Abstract

A personal digital ID device provides a digital identifier to a service for a predetermined duration in response to user interaction. The user interaction may include a button press. The personal digital ID device may be in the form of a bracelet, a key fob, or other form factor. The service may be provided by a mobile device, in the cloud, or elsewhere.

Claims (65)

1. A personal digital ID device comprising:

a crypto/cipher engine having at least one digital identifier including one or more shared secret keys;

a button accessible to a user of the personal digital ID device;

a motion sensor to allow for user authentication when the personal digital ID device undergoes a predefined motion;

a radio; and

a processor coupled to the crypto/cipher engine, the button, the motion sensor, and the radio, the processor configured to validate a user through motion of the personal digital ID device;

wherein the crypto/cipher engine makes available the one or more shared secret keys to perform authentication with a cloud service in response to user interaction with the button.

2. The personal digital ID device of claim 1 wherein the crypto/cipher engine comprises a smartcard controller.

3. The personal digital ID device of claim 1 wherein the crypto/cipher engine comprises a plurality of smartcard secure elements.

4. The personal digital ID device of claim 1 wherein the crypto/cipher engine is user-removable from the personal digital ID device.

5. The personal digital ID device of claim 4 wherein the crypto/cipher engine resides on a subscriber identity module (SIM) card.

6. The personal digital ID device of claim 1 wherein the radio comprises a near-field radio.

7. The personal digital ID device of claim 6 wherein the near-field radio comprises an ISO 14443 compatible radio.

8. The personal digital ID device of claim 6 wherein the near-field radio comprises an ISO 18092 compatible radio.

9. The personal digital ID device of claim 1 wherein the radio comprises a non-near-field radio.

10. The personal digital ID device of claim 1 wherein the radio comprises a near-field radio and a non-near-field radio.

11. The personal digital ID device of claim 1 further comprising a flexible housing to allow the personal digital ID device to be worn as a personal accessory.

12. The personal digital ID device of claim 11 wherein the flexible housing includes a bracelet shape.

13. A bracelet comprising:

a housing formed to encircle a user's wrist;

a crypto/cipher engine having at least one digital identifier including one or more shared secret keys;

a button accessible to a user of the personal digital ID device;

a motion sensor to allow for user authentication when the bracelet undergoes a predefined motion;

a radio; and

a processor coupled to the crypto/cipher engine, the button, the motion sensor, and the radio, the processor configured to validate a user through motion of the bracelet;

wherein the crypto/cipher engine makes available the one or more shared secret keys to perform authentication with a cloud service in response to user interaction with the button.

14. The bracelet of claim 13 wherein the crypto/cipher engine comprises a smartcard secure element.

15. The bracelet of claim 13 wherein the radio comprises a near-field radio.

16. The bracelet of claim 13 wherein the radio comprises a non-near-field radio.

17. A personal digital ID device that includes a radio, a user accessible hardware-based interaction component, a motion sensor to allow user validation through recognition of a predetermined motion of the personal digital ID device, and a smartcard secure element providing identity authentication to a cloud service through a mobile device over a radio link that is available for a predetermined duration only when a user interacts with the hardware-based interaction component.

18. The personal digital ID device of claim 17 further comprising a housing in the shape of a bracelet.

19. The personal digital ID device of claim 18 wherein the radio comprises a near-field radio.

20. The personal digital ID device of claim 18 wherein the radio comprises a non-near-field radio.

21. The personal digital ID device of claim 17 wherein the user accessible hardware-based interactive component comprises a button.

22. A personal digital ID device comprising:

a crypto/cipher engine having at least one digital identifier including one or more shared secret keys;

a button accessible to a user of the personal digital ID device;

a motion sensor to allow for user authentication when the personal digital ID device undergoes a predefined motion;

a radio; and

a processor coupled to the crypto/cipher engine, the button, the motion sensor, and the radio, the processor configured to validate a user through motion of the personal digital ID device and to turn on the radio in response to user interaction with the button;

wherein the crypto/cipher engine performs encryption using the one or more shared secret keys to perform authentication with a cloud service.

23. A personal digital ID device comprising:

a crypto/cipher engine having at least one digital identifier;

a button accessible to a user of the personal digital ID device;

a motion sensor to allow for user authentication when the personal digital ID device undergoes a predefined motion;

a radio; and

a processor coupled to the crypto/cipher engine, the button, the motion sensor, and the radio, the processor configured to validate a user through motion of the personal digital ID device and to turn on the radio in response to user interaction with the button;

wherein the crypto/cipher engine makes available the at least one digital identifier to perform mutual authentication with a cloud service using a public key method.

24. A bracelet comprising:

a housing formed to encircle a user's wrist;

a crypto/cipher engine having at least one digital identifier including one or more shared secret keys;

a button accessible to a user of the personal digital ID device;

a motion sensor to allow for user authentication when the bracelet undergoes a predefined motion;

a radio; and

a processor coupled to the crypto/cipher engine, the button, the motion sensor, and the radio, the processor configured to validate a user through motion of the bracelet;

wherein the crypto/cipher engine performs encryption using the one or more shared secret keys to perform authentication with a cloud service.

25. A bracelet comprising:

a housing formed to encircle a user's wrist;

a crypto/cipher engine having at least one digital identifier;

a button accessible to a user of the personal digital ID device;

a motion sensor to allow for user authentication when the bracelet undergoes a predefined motion;

a radio; and

a processor coupled to the crypto/cipher engine, the button, the motion sensor, and the radio, the processor configured to validate a user through motion of the bracelet;

wherein the crypto/cipher engine makes available the at least one digital identifier to perform mutual authentication with a cloud service using a public key method.

26. A personal digital ID device that includes a radio, a user accessible hardware-based interaction component, a motion sensor to allow user validation through recognition of a predetermined motion of the personal digital ID device, and a smartcard secure element providing identity authentication to a cloud service through a mobile device over a radio link that is available only after a user interacts with the hardware-based interaction component.
