Abstract

Systems and methods for improving battery life and transmission efficiency of mobile devices are disclosed. Some embodiments provide for application and/or context aware fast dormancy on a mobile device or user equipment (UE) and/or via a proxy server. By incorporating application and context information, e.g., when an application opens a connection, what kind of applications are present, how the application normally behaves and whether the application is running in background or transmitting background data, embodiments provide for an improved and enhanced fast dormancy operation.

Claims (29)

1. An application aware method of mobile network radio state transitioning from a higher power state to a lower power state, comprising:

providing a radio access network that receives mobile network radio signals including an information element, the radio access network further selectively transmitting a transition radio signal following receipt of the information element;

providing user equipment that transmits mobile network radio signals and that receives transition radio signals and then transitions the user equipment from a higher power state to a lower power state, wherein providing user equipment includes operating a fast dormancy optimizer that:

determines that the information element is to be sent to cause a transition from a higher power state to a lower power state based on a monitoring of a running application;

implements context awareness and learning and modifies, following the determination that the information element is to be sent, a send time at which the information element is to be sent based on said context awareness and learning; and

sends the information element, following the modification of the send time at which the information element is to be sent, at the modified send time.

2. The method of claim 1 , further including using offline learning when learning.

3. The method of claim 1 , further including using on-demand learning when learning.

4. The method of claim 3 , further including using rules in a rule set when using on-demand learning.

5. The method of claim 1 in which the information element is included in a signaling connection release indication (SCRI) request.

6. A method for operating fast dormancy on a mobile device, comprising the steps of:

implementing application monitoring and determining that an information element is to be sent to cause a transition from a higher power state to a lower power state based on the monitoring of a running application;

implementing context awareness and learning and modifying, following the determination that the information element is to be sent, a send time at which the information element is to be sent based on said context awareness and learning; and

sending the information element, following the modification of the send time at which the information element is to be sent, at the modified send time.

7. The method of claim 6 , including implementing context awareness to use statistical information gathered from the operation of the running application.

8. The method of claim 6 , including implementing learning to use historical information learned from the operation of the running application.

9. The method of claim 6 , including storing historical information in a local database.

10. The method of claim 6 , further including implementing learning as on-demand learning.

11. The method of claim 10 , further including implementing on-demand learning based on the operation of the running application.

12. The method of claim 11 , further including implementing learning by adding rules to a rule set.

13. The method of claim 10 , further including storing application profile information in a database.

14. A method for operating a mobile device, comprising the steps of:

implementing application monitoring and determining that an information element is to be sent to cause a transition from a higher power state to a lower power state should occur based on the monitoring of a running application;

implementing context awareness and learning and modifying, following the determination that the information element is to be sent, a send at which the information element is to be sent based on the context awareness and learning; and

sending the information element, following the modification of the send time at which the information element is to be sent, at the modified send time.

15. The method of claim 14 including implementing context awareness to use statistical information gathered from the operation of the running application.

16. The method of claim 14 including implementing learning to use historical information learned from the operation of the running application.

17. The method of claim 16 including storing historical information in a local database.

18. The method of claim 14 , further including implementing learning as on-demand learning.
