Abstract

A method of manufacturing a nozzle assembly may include the step of over molding a nozzle housing, or a portion of a nozzle housing, onto at least one nozzle component, such as an injection tube. Nozzle assemblies and flow cytometers incorporating nozzle assemblies may include any combination of straight smooth injection tubes, improved features for securing a nozzle assembly, improved features for debubbling a nozzle assembly, and aggressive orienting geometries. A method of sorting cells may include the step of magnetically coupling a nozzle assembly with a flow cytometer.

Claims (21)

1. A method of manufacturing a flow cytometer nozzle assembly comprising the steps of:

a) obtaining one or more flow cytometer nozzle components including at least one injection tube having a sample fluid flow path and a piezoelectric element;

b) injection molding a first flow cytometer nozzle housing piece;

c) over molding a second flow cytometer nozzle housing piece having a sample inlet onto the injection tube in a manner that provides fluid communication between the sample inlet and the sample fluid flow path of the injection tube;

d) assembling the first flow cytometer nozzle housing piece, the second flow cytometer nozzle housing piece and flow cytometer nozzle components into a nozzle assembly; and

e) coupling the piezoelectric element to the nozzle assembly.

2. The method of manufacturing a flow cytometer nozzle assembly as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the step of obtaining the injection tube comprises the step of molding an injection tube.

3. The method of manufacturing a flow cytometer nozzle assembly as claimed in claim 2 , wherein the injection tube is molded from a material selected from the group consisting of: ceramic, glass, and a polymer.

4. The method of manufacturing a flow cytometer nozzle assembly as claimed in claim 2 , wherein the injection tube is molded with features for orienting particles.

5. The method of manufacturing a flow cytometer nozzle assembly as claimed in claim 4 , wherein the features for orienting particles include one or more of the following: a particle orienting interior geometry, a particle orienting external geometry, a particle orienting interior taper, and a particle orienting external bevel.

6. The method of manufacturing a flow cytometer nozzle assembly as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the second flow cytometer nozzle housing piece is injection molded to form a nozzle cap having an injection stem.

7. The method of manufacturing a flow cytometer nozzle assembly as claimed in claim 6 , wherein the nozzle cap is injection molded to include a sample inlet and at least one sheath fluid inlet.

8. The method of manufacturing a nozzle assembly as claimed in claim 7 , wherein the first flow cytometer nozzle housing piece is injection molded to form nozzle base which defines a nozzle cavity that receives the injection tube.

9. The method of manufacturing a flow cytometer nozzle assembly as claimed in claim 8 , further comprising the step of securing the nozzle cap to the nozzle base such that the sheath inlet of the nozzle cap is in fluid communication with the nozzle cavity of the nozzle base.

10. The method of manufacturing a flow cytometer nozzle assembly as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the injection tube is formed in a polymer extrusion.

11. The method of manufacturing a flow cytometer nozzle assembly as claimed in claim 1 , further comprising the steps of obtaining additional flow cytometer nozzle assembly components and securing those additional flow cytometer nozzle assembly components with the flow cytometer nozzle assembly.

12. The method of manufacturing a flow cytometer nozzle assembly as claimed in claim 11 , wherein the step of securing additional flow cytometer nozzle assembly components with the flow cytometer nozzle assembly further comprises over molding a portion of the flow cytometer nozzle housing.

13. The method of manufacturing a flow cytometer nozzle assembly as claimed in claim 12 , wherein the additional flow cytometer nozzle assembly components are selected from the group consisting of: an oscillating element, a nozzle tip, a charge pin, an electrical cable, an electrical connector, a nozzle alignment mechanism, a particle alignment mechanism, a sheath inlet connector, a sheath inlet tube, a sample inlet connector, a waste tube, a metallic element, a ceramic element, an optical window, a fastener, and a seating element.

14. The method of manufacturing a flow cytometer nozzle assembly as claimed in claim 1 , further comprising the step of molding a nozzle tip, wherein the nozzle tip is dimensioned for coupling to the nozzle housing.

15. The method of manufacturing a flow cytometer nozzle assembly as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the step of injection molding a nozzle housing further comprises the steps of injection molding the nozzle housing as a single piece.

16. The method of manufacturing a flow cytometer nozzle assembly as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the step of coupling the piezoelectric element to the nozzle assembly further comprises injection over molding the piezoelectric element with a second of the one or more flow cytometer nozzle housing pieces.
