Abstract

An acoustic detector includes a cylindrical support member and a plurality of receiver elements that are disposed on a surface of the cylindrical support member. The plurality of receiver elements are configured to detect acoustic waves in a plurality of azimuthal angular directions.

Claims (14)

1 . An acoustic detector, comprising:

a cylindrical support member; and

a plurality of receiver elements disposed on a surface of the cylindrical support member, the plurality of receiver elements being configured to detect acoustic waves in a plurality of azimuthal angular directions.

2 . The acoustic detector according to claim 1 , wherein the plurality of receiver elements are configured as one-dimensional or a two-dimensional array of receiver elements disposed on a surface of a cylindrical support member.

3 . The acoustic detector according to claim 1 , the plurality of receiver elements comprise a piezo-electric film.

4 . The acoustic detector according to claim 3 , wherein the piezo-electric film comprises a PVDF film.

5 . The acoustic detector according to claim 3 , further comprising a plurality of electrodes disposed on both sides of the piezo-electric film, the electrodes being spaced apart from each other so as to leave a gap between neighboring receiver elements.

6 . The acoustic detector according to claim 1 , wherein the plurality of electrodes on the piezo-electric film are produced by etching, by vacuum depositing, or by coating a conductor material on both sides of the piezo-electric film.

7 . The acoustic detector according to claim 1 , wherein the plurality of receiver elements are configured as a one-dimensional array or a two-dimensional array of receiver elements.

8 . The acoustic detector according to claim 7 , wherein the one-dimensional array or the two-dimensional array of receivers is wrapped around the surface of the cylindrical support member so as to cover a 360 deg. detection angle.

9 . The acoustic detector according to claim 8 , wherein a row of one-dimensional array of receivers within the two-dimensional array of receivers are electronically selectable to detect the acoustic waves.

10 . The acoustic detector according to claim 1 , wherein the cylindrical substrate comprises an acoustic absorbing material.

11 . The acoustic detector according to claim 10 , wherein the acoustic absorbing material comprises an acoustic absorbing foam or silicon rubber.

12 . The acoustic detector according to claim 1 , wherein a size of the receiver elements is selected to achieve a desired azimuthal angular resolution of the acoustic wave between approximately 5 deg. and approximately 15 deg.
