slot, wherein the fastener engages the at least one wall and a wall forming the slot to retain the fastener within the slot.

14. The implant of claim 13 , further including a plurality of fasteners and a plurality of radial slots within the securement disk, wherein each of the plurality of fasteners is secured within a respective radial slot of the plurality of radial slots.

15. An orthopaedic implant, comprising:

a fixation plate;

an articulation component constructed with a biocompatible metal and comprising a bearing surface and an opposing securement surface formed of a porous material;

at least one radial slot formed within the securement surface of the articulation component; and

at least one fastener extending through the fixation plate and secured within the at least one radial slot by cutting into the porous material of the securement surface of the articulation component.
