Abstract

Techniques for supporting utilization of femtocell service capabilities for services are disclosed. A network device may be configured to implement a femto services gateway. The femto services gateway may reside in a femtocell and provide application programming interfaces (APIs) to services to enable applications implementing the services to make use of functionalities of femtocell service capabilities. The APIs may be a subset of or an extended set of Open Service Access Parlay or Parlay-X APIs. The services may be either femtocell-hosted, mobile APIs network operator core network-hosted, or Internet-hosted. The femtocell service capabilities may include a framework service capability feature (SCF), a call control SCF, a user interaction SCF, a mobility SCF, a terminal capability SCF, a data session control SCF, a connectivity manager SCF, an account management SCF, a charging management SCF, a policy management SCF, a presence and availability management SCF, or a multimedia messaging SCF.

Claims (27)

1. A device for supporting utilization of femtocell service capabilities for services, the device comprising:

a processor configured to implement a femto services gateway, the femto services gateway residing in a femtocell and providing a first set of application programming interfaces (APIs) to services and a second set of APIs to a femto radio network controller (RNC) application to enable applications implementing the services to make use of functionalities of femtocell service capabilities, the second set of APIs providing a service trigger for communicating a signaling message to the femto services gateway.

2. The device of claim 1 , wherein the first set of APIs is a subset of or an extended set of Open Service Access (OSA) Parlay APIs or OSA Parlay-X APIs.

3. The device of claim 1 , wherein the services are hosted by at least one of a femtocell, a mobile network operator core network, or Internet.

4. The device of claim 1 , wherein the femto services gateway resides in a femtocell access point.

5. The device of claim 1 , further comprising at least one of a femtocell access point (FAP), a wireless local area network (WLAN) AP, a wireless personal area network (WPAN) AP, or a local gateway (LGW).

6. The device of claim 1 , wherein the femto services gateway is configured to provide a resource interface to a femto radio network controller (RNC) application.

7. The device of claim 6 , wherein the resource interface comprises a secure interface.

8. The device of claim 1 , the femtocell service capabilities comprising at least one of a framework service capability feature (SCF), a call control SCF, a user interaction SCF, a mobility SCF, a terminal capability SCF, a data session control SCF, a connectivity manager SCF, an account management SCF, a charging management SCF, a policy management SCF, a presence and availability management SCF, or a multimedia messaging SCF.

9. The device of claim 1 , wherein the services are mobile network operator core network-hosted and make use of APIs exposed both from the femtocell and a mobile network operator core network.

10. The device of claim 1 , wherein the first APIs are backhauled to the services at least in part via an IPSec tunnel.

11. A method for supporting utilization of femtocell service capabilities for services, the method comprising:

receiving, via a resource interface comprising a first set of APIs, at a femto services gateway residing in a femtocell a request from an application running on an application server to make use of functionalities of femtocell service capabilities, the functionalities of the femtocell service capabilities being offered for use to the application implementing services via a second set of APIs, the second set of APIs providing a service trigger for communicating a signaling message to the femto services gateway; and

sending, by the femto services gateway, a response to the request to the application.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein the first set of APIs is a subset of or an extended set of Open Service Access (OSA) Parlay APIs or OSA Parlay-X APIs.

13. The method of claim 11 , wherein the services are hosted by at least one of a femtocell, a mobile network operator core network, or Internet.

14. The method of claim 11 , wherein the femto services gateway resides in a femtocell access point.

15. The method of claim 11 , wherein the femto services gateway resides in a converged gateway comprising at least one of a femtocell access point (FAP), a wireless local area network (WLAN) AP, a wireless personal area network (WPAN) AP, or a local gateway (LGW).

16. The method of claim 11 , the femtocell service capabilities comprising at least one of a framework service capability feature (SCF), a call control SCF, a user interaction SCF, a mobility SCF, a terminal capability SCF, a data session control SCF, a connectivity manager SCF, an account management SCF, a charging management SCF, a policy management SCF, a presence and availability management SCF, or a multimedia messaging SCF.

17. The method of claim 11 , wherein the application is carrier network-hosted and makes use of APIs exposed both from the femtocell and a mobile network operator core network.

18. The method of claim 11 , wherein the second APIs are backhauled to the services at least in part via an IPSec tunnel.

19. The method of claim 11 , further comprising:

sending, by the femto services gateway, the response to the request on a condition that a service trigger is set; and

passing the response transparently on a condition that the service trigger is not set.

20. The method of claim 11 , wherein the femtocell interworks between session initiation protocol (SIP) messages and non-access stratum (NAS) messages.

21. The method of claim 11 , wherein the request comprises a location update request.

22. The method of claim 11 , wherein the request comprises a call setup request.
