Abstract

A compressive patient warming device is provided. The device includes an elastic inner layer that conforms snugly to a shape of an appendage of a patient so that the inner layer wraps around and substantially contacts most of an underlying surface area of the appendage. An outer layer is attached to and covers the inner layer to form a space that holds a heat transfer medium between the inner layer and the outer layer while the inner layer is wrapped around the appendage. The outer layer may be a rigid layer, and a predetermined compressive load may be applied to the outer layer to encourage blood flow in the appendage. A source of heat may be applied to the device to maintain normothermia and/or treat hypothermia.

Claims (31)

1. A compressive patient warming device comprising:

an elastic inner layer that conforms snugly to a shape of an appendage of a patient so that the inner layer wraps around and substantially contacts most of an underlying surface area of the appendage;

an outer layer attached to and covering the inner layer to form a space to hold a heat transfer medium between the inner layer and the outer layer while the inner layer is wrapped around the appendage; and

an intermediate layer sealed to the outer layer at an outer border and disposed between the inner layer and outer layer, the outer layer being attached to the inner layer via the intermediate layer, and wherein:

the intermediate layer and outer layer form a wrap comprising:

a generally longitudinal central portion sized to cover a surface of the appendage, and

a continuous fluid flow path extending between the intermediate layer and the outer layer between a fluid inlet and a fluid outlet so as simultaneously to inflate the wrap and apply pressure and heat to a body portion being surrounded by the wrap, and

wherein the inner layer comprises a tight fitting elastic sleeve attached to the intermediate layer along a longitudinal axis of the central portion of the wrap and is configured to slide onto the appendage.

2. The device of claim 1 , wherein the heat transfer medium that conforms to the appendage along with the inner layer comprises one or more of a visco-elastic foam, a viscous gel, sand, heat transferring beads, or any combination thereof.

3. The device of claim 1 , wherein the outer layer is an insulating material.

4. The device of claim 1 , further comprising a plurality of flaps extending from opposite sides of the central portion, wherein one or more flaps from the opposite sides fasten to each other to surround the body portion.

5. The device of claim 4 , wherein the plurality of flaps extends from the central portion of the wrap and is defined by the outer border of the wrap.

6. The device of claim 5 , further comprising one or more fasteners by which the one or more flaps from the opposite sides fasten to each other to surround the body portion.

7. The device of claim 6 , wherein the one or more fasteners each comprise a fastener selected from the group consisting of hook and loop fasteners, adhesive tabs, buttons, snaps, or press and seal fasteners.

8. The device of claim 1 , wherein at least about 90% of a surface of the inner layer contacts the underlying surface area.

9. The device of claim 1 , wherein the outer layer is an elastic material that has a circumference that is greater than a circumference of the inner layer.

10. The device of claim 1 , wherein the inner layer has a length and a circumference configured to fit an arm and hand of the patient.

11. The device of claim 1 , wherein the inner layer has a length and a circumference configured to fit a lower leg of the patient.

12. A method for warming and applying a compressive force on an appendage of a patient, the method comprising:

inserting an appendage of the patient into an elastic inner layer of a compressive patient warming device, the inner layer conforming snugly to an irregular shape of the appendage so that the inner layer wraps around and substantially contacts most of a surface area of the appendage;

fastening a wrap around the elastic inner layer so that the elastic inner layer is concentric with the wrap, the wrap comprising:

a first compliant layer and a second compliant layer that are sealed together around an outer border to contain a liquid therebetween and to surround and conform to the appendage;

a generally longitudinal portion sized to fit a length of the appendage; and

a plurality of flaps extending from opposite sides of a central portion,

wherein one or more flaps from the opposite sides fasten to each other to surround a body portion, and the flaps are openable during functional use to provide access to an underlying patient body surface; and

directing a warm liquid, via a fluid inlet, into a continuous fluid flow path extending between the first compliant layer and the second compliant layer, so as simultaneously to deliver heat and inflate the wrap to apply a predetermined compressive force on the surrounded appendage.

13. The method of claim 12 , wherein the warm liquid is at a temperature of about ambient temperature to about 41° C.

14. The method of claim 12 , wherein the surface area of the appendage comprises about 5% to about 10% of a total surface area of the patient's body.

15. The method of claim 12 , further comprising, directing the warm liquid from the continuous fluid flow path to a fluid outlet.

16. The method of claim 12 , further comprising connecting a fluid control pump to the fluid inlet.

17. The method of claim 16 , wherein directing the warm liquid comprises pumping heating and pumping the warm liquid into the continuous fluid flow path with the fluid control pump.
