Abstract

A vehicular fuel system with onboard fuel characterization including an onboard combustion modifier source capable of supplying a combustion modifier agent, such as hydrogen, and a fuel tank capable of storing a fuel. An injector-igniter is operative to direct inject the fuel and a proportionate amount of the modifier agent into a cylinder of an internal combustion engine. An engine control unit is operatively connectable to the combustion modifier source and the injector. The system may further comprise a mixing valve operative to proportionately mix the fuel and modifier agent. The combustion modifier source may be a tank containing hydrogen or a thermo-chemical reactor, for example.

Claims (31)

1. A fuel system with fuel characterization, comprising:

a thermo-chemical regenerative reactor comprising,

a reactor vessel positioned within an exhaust manifold and having an inlet for receiving fuel reactants to be preheated by exhaust gases within the exhaust manifold, and

a fluid network extending through the reactor vessel having fluid flow, wherein a combustion modifier agent is produced in the fluid network via heating provided by an inductive heater element positioned within the fluid network;

a fuel tank to store a fuel; and

an injector operatively connected to the fuel tank and the fluid network of the thermo-chemical regenerative reactor to inject the fuel and a proportionate amount of the combustion modifier agent into a cylinder of an internal combustion engine;

wherein the injector includes a first channel configured to inject the modifier agent and a second channel configured to inject the fuel, wherein the second channel is separate from the first channel.

2. The system according to claim 1 , wherein the injector is an injector-igniter.

3. The system according to claim 1 , wherein the combustion modifier agent comprises hydrogen.

4. The system according to claim 1 , further comprising an engine control unit operatively connectable to the thermo-chemical reactor and the injector.

5. A fuel system with fuel characterization, comprising:

a thermo-chemical regenerative reactor positioned within an exhaust manifold and having an inlet for receiving fuel reactants to be preheated by exhaust gases within the exhaust manifold comprising,

a reactor vessel, and

a fluid network extending through the reactor vessel having fluid flow, wherein a combustion modifier agent is produced in the fluid network via heating provided by resistive heat generation by application of voltage applied between a cathode and anode through a wall of a tube within the fluid network;

a fuel tank to store a fuel;

an injector operatively connected to the fuel tank and the fluid network of the thermo-chemical regenerative reactor to direct inject the fuel and a proportionate amount of the combustion modifier agent into a cylinder of an internal combustion engine; and

an engine control unit operatively connectable to the thermo-chemical reactor and the injector.

6. The system according to claim 5 , further comprising a mixing valve operative to proportionately mix the fuel and modifier agent.

7. The system according to claim 5 , wherein the injector includes a first channel configured to inject the modifier agent.

8. The system according to claim 7 , wherein the injector includes a second channel configured to inject the fuel, wherein the second channel is separate from the first channel.

9. The system according to claim 5 , wherein the thermo-chemical reactor is adapted for mounting onboard a vehicle.

10. The system according to claim 9 , wherein the combustion modifier agent comprises hydrogen.

11. A method of characterizing fuels for improved operation of an internal combustion engine, the method comprising:

direct injecting a first fuel into a cylinder of the engine with an injector-igniter;

generating a combustion modifier agent with a thermo-chemical reactor positioned within an exhaust manifold;

providing the engine with the combustion modifier agent in a first amount effective to improve the combustion properties of the first fuel; and

igniting the first fuel with the injector-igniter.

12. The method according to claim 11 , further comprising direct injecting a second fuel different from the first into the cylinder and providing the engine with the combustion modifier agent in a second amount effective to improve the combustion properties of the second fuel.

13. The method according to claim 11 , further comprising mixing the first fuel and combustion modifier agent prior to direct injecting the first fuel.

14. The method according to claim 11 , further comprising direct injecting the combustion modifier agent into the cylinder independently of the first fuel.

15. The method according to claim 11 , wherein the combustion modifier agent comprises hydrogen.
