Abstract

A method of forming a low moisture block with cold flow resistance proceeds by subjecting a feed mixture containing molasses-like liquids to mixing to form a homogenous mixture; dehydrating the molasses-like mixture to less than about 2.0% moisture using heating; adding to the dehydrated molasses-like liquid mixture one or more feed ingredients in dry ingredient form, comprising 10% to 50% by weight of the resulting mixture; and adding to the dehydrated molasses-like mixture a composition comprising CaO or reactive MgO or combinations thereof, with the composition comprising 0.1% to 10% by weight of the resulting mixture. The composition is mixed in to form a homogenous mixture.

Claims (32)

1. A low-moisture block that exhibits improved resistance to cold flow, the low-moisture block comprising the solidified product of a block mixture, the block mixture comprising a dehydrated molasses-containing mixture, dry feed ingredients, and CaO, wherein:

the dehydrated molasses-containing mixture comprised a molasses-containing mixture that had been dehydrated to less than 2% by weight water;

the dry feed ingredients had been mixed with the dehydrated molasses-containing mixture such that together they formed a resulting mixture, the dry feed ingredients having been added in an amount of from 10% to 50% by weight based on the weight of the resulting mixture;

the CaO and, optionally, at least one of ZnO, MnO, FeO, CuO, and Cu 2 O, (a) had been mixed with the resulting mixture only after moisture had been almost completely removed from the molasses-containing mixture and before sugar crystallization occurred, (b) had been reacted with the resulting mixture to form the low-moisture block, and (c) had been added in an amount of from 0.5% to 10.0% by weight based on the weight of the low-moisture block; and

the dehydrated nature of the molasses-containing mixture, having been dehydrated to less than 2% by weight water at the time of adding the dry feed ingredients and the CaO, provided very little free water, limited water reactions with the CaO, and drove reactions of the CaO with sugar, such that the low-moisture block exhibits improved cold flow resistance compared with the same block but having been formed with a molasses-containing mixture containing higher amounts of water such that the CaO sufficiently reacts with water to form Ca(OH) 2 .

2. The low-moisture block of claim 1 , wherein the molasses-containing mixture contains a liquid from the group consisting of cane molasses, beet molasses, condensed separator by-products (CSB), separator molasses solubles (SMS), soy molasses, and mixtures thereof.

3. The low-moisture block of claim 1 , further comprising hydrolyzed vegetable oils in an amount of from 3% to 20% by weight based on the weight of the resulting mixture.

4. The low-moisture block of claim 1 , wherein the molasses-containing mixture comprises cane molasses, beet molasses, or a mixture thereof.

5. The low-moisture block of claim 1 , wherein the CaO had been added in an amount of from 0.5% to 8.0% by weight based on the weight of the low-moisture block.

6. The low-moisture block of claim 1 , wherein the CaO had been added in an amount of from 0.5% to 3.0% by weight based on the weight of the low-moisture block.

7. The low-moisture block of claim 1 , wherein the CaO had been added in an amount of from 1.5% to 3% by weight based on the weight of the low-moisture block.

8. The low-moisture block of claim 1 , wherein the block is in a biodegradable container that comprises at least one of straw and wood fiber.

9. A low-moisture block that exhibits improved resistance to cold flow, the low-moisture block comprising the solidified product of a block mixture, the block mixture comprising a dehydrated molasses-containing mixture, dry feed ingredients, and a combination of CaO and reactive MgO, wherein:

the dehydrated molasses-containing mixture comprised a molasses-containing mixture that had been dehydrated to less than 2% by weight water;

the dry feed ingredients had been mixed with the dehydrated molasses-containing mixture such that together they formed a resulting mixture, the dry feed ingredients having been added in an amount of from 10% to 50% by weight based on the weight of the resulting mixture;

the combination of CaO and reactive MgO (a) had consisted essentially of CaO and reactive MgO, (b) had been mixed with the resulting mixture only after moisture had been almost completely removed from the molasses-containing mixture and before sugar crystallization occurred, (c) reacted with the resulting mixture to form the low-moisture block, and (d) had been added in an amount of from 0.5% to 10.0% by weight based on the weight of the low-moisture block; and

the dehydrated nature of the molasses-containing mixture, having been dehydrated to less than 2% by weight water at the time of adding the dry feed ingredients and the combination of CaO and reactive MgO, provided very little free water, limited water reactions with the CaO and reactive MgO, and drove reactions of the CaO and reactive MgO with sugar, such that the low-moisture block exhibits improved cold flow resistance compared with the same block but having been formed with a molasses-containing mixture containing higher amounts of water such that the CaO sufficiently reacts with water to form Ca(OH) 2 .

10. The low-moisture block of claim 9 , further comprising hydrolyzed vegetable oils in an amount of from 3% to 20% by weight based on the weight of the resulting mixture.

11. The low-moisture block of claim 9 , wherein the dehydrated molasses-containing mixture comprises cane molasses, beet molasses, or a mixture thereof.

12. The low-moisture block of claim 9 , wherein the percentage amount of CaO that had been added was in an amount of from 0.5% to 8.0% by weight based on the total weight of the low-moisture block.

13. The low-moisture block of claim 9 , wherein the percentage amount of CaO that had been added was in an amount of from 0.5% to 3.0% by weight based on the total weight of the low-moisture block.

14. The low-moisture block of claim 9 , wherein the percentage amount of CaO that had been added was in an amount of from 1.5% to 3% by weight based on the total weight of the low-moisture block.

15. The low-moisture block of claim 1 , wherein the dry feed ingredients comprise at least one of protein meal, vitamin, phosphate, urea, limestone, and medication.

16. A low-moisture block that exhibits improved resistance to cold flow, the low-moisture block comprising the solidified product of a block mixture, the block mixture comprising a dehydrated molasses-containing mixture, dry feed ingredients, and CaO, wherein:

the dehydrated molasses-containing mixture comprised a molasses-containing mixture comprising i) a molasses selected from at least one of cane molasses and beet molasses, and ii) hydrolyzed vegetable oil, wherein the dehydrated molasses-containing mixture contained less than 2% by weight water;

the dry feed ingredients had been mixed with the dehydrated molasses-containing mixture such that together they formed a resulting mixture, the dry feed ingredients having been added in an amount of from 10% to 50% by weight based on the weight of the resulting mixture;

the hydrolyzed vegetable oil comprised from 3% to 20% by weight based on the weight of the resulting mixture;

the dry feed ingredients comprised protein meal and at least one of vitamin, phosphate, urea, limestone, and medication;

the CaO (a) had been mixed with the resulting mixture only after moisture had been almost completely removed from the molasses-containing mixture and before sugar crystallization occurred, (b) the CaO reacted with the resulting mixture to form the low-moisture block, and (c) the CaO had been added in an amount of from 0.75% to 10% by weight based on the total weight of the low-moisture block; and

the dehydrated nature of the molasses-containing mixture, having been dehydrated to less than 2% by weight water at the time of adding the dry feed ingredients and the CaO, provided very little free water, limited water reactions with the CaO, and drove reactions of the CaO with sugar, such that the low-moisture block exhibits improved cold flow resistance compared with the same block but having been formed with a molasses-containing mixture containing higher amounts of water such that the CaO sufficiently reacts with water to form Ca(OH) 2 and make soap.

17. The low-moisture block of claim 16 , wherein the CaO had been added in an amount of from 1.5% to 8% by weight based on the total weight of the low-moisture block.

18. The low-moisture block of claim 16 , wherein the CaO had been added in an amount of from 1.5% to 3% by weight based on the total weight of the low-moisture block.
