Abstract

This disclosure relates to a method, article of manufacture, and apparatus of intelligent pairing using a lookup database for snapshot based backups. In some embodiments, this includes obtaining a snapshot method, locating a source to be backed up, searching a database using the source and the snapshot method, if the searching did not find at least one matching record, locating a target device in a storage group and pairing the target device with the source, if the searching found at least one matching record, obtaining a corresponding target device from the at least one matching record and pairing the corresponding target device with the source, and performing a backup of the source using the snapshot method.

Claims (40)

1. A method comprising:

obtaining a snapshot method selected as one of a clone method enabling full point-in-time copies, and a SNAP method enabling difference-based copies;

locating a source to be backed up;

analyzing, in a server based component implementing the snapshot method, a change rate of data for the source to select an optimum snapshot backup method from a plurality of backup methods;

searching a database using the source and the selected snapshot method, wherein the selected snapshot method is selected based on an identity of the source out of a plurality of sources coupled to the server and one or more policy rules defined in the server;

if the searching did not find at least one matching record, locating a target device in a storage group using the selected snapshot method and pairing the target device with the source;

if the searching found at least one matching record, obtaining a corresponding target device from the at least one matching record and pairing the corresponding target device with the source based on the selected snapshot method; and

performing a backup of the source using the selected snapshot method.

2. A system comprising: a processor configured to obtain a snapshot method, locate a source to be backed up, analyze, in a server based component implementing the snapshot method, a change rate of data for the source to select an optimum snapshot backup method from a plurality of backup methods, search a database using the source and the selected snapshot method, wherein the selected snapshot method is selected based on an identity of the source out of a plurality of sources coupled to the server and one or more policy rules defined in the server, if the searching did not find at least one matching record, locate a target device in a storage group using rules and pair the target device with the source, if the searching found at least one matching record, obtain a corresponding target device from the at least one matching record and pair the corresponding target device with the source, and perform a backup of the source using the selected snapshot method, the selected snapshot method selected as one of a clone method enabling full point-in-time copies, and a SNAP method using copy-on-first-write copies.

3. A computer program product comprising a non-transitory computer usable medium having machine readable code embodied therein for:

obtaining a snapshot method selected as one of a clone method enabling full point-in-time copies, and a SNAP method enabling difference-based copies;

locating a source to be backed up;

analyzing, in a server based component implementing the snapshot method, a change rate of data for the source to select an optimum snapshot backup method from a plurality of backup methods;

searching a database using the source and the selected snapshot method, wherein the selected snapshot method is selected based on an identity of the source out of a plurality of sources coupled to the server and one or more policy rules defined in the server;

if the searching did not find at least one matching record, locating a target device in a storage group using the selected snapshot method and pairing the target device with the source;

if the searching found at least one matching record, obtaining a corresponding target device from the at least one matching record and pairing the corresponding target device with the source based on the selected snapshot method; and

performing a backup of the source using the selected snapshot method.

4. The method as recited in claim 1 , further comprising:

inserting at least one record into the database after performing the backup, wherein the at least one record includes a source identification associated with the source, an array identification associated with the source, a target identifier associated with a target device of the one or more target devices, the snapshot method, and a timestamp, the one or more target devices accessed by the plurality of sources for transmission and storage of source data from the source to the target device.

5. The method as recited in claim 1 , wherein the target device is part of a target device group having different types of snapshot storage, and wherein the target device is one of a clone storage and SNAP storage depending on the selected snapshot method.

6. The method as recited in claim 1 , wherein locating the source to be backed up comprises:

locating a path to be backed up; and

obtaining a list of source identifications making up the path.

7. The method as recited in claim 1 , wherein the database includes a set of records, wherein each of the record includes a source identification, a target identification, an array identification associated with the source, a type, and a timestamp recording pairing establishment, and wherein the source is associated with an array identification and a source identification.

8. The method as recited in claim 1 , wherein pairing the corresponding target device with the source comprises:

validating by locating the corresponding target device in the storage group according to rules;

pairing the corresponding target device with the source if the corresponding target device is located in the storage group according to the rules; and

locating a device in a storage group using the snapshot method and pairing the device with the source if the corresponding target device is not located in the storage group according to the rules.

9. The method of claim 1 wherein the one or more policy rules are stored in a resource database accessible to the server, and wherein the selected snapshot method is selected for a defined time period.

10. The method of claim 1 wherein the data change rate reflects real-time data population patterns in a data storage system containing the target device and coupled to the server and the plurality of sources.

11. The system as recited in claim 2 , wherein the SNAP method stores a difference of snapshots in contrast to the clone method that stores a full volume copy.

12. The method as recited in claim 7 , wherein the SNAP method uses a copy-on-first-write technique that stores a difference of snapshots in contrast to the clone method that stores a full volume copy.

13. The method as recited in claim 7 , wherein obtaining the corresponding target device from the at least one matching record comprises:

obtaining a most recent record from the at least one matching record based on the pairing establish timestamp; and

obtaining the corresponding target device from the most recent record.

14. The method as recited in claim 8 , wherein the rules specify criteria to be considered when locating the target device in the storage group.

15. The method as recited in claim 12 , wherein searching the database using the source and the snapshot method comprises:

for a record in the database, comparing the source with the source identification and the array identification and comparing the snapshot method with the type; and

locating the record if the source matches the source identification and the array identification and the snapshot matched matches the type.

16. The method as recited in claim 14 , wherein the criteria include, but not limited to, for each device with the one or more target devices, examining for a device, the storage group containing device, a visibility of the device, a state of the device, a locking status of the device, a pairing state of the device, and a type of the device.
