Abstract

A method includes receiving, from a user via an electronic device, input representing a password to be utilized for an account; automatically determining, utilizing a processor, a complexity value for the input password; automatically determining, based on the determined complexity value, security settings for the account; receiving, from a user via an electronic device, input representing an attempt to login to the account, the input representing an attempt to login to the account including an attempted password; automatically determining that the attempted password does not match the password to be utilized for the account; and determining a course of action to take in response to the determination that the attempted password does not match the password to be utilized for the account, the course of action being determined based at least in part on the automatically determined security settings for the account.

Claims (39)

1. A method comprising:

(a) receiving, from a user via an electronic device, input representing a password to be utilized for an account;

(b) automatically determining, utilizing a processor, a complexity value for the input password;

(c) automatically determining, based on the determined complexity value, a number of password attempts allowed for the account;

(d) receiving, from a user via an electronic device, input representing an attempt to login to the account, the input representing an attempt to login to the account including an attempted password;

(e) automatically determining that the attempted password does not match the password to be utilized for the account;

(f) determining a proximity score comparing the attempted password to the actual password; and

(g) increasing, based on the determined proximity score, the number of password attempts allowed;

(h) wherein the proximity score indicates a degree of likelihood that the user who entered the input corresponding to the attempted password is in fact the holder of the account;

(i) wherein determining the proximity score comprises utilizing natural language processing.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the electronic device comprises a tablet.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the electronic device comprises a desktop computer.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the electronic device comprises a laptop computer.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein receiving input comprises receiving input via a touchscreen.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein receiving input comprises receiving input via a keyboard.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein receiving input comprises receiving input via a virtual keyboard displayed on a touchscreen.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein determining the proximity score comprises utilizing alphanumeric matching.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein determining the proximity score comprises utilizing gestural matching.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein the method further includes making a probabilistic assessment of the likelihood that the user who entered the input corresponding to the attempted password is in fact the holder of the account.

11. A method comprising:

(a) receiving, from a user via an electronic device, input representing a password to be utilized for an account;

(b) automatically determining, utilizing a processor, a complexity value for the input password;

(c) automatically determining, based on the determined complexity value, a number of password attempts allowed for the account;

(d) receiving, from a user via an electronic device, input representing an attempt to login to the account, the input representing an attempt to login to the account including an attempted password;

(e) automatically determining that the attempted password does not match the password to be utilized for the account;

(f) determining a proximity score comparing the attempted password to the actual password; and

(g) increasing, based on the determined proximity score, the number of password attempts allowed;

(h) wherein the proximity score indicates a degree of likelihood that the user who entered the input corresponding to the attempted password is in fact the holder of the account;

(i) wherein determining the proximity score comprises utilizing spatial proximity matching.

12. A method comprising:

(a) receiving, from a user via an electronic device, input representing a password to be utilized for an account;

(b) automatically determining, utilizing a processor, a complexity value for the input password;

(c) automatically determining, based on the determined complexity value, a number of password attempts allowed for the account;

(d) receiving, from a user via an electronic device, input representing an attempt to login to the account, the input representing an attempt to login to the account including an attempted password;

(e) automatically determining that the attempted password does not match the password to be utilized for the account;

(f) determining a proximity score comparing the attempted password to the actual password; and

(g) increasing, based on the determined proximity score, the number of password attempts allowed;

(h) wherein the proximity score indicates a degree of likelihood that the user who entered the input corresponding to the attempted password is in fact the holder of the account;

(i) wherein the proximity score is determined based on hashes.
