Abstract

The present application relates to techniques and equipment to manufacture mailpieces containing inserts. The equipment can be an inserter or an envelope wrapper that collects documents and inserts on a collating track before the material is inserted into an envelope by inserting equipment or wrapped with paper or film to make an envelope by wrapping equipment. More specifically, the present application relates to a rotary insert feeder that feeds inserts to a collating track on inserting or wrapping type equipment.

Claims (32)

1. A method for initializing a rotary insert feeder for processing of a plurality of inserts, the method comprising steps of:

measuring a length of a first insert delivered from a vacuum belt assembly to a collating track, the collating track comprising a bottom plate with leading and trailing pusher pins with a predetermined spacing therebetween, wherein the pusher pins protrude upwardly through channels in the collation track bottom plate;

calculating, by way of a control processor, a distance between a trailing edge of the first insert, placed on the collation track with its leading edge positioned behind the first leading pusher pin, using the measured length of the first insert and the predetermined spacing between leading and trailing pusher pins;

determining a new rotary insert feeder position relative to the collation track pusher pins, based on the calculated distance and a desired distance;

adjusting, by way of the control processor, the rotary insert feeder to the determined position; and

feeding a second insert from the vacuum belt assembly to the collating track such that a second distance between a trailing edge of the second insert and a second trailing pusher pin is equal to the desired distance.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the establishing step further comprising the step of:

the control processor using encoder pulses to calculate the determined rotary insert feeder position.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the measuring step includes measuring the first insert by way of a photocell positioned along the path of insert travel of the rotary feeder which precedes the vacuum belt assembly.

4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising the step of:

transporting the first insert, by way of a vacuum belt, to the collation track after gripper assemblies have released a leading edge of the first insert and after the trailing edge of the first insert passes beyond a vacuum chamber which ends the vacuum to the vacuum belt.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the determined rotary insert feeder position produces a distance of about ½ inch between the trailing edge of the second insert and the second trailing pusher pin.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the feeding of the second insert includes:

feeding the second insert from the vacuum belt assembly positioned above the collation track.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first insert is transported on the collating track by a plurality of trailing pusher pins.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the second insert is transported on the collating track by a plurality of trailing pusher pins.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first and second inserts are processed downstream by wrapping or inserting equipment.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein the step of determining the new rotary insert feeder position results in a drum of the rotary insert feeder being offset from an initial position for a remainder of an inserting job.

11. The method of claim 10 , wherein drum position is determined by a hall-effect sensor associated with a magnet attached to the drum.

12. Non-transitory computer readable medium having executable instructions stored thereon, which when executed by a computer cause the computer to perform the steps of claim 1 .

13. A system for initializing a rotary insert feeder for processing of a plurality of inserts, the system comprising:

a rotary insert feeder for feeding the plurality of inserts to a collating track of document processing equipment, the collating track comprising a bottom plate with leading and trailing pusher pins with a predetermined spacing therebetween, wherein the pusher pins protrude upwardly through channels in the collation track bottom plate;

a programmed control processor associated with the rotary insert feeder and the collating track configured to perform the following steps:

measuring a length of a first insert delivered from a vacuum belt assembly of the rotary insert feeder to the collating track,

calculating a distance between a trailing edge of the first insert, placed on the collation track with its leading edge positioned behind the first leading pusher pin, using the measured length of the first insert and the predetermined spacing between leading and trailing pusher pins;

determining a new rotary insert feeder position relative to the collation track pusher pins, based on the calculated distance and a desired distance;

adjusting, by way of the control processor, the rotary insert feeder to the determined position; and

feeding a second insert from the vacuum belt assembly to the collating track such that a second distance between a trailing edge of the second insert and a second trailing pusher pin is equal to the desired distance.

14. The system of claim 13 , further comprising an encoder, wherein the control processor is configured to use encoder pulses to calculate the determined rotary insert feeder position.

15. The system of claim 13 , further comprising a photocell positioned along the path of insert travel of the rotary feeder which precedes the vacuum belt assembly, wherein the first insert is measured by way of the photocell.

16. The method of claim 13 , wherein the determined rotary insert feeder position produces a distance of about ½ inch between the trailing edge of the second insert and the second trailing pusher pin.

17. The system of claim 13 , further comprising wrapping or inserting equipment, wherein the first and second inserts are processed downstream by the wrapping or inserting equipment.
