Abstract

To determine if a pixel exhibits artifacts, statistics are generated for the pixel and its neighbors. These statistics are compared with thresholds. If the comparison of the statistics and the thresholds suggests that the pixel exhibits a pixel artifact, then recourse can be taken, either to adjust the pixel value in some way, or to reject the angle of interpolation used in computing the value for the target pixel.

Claims (47)

1. An apparatus, comprising;

a receiver to receive a first pixel angle used to interpolate an interpolated pixel and a plurality of second pixel angles used to interpolate each of a plurality of second pixels, said plurality of pixels being neighbors of said interpolated pixel;

a statistic generator to generate a statistic for said interpolated pixel using said first pixel angle and at least a subset of said plurality of second pixel angles; and

a comparator to compare said statistic with a threshold to determine if said interpolated pixel includes a pixel artifact.

2. An apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the statistic generator is operative to generate a second statistic for said interpolated pixel using said first pixel angle and a second subset of said plurality of second pixel angles.

3. An apparatus according to claim 2 , wherein the statistic generator includes a combiner to combine said statistic with said second statistic.

4. An apparatus according to claim 2 , wherein said comparator is operative to compare said second statistic with a second threshold to determine if said interpolated pixel includes a pixel artifact.

5. A method to detect a pixel artifact for an interpolated pixel in interlaced data, comprising:

receiving a first pixel angle used to interpolate the interpolated pixel;

receiving at least a second pixel angle used to interpolate at least a second pixel, the at least a second pixel being a neighbor of the interpolated pixel;

computing a statistic for the interpolated pixel using the first pixel angle and the at least a second pixel angle; and

if the statistic is greater than a threshold, determining that the interpolated pixel includes the pixel artifact.

6. A method according to claim 5 , wherein:

receiving at least a second pixel angle for at least a second pixel includes receiving at least a third pixel angle for at least a third pixel, the at least a third pixel being a neighbor of the interpolated pixel; and

computing a statistic for the interpolated pixel includes:

computing a first statistic for the interpolated pixel using the first pixel angle and the at least a second pixel angle; and

computing a second statistic for the interpolated pixel using the first pixel angle and the at least a third pixel angle.

7. A method according to claim 6 , wherein computing a statistic for the interpolated pixel further includes combining the first statistic and the second statistic to compute the statistic.

8. A method according to claim 6 , wherein determining that the interpolated pixel includes the pixel artifact includes:

if the first statistic is greater than a second threshold, determining that the interpolated pixel includes the pixel artifact; and

if the second statistic is greater than the second threshold, determining that the interpolated pixel includes the pixel artifact.

9. A method according to claim 5 , wherein

receiving at least a second pixel angle includes:

receiving the second pixel angle for the second pixel, the second pixel being a first neighbor of the interpolated pixel; and

receiving a third pixel angle for a third pixel, the third pixel being a second neighbor of the interpolated pixel; and

computing a statistic for the interpolated pixel includes computing a statistic for the interpolated pixel using the first pixel angle, the second pixel angle, and the third pixel angle.

10. A method according to claim 5 , further comprising, if the statistic is greater than a threshold, rejecting the first pixel angle for the interpolated pixel.

11. An article comprising a non-transitory, machine-accessible medium having associated data that, when accessed, results in a machine:

receiving a first pixel angel used to interpolate an interpolated pixel;

receiving at least a second pixel angle used to interpolate at least a second pixel, the at least a second pixel being a neighbor of the interpolated pixel;

computing a statistic for the interpolated pixel using the first pixel angle and the at least a second pixel angle; and

if the statistic is greater than a threshold, determining that the interpolated pixel includes a pixel artifact.

12. An article according to claim 11 , wherein:

receiving at least a second pixel angle for at least a second pixel includes receiving at least a third pixel angle for at least a third pixel, the at least a third pixel being a neighbor of the interpolated pixel; and

computing a statistic for the interpolated pixel includes:

computing a first statistic for the interpolated pixel using the first pixel angle and the at least a second pixel angle; and

computing a second statistic for the interpolated pixel using the first pixel angle and the at least a third pixel angle.

13. An article according to claim 12 , wherein computing a statistic for the interpolated pixel further includes combining the first statistic and the second statistic to compute the statistic.

14. An article according to claim 12 , wherein determining that the interpolated pixel includes the pixel artifact includes:

if the first statistic is greater than a second threshold, determining that the interpolated pixel includes the pixel artifact; and

if the second statistic is greater than the second threshold, determining that the interpolated pixel includes the pixel artifact.

15. An article according to claim 11 , wherein

receiving at least a second pixel angle includes:

receiving the second pixel angle for the second pixel, the second pixel being a first neighbor of the interpolated pixel; and

receiving a third pixel angle for a third pixel, the third pixel being a second neighbor of the interpolated pixel; and

computing a statistic for the interpolated pixel includes computing a statistic for the interpolated pixel using the first pixel angle, the second pixel angle, and the third pixel angle.

16. An article according to claim 11 , wherein the machine-accessible medium has further associated data that, when accessed, results in the machine, if the statistic is greater than a threshold, rejecting the first pixel angle for the interpolated pixel.
