Abstract

A low profile lighting module. Devices according to this disclosure can produce a uniform light intensity output profile, limiting the perceived appearance of individual point sources, from direct lighting modules comprising several light emitting diodes. Individual lighting device components are disclosed that can contribute to this uniform profile, including: primary optics, secondary optics, and contoured housing elements. These components can interact with and control emitted light, thus adjusting its pattern. These components can alter the direction of emitted light, providing a more uniform light intensity over a wider range of viewing angle.

Claims (39)

1. A light emitting device module, comprising:

a housing comprising a reflective surface;

a plurality of light emitting diode (LED) packages each comprising an LED chip, each of said LED packages on said reflective surface and configured to emit at least some light in a lateral direction; and

a diffuser proximate to said plurality of LED packages, said diffuser arranged to interact with light emitted from said LED packages;

wherein the ratio of the distance between adjacent LED packages to the distance from said reflective surface to said diffuser is 2:1 or greater.

2. The light emitting device of claim 1 , wherein at least one of said LED packages is a sidelooker LED package.

3. The light emitting device of claim 1 , wherein at least one of said LED packages is a side mounted LED package.

4. The light emitting device of claim 1 , wherein at least one of said LED packages comprises an asymmetric reflector cup.

5. The light emitting device of claim 1 , wherein at least one of said LED packages emits light substantially symmetrically about its central axis.

6. The light emitting device of claim 1 , wherein said diffuser comprises non-uniform diffusive characteristics.

7. The light emitting device of claim 1 , wherein said diffuser comprises partially reflective, substantially opaque diffusive dots.

8. The light emitting device of claim 1 , wherein said diffuser comprises embedded isotropic disks that correlate with the positions of said at least one LED package.

9. The light emitting device of claim 1 , wherein said reflective surface is contoured.

10. The light emitting device of claim 1 , wherein said housing is elongated;

wherein at least one of said LED packages is configured to redirect at least a portion of the light in a direction along the length of said elongated housing.

11. The light emitting device of claim 1 , wherein at least one of said LED packages comprises a substantially bow-tie shaped primary optic.

12. The light emitting device of claim 1 , wherein the distance from said reflective surface to said diffuser is equal to or less than 20 mm.

13. The light emitting device of claim 1 , wherein the distance from said reflective surface to said diffuser is equal to or less than 10 mm.

14. The light emitting device of claim 1 , wherein the distance from said reflective surface to said diffuser is substantially less than the distance between adjacent LED packages.

15. The light emitting device of claim 1 , wherein the distance between adjacent LED packages is about 25 mm or greater.

16. The light emitting device of claim 1 , wherein the distance between adjacent LED packages is about 34 mm or greater.

17. The light emitting device of claim 1 , wherein said ratio is 3:1 or greater.

18. The light emitting device of claim 1 , wherein said ratio is 4:1 or greater.

19. The light emitting device of claim 1 , wherein said ratio is 4.25:1 or greater.

20. The light emitting device of claim 1 , wherein said diffuser comprises light scattering particles.

21. The light emitting device of claim 20 , wherein said light scattering particles are more concentrated in areas above an LED package.

22. The light emitting device of claim 1 , wherein at least one of said LED packages comprises a primary optic shaped to spread light in a lateral direction.

23. The light emitting device of claim 22 , wherein said primary optic comprises an at least partially cylindrical body.

24. The light emitting device of claim 22 , wherein said primary optic comprises a concave portion opposite said LED chip.

25. The light emitting device of claim 22 , wherein said primary optic comprises a truncated cone opposite said LED chip.

26. The light emitting device of claim 22 , wherein said primary optic is asymmetric.

27. The light emitting device of claim 22 , wherein the LED chip of said at least one LED package comprising said primary optic is off-center from said primary optic.

28. The light emitting device of claim 22 , wherein said ratio is 3:1 or greater.

29. The light emitting device of claim 22 , wherein said ratio is 4:1 or greater.

30. The light emitting device of claim 22 , wherein said ratio is 4.25:1 or greater.

31. The light emitting device of claim 22 , wherein each of said LED packages comprises a primary optic shaped to spread light in a lateral direction.

32. The light emitting device of claim 31 , wherein said ratio is 3:1 or greater.

33. The light emitting device of claim 31 , wherein said ratio is 4:1 or greater.

34. The light emitting device of claim 31 , wherein said ratio is 4.25:1 or greater.
