Abstract

Apparatus, methods, and other embodiments associated with a key duplication machine are described. In one embodiment, an assembly for duplicating a master key includes an optical imaging device, a logic, a clamping assembly, and a cutting member. The optical imaging device is capable of capturing an optical image of at least a portion of the master key. The logic is capable of determining a key pattern of the master key from the optical image of the master key. The clamping assembly is capable of clamping a key blank and the cutting member is capable of cutting a key pattern into said key blank.

Claims (42)

1. A key duplicating machine comprising:

a front panel having a slot to receive a key therein, said slot comprising:

a first side wall; and

a second side wall, wherein said second side wall is movable with respect to said first side wall;

a sensing device configured to capture data related to a master key;

a lower gripper and an upper gripper configured to grip a key when it is held in said slot wherein said lower gripper is positioned below said upper gripper and biased toward said upper gripper; and

a cutting member configured to cut a key pattern into a key blank.

2. The machine of claim 1 , wherein said second wall is configured to pivot about a pivot point.

3. The machine of claim 1 , wherein said second wall is biased toward said first side wall.

4. The machine of claim 1 , wherein said upper gripper is positioned above said lower gripper and biased toward said lower gripper.

5. The machine of claim 1 , wherein said front panel includes a front side and a rear side opposite said front side, wherein said panel is configured to receive a key in said slot from said front side, and wherein said lower gripper and said upper gripper are located on said rear side.

6. The machine of claim 1 , wherein, said lower gripper includes a tapered portion.

7. The machine of claim 6 , wherein said upper gripper includes a tapered portion.

8. The machine of claim 7 , wherein said upper gripper and said lower gripper each include a ledge adjacent to said tapered portions.

9. A key duplicating machine comprising:

an opening in said machine to receive a key therein;

a sensing device configured to capture data related to a key inserted into said opening;

a cutting member configured to cut a key pattern into a key blank;

a positioning mechanism configured to move a key from a first position to a second position; and

a logic configured to analyze said data to determine a position for engaging said positioning mechanism with said key.

10. The machine of claim 9 , wherein said positioning mechanism includes a first positioning finger and a second positioning finger.

11. The machine of claim 9 , wherein said logic is configured to determine whether said key has bittings cut into the key blade on one side of the key blade or two sides of the key blade.

12. The machine of claim 9 , wherein said position determined by said logic is a valley on a bittings of said key.

13. The machine of claim 12 , wherein said positioning mechanism includes a positioner with a pointed finger to engage said bittings.

14. The machine of claim 9 , wherein said position determined by said logic is two raised points on a bittings of said key.

15. The machine of claim 14 , wherein said positioning mechanism includes a positioner with a flat edge to engage said bittings.

16. The machine of claim 9 , wherein said sensing device includes an imaging device.

17. The machine of claim 16 , wherein said data related to said key includes image data.

18. A key duplicating machine comprising:

a front panel having a slot to receive a key therein, said slot comprising:

a first side wall; and

a second side wall, wherein said second side wall is movable with respect to said first side wall;

a sensing device configured to capture data related to a master key;

a lower gripper and an upper gripper configured to grip a key when it is held in said slot wherein said upper gripper is positioned above said lower gripper and biased toward said lower gripper; and

a cutting member configured to cut a key pattern into a key blank.

19. The machine of claim 18 , wherein said lower gripper is positioned below said upper gripper and biased toward said upper gripper.

20. The machine of claim 18 , wherein said second wall is configured to pivot about a pivot point.

21. The machine of claim 18 , wherein said second wall is biased toward said first side wall.

22. The machine of claim 18 , wherein said front panel includes a front side and a rear side opposite said front side, wherein said panel is configured to receive a key in said slot from said front side, and wherein said lower gripper and said upper gripper are located on said rear side.

23. The machine of claim 18 , wherein, said lower gripper includes a tapered portion.

24. The machine of claim 23 , wherein said upper gripper includes a tapered portion.

25. The machine of claim 24 , wherein said upper gripper and said lower gripper each include a ledge adjacent to said tapered portions.
