Abstract

An implantable intraocular physiological sensor for measuring a physiological characteristic, such as intraocular pressure. The implantable intraocular physiological sensor may include a tubular main body configured to house one or more electrical components. The implantable intraocular physiological sensor may also include a sensor cap configured to be inserted into a first end of the tubular main body with a moisture barrier seal. The implantable intraocular physiological sensor may wirelessly transmit measurements to an external device.

Claims (28)

1. An implantable intraocular physiological measurement device comprising:

a tubular main body;

a sensor cap with a peripheral mating surface to physically couple with a first end of the tubular main body with a moisture barrier seal, the sensor cap comprising an outward-facing sensor configured to measure a physiological characteristic of an organism; and

a circuit board carrier member inside the tubular main body, the carrier member having mounted thereon one or more electrical components for controlling the sensor,

wherein the sensor cap further comprises an inward-facing cutout to physically couple with the carrier member by physically coupling the sensor cap with the first end of the tubular main body.

2. The implantable intraocular physiological measurement device of claim 1 , further comprising a tip cap configured to physically couple with a second end of the tubular main body with a moisture barrier seal.

3. The implantable intraocular physiological measurement device of claim 1 , wherein the moisture barrier seal comprises one or more O-rings at an interior junction between the tubular main body and the sensor cap.

4. The implantable intraocular physiological measurement device of claim 1 , wherein the moisture barrier seal comprises material applied at an exterior junction between the tubular main body and the sensor cap.

5. The implantable intraocular physiological measurement device of claim 1 , wherein the sensor comprises an intraocular pressure sensor.

6. The implantable intraocular physiological measurement device of claim 5 , wherein the intraocular pressure sensor comprises a microelectromechanical system (MEMS) variable capacitor.

7. The implantable intraocular physiological measurement device of claim 1 , wherein the sensor is configured to physically electrically connect to the one or more electrical components when the sensor cap is coupled with the carrier member.

8. The implantable intraocular physiological measurement device of claim 7 , wherein the carrier member comprises one or more electrical contacts and one or more signal traces, and wherein the sensor electrically connects to the one or more electrical components via the one or more electrical contacts and signal traces.

9. The implantable intraocular physiological measurement device of claim 1 , wherein the sensor cap comprises one or more feedthrough conductors extending through a body of the sensor cap from the sensor to a junction where the sensor becomes electrically connected to at least one of the electrical components when the sensor cap is inserted into the tubular main body.

10. The implantable intraocular physiological measurement device of claim 1 , wherein the sensor cap comprises a plug portion that is configured to be inserted into the tubular main body and a head portion that extends from the tubular main body when the plug portion is inserted into the tubular main body.

11. The implantable intraocular physiological measurement device of claim 1 , wherein the sensor cap is fully recessed within the tubular main body when the sensor cap is physically coupled with the tubular main body.

12. The implantable intraocular physiological measurement device of claim 1 , wherein the tubular main body is formed of ceramic to provide a moisture barrier for protection of the one or more electrical components.

13. The implantable intraocular physiological measurement device of claim 1 , further comprising an antenna that spirals about an inner diameter of the tubular main body.

14. The implantable intraocular physiological measurement device of claim 13 , wherein the antenna encircles the one or more electrical components.

15. The implantable intraocular physiological measurement device of claim 13 , wherein the antenna is configured to wirelessly transmit measurement values to, and to wirelessly receive power for charging a battery from, an external device.

16. The implantable intraocular physiological measurement device of claim 1 , wherein one of the one or more electrical components comprises a controller configured to cause the sensor to perform measurements at regular intervals.

17. The implantable intraocular physiological measurement device of claim 16 , wherein the measurements are stored in a measurement memory.

18. The implantable intraocular physiological measurement device of claim 17 , wherein the measurements are compressed using a data compression algorithm before being stored in the measurement memory.

19. The implantable intraocular physiological measurement device of claim 1 , wherein the sensor cap is formed of glass.

20. The implantable intraocular physiological measurement device of claim 1 , further comprising a battery configured to power the one or more electrical components.

21. The implantable intraocular physiological measurement device of claim 1 , wherein the device is configured to be implanted into a supraciliary/suprachoroidal space of a human eye.

22. The implantable intraocular physiological measurement device of claim 1 , wherein the moisture barrier seal comprises a solder ring.

23. The implantable intraocular physiological measurement device of claim 1 , wherein the moisture barrier seal comprises a eutectic ring.

24. The implantable intraocular physiological measurement device of claim 1 , wherein the sensor cap is configured to be inserted into the first end of the tubular main body.
