Abstract

The present disclosure describes a microprocessor executable diagnostic module operable to receive, from a vehicle component, a signal regarding a warning and/or error and select a destination for the signal from a plurality of destinations, the plurality of destinations comprising one or more of a vehicle input/output system to present the warning and/or error to a vehicle occupant, an emergency service provider, an emergency responder, a manufacturer of the vehicle, a service facility located in proximity to a current vehicle location, and a remotely located diagnostic service to diagnose a cause of the warning and/or error signal.

Claims (31)

1 . A vehicle, comprising:

a microprocessor executable remote control module operable to receive a request from a remote source to command a vehicle function, authenticate the requestor, and, when successfully authenticated and privileged to request the performance of the vehicle function, execute the request notwithstanding a contrary command from the vehicle operator.

2 . The vehicle of claim 1 , wherein the remote source is associated with one or more of a vehicle owner, law enforcement authority, emergency service provider, lender associated with a loan having the vehicle as collateral, and a manufacturer of the vehicle.

The vehicle of claim 1 , wherein the vehicle function is identified by a function-specific code and wherein the remote control module maps the function-specific code in a look up table indexing function-specific codes with corresponding vehicle functions to determine the requested vehicle function to be performed.

4 . The vehicle of claim 3 , wherein the requested vehicle function is one or more of accelerate, decelerate, activate, deactivate, provide current vehicle location, broadcast audible and/or visual message to vehicle operator, brake, set a maximum, vehicle velocity, and lock doors.

5 . The vehicle of claim 4 , wherein the remote control module activates a system stand-by procedure to perform the vehicle function.

6 . The vehicle of claim 1 , wherein the requestor is not privileged to request performance of the vehicle function from outside a predetermined range of a wireless network of the vehicle.

The vehicle of claim 1 , wherein the requestor is a control system of the vehicle which sends the request in response to occurrence of a trigger event, the trigger event comprising movement of the vehicle at least one of outside a defined geographical area and inside a defined geographical area.

The vehicle of claim 1 , wherein the requested vehicle function is to provide information comprising at least one of a current and/or historic speed of the vehicle, vehicle identification number, vehicle owner identity, driver's license number, vehicle insurance information, and license plate number.

The vehicle of claim 1 , wherein the remote control module authenticates the requestor by one or more of encrypted key exchange, public and private key cryptography, secure remote password, multi-factor authentication, time-based authentication, unique digital identity, closed-loop authentication, and access control service and wherein different requestors have differing sets of privileges.

A non-transient, tangible computer readable medium comprising a microprocessor executable remote control module that, when executed, receives a request from a remote source to command a vehicle function, authenticates the requestor, and, when successfully authenticated and privileged to request the performance of the vehicle function, executes the request notwithstanding a contrary command from the vehicle operator.

11 . The computer readable medium of claim 10 , wherein the remote source is associated with one or more of a vehicle owner, law enforcement authority, emergency service provider, lender associated with a loan having the vehicle as collateral, and a manufacturer of the vehicle.

The computer readable medium of claim 10 , wherein the vehicle function is identified by a function-specific code and wherein the remote control module maps the function-specific code in a look up table indexing function-specific codes with corresponding vehicle functions to determine the requested vehicle function to be performed.

The computer readable medium of claim 12 , wherein the requested vehicle function is one or more of accelerate, decelerate, activate, deactivate, provide current vehicle location, broadcast audible and/or visual message to vehicle operator, brake, set a maximum, vehicle velocity, and lock doors.

14 . The computer readable medium of claim 13 , wherein the remote control module activates a system stand-by procedure to perform the vehicle function.

15 . The computer readable medium of claim 10 , wherein the requestor is not privileged to request performance of the vehicle function from outside a predetermined range of a wireless network of the vehicle.

The computer readable medium of claim 10 , wherein the requestor is a control system of the vehicle which sends the request in response to occurrence of a trigger event, the trigger event comprising movement of the vehicle at least one of outside a defined geographical area and inside a defined geographical area.

The computer readable medium of claim 10 , wherein the requested vehicle function is to provide information comprising at least one of a current and/or historic speed of the vehicle, vehicle identification number, vehicle owner identity, driver's license number, vehicle insurance information, and license plate number.

The computer readable medium of claim 10 , wherein the remote control module authenticates the requestor by one or more of encrypted key exchange, public and private key cryptography, secure remote password, multi-factor authentication, time-based authentication, unique digital identity, closed-loop authentication, and access control service and wherein different requestors have differing sets of privileges.

19 . A method, comprising:

a microprocessor executable remote control module receiving a request from a remote source to command a vehicle function,

the microprocessor executable remote control module authenticating the requestor, and

when successfully authenticated and privileged to request the performance of the vehicle function, the microprocessor executable remote control module executing the request notwithstanding a contrary command from the vehicle operator.

20 . The method of claim 19 , wherein the remote source is associated with one or more of a vehicle owner, law enforcement authority, emergency service provider, lender associated with a loan having the vehicle as collateral, and a manufacturer of the vehicle.

The method of claim 19 , wherein the vehicle function is identified by a function-specific code and wherein the remote control module maps the function-specific code in a look up table indexing function-specific codes with corresponding vehicle functions to determine the requested vehicle function to be performed.

22 . The method of claim 21 , wherein the requested vehicle function is one or more of accelerate, decelerate, activate, deactivate, provide current vehicle location, broadcast audible and/or visual message to vehicle operator, brake, set a maximum, vehicle velocity, and lock doors.

23 . The method of claim 22 , wherein the remote control module activates a system stand-by procedure to perform the vehicle function.

24 . The method of claim 19 , wherein the requestor is not privileged to request performance of the vehicle function from outside a predetermined range of a wireless network of the vehicle.

The method of claim 19 , wherein the requestor is a control system of the vehicle which sends the request in response to occurrence of a trigger event, the trigger event comprising movement of the vehicle at least one of outside a defined geographical area and inside a defined geographical area.
