Abstract

A method comprising receiving, at a computer system from a user electronic device, a media work captured by the user electronic device; extracting, using the computer system, one or more features of the captured media work; recognizing, at the computer system, at least a portion of the subject matter of the media work captured by the user electronic device based on the extracted one or more features; obtaining, at the user electronic device, instructions for an action to be performed associated with the recognized media work; and performing, at the user electronic device, the associated action.

Claims (36)

1. A method comprising:

receiving, at a computer system comprising one or more computers, from a first electronic device, a first electronic media work;

extracting, using the computer system, one or more features of the first electronic media work;

determining, at the computer system, that at least a portion of the first electronic media work corresponds to a first reference media work based on a matching of the extracted one or more features of the first electronic media work against a database of reference features extracted from a plurality of reference electronic media works including the first reference media work, using an approximate nearest neighbor search which is a sub-linear search of the database of reference features that identifies a match within a threshold of at least one of the reference features to the extracted one or more features of the first electronic media work but does not guarantee to identify the closest match to the extracted one or more features;

receiving, at the computer system from a second electronic device, a query related to the first electronic media work;

linking, by the computer system, the query to action information in an action database based upon the determining that at least a portion of the first electronic media work corresponds to the first reference media work, wherein the action information comprises information related to a URL and is related to an action to be performed at the second electronic device;

generating, by the computer system, machine-readable instructions associated with the action to be performed based at least in part on the linking of the query to the action information;

transmitting, by the computer system to the second electronic device, the machine-readable instructions; and

logging, by the computer system, an event associated with the machine-readable instructions.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first electronic media work comprises at least one of an audio work, a video, or an image.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first electronic device is at least one of a video recorder, a computer, a cell phone, or a portable device.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the action comprises presenting a user associated with the second electronic device information related to the first electronic media work.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the event is related to a geographic location at which the first electronic media work was rendered on the second electronic device.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the action is dependent, at least in part, on a geographic location at which the first electronic media work was rendered on the second electronic device.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the computer system receives data corresponding to a geographic location at which the first electronic media work was rendered on the second electronic device.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the computer system receives time information of when the first electronic media work was rendered on the second electronic device.

9. A computer system comprising:

one or more processors; and

one or more computer readable media operatively connected to the one or more processors and having stored thereon instructions for carrying out the steps of:

receiving, at the computer system from a first electronic device, a first electronic media work;

extracting, using the computer system, one or more features of the first electronic media work;

determining, at the computer system, that at least a portion of the first electronic media work corresponds to a first reference media work based on a matching of the extracted one or more features of the first electronic media work against a database of reference features extracted from a plurality of reference electronic media works including the first reference media work, using an approximate nearest neighbor search which is a sub-linear search of the database of reference features that identifies a match within a threshold of at least one of the reference features to the extracted one or more features of the first electronic media work but does not guarantee to identify the closest match to the extracted one or more features;

receiving, at the computer system from a second electronic device, a query related to the first electronic media work;

linking, by the computer system, the query to action information in an action database based upon the determining that at least a portion of the first electronic media work corresponds to the first reference media work, wherein the action information comprises information related to a URL and is related to an action to be performed at the second electronic device;

generating, by the computer system, machine-readable instructions associated with the action to be performed based at least in part on the linking of the query to the action information;

transmitting, by the computer system to the second electronic device, the machine-readable instructions; and

logging, by the computer system, an event associated with the machine-readable instructions.

10. The system of claim 9 , wherein the first electronic media work comprises at least one of an audio work, a video, or an image.

11. The system of claim 9 , wherein the first electronic device is at least one of a video recorder, a computer, a cell phone, or a portable device.

12. The system of claim 9 , wherein the action comprises presenting a user associated with the second electronic device information related to the first electronic media work.

13. The system of claim 9 , wherein the event is related to a geographic location at which the first electronic media work was rendered on the second electronic device.

14. The system of claim 9 , wherein the action is dependent, at least in part, on a geographic location at which the first electronic media work was rendered on the second electronic device.

15. The system of claim 9 , wherein the computer system receives location data corresponding to a geographic location at which the first electronic media work was rendered on the second electronic device.

16. The system of claim 9 , wherein the computer system receives time information of when the first electronic media work was rendered on the second electronic device.

17. The system of claim 9 , further comprising the step of determining, by the computer system, a number of renderings associated with the reference media work within a period of time based upon the logging.

18. The method of claim 1 , further comprising the step of determining, by the computer system, a number of renderings associated with the reference media work within a period of time based upon the logging.
