Abstract

A spinal stabilization system, method, and a surgical kit having a surgical extender apparatus for implanting a surgical screw are disclosed. The extender includes a housing having a distal end and a proximal end, a hollow interior passageway disposed between the distal end and the proximal end, a channel disposed along an exterior surface of the housing at least partially between the distal end and the proximal end and configured to at least partially expose the hollow interior passageway, an interior locking mechanism disposed on an interior surface of the housing and substantially adjacent the proximal end, wherein the interior locking mechanism is configured to allow attachment of at least one surgical tool, and at least one flexible member disposed substantially adjacent the distal end. The housing is configured to accommodate placement of a surgical screw implant. The surgical screw implant is secured to the housing using a mating feature in the surgical screw implant. The at least one flexible member is configured to retain the surgical screw implant. The mating feature is configured to control axial movement of the surgical screw implant.

Claims (17)

1. A spinal stabilization system for stabilizing a spine, comprising:

a screw including a threaded shaft for engaging a vertebra and a receiving head with a passageway to receive a spinal fixation rod;

a pair of diametrically opposed recessed portions in an outer circumferential wall of the receiving head;

a screw extender including a substantially tubular section with a distal end for attachment to the receiving head and a pair of channels to guide the spinal fixation rod down the tubular section into the passageway; and

a pair of diametrically opposed flexible portions between the pair of channels and integral with the tubular section at a proximal end and including protrusions at a distal end to releasably engage the recessed portions of the receiving head and secure the screw extender to the screw, the flexible portions configured to flex relative to the housing and be biased to be flush with the tubular section in a rest position,

wherein the flexible portions are flush with an outer surface of the tubular section from a proximal fixed end to a distal free end in the rest position.

2. The spinal stabilization system of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the pair of channels extends from a proximally-facing opening to a distally-facing opening of the screw extender.

3. The system of claim 1 , further comprising a plurality of the screws attachable to a plurality of vertebrae and the screw extenders rigidly connected by the fixation rod.

4. A spinal stabilization system for stabilizing a spine, comprising:

a screw including:

a threaded shaft for engaging a vertebra and a receiving head with a passageway configured to receive a spinal fixation rod; and

a pair of diametrically opposed recessed portions in an outer circumferential wall of the receiving head; and

a screw extender including:

a substantially tubular section with a distal end for receiving the receiving head and a pair of channels to guide the spinal fixation rod down the tubular section into the passageway; and

a pair of diametrically opposed flexible members integrally formed between the pair of channels from the tubular section and biased radially inward to be flush with an outer surface of the tubular section from a proximal fixed end to a distal free end in a rest position and requiring an applied force to extend the distal free end radially outward from the tubular section in a flexed position.

5. The system of claim 4 , wherein when in the rest position, a pair of projections on the flexible members engage with the pair of diametrically opposed recessed portions of the screw to secure the screw extender.

6. The system of claim 4 , further comprising a removal tool for insertion into the screw extender with a tab disposed on a distal end configured to apply the applied force to force the flexible members radially outward into the flexed position.
