Abstract

A method for generating a stereoscopic presentation of a region-of-interest in a monoscopic information representation. The method includes the steps of: (a) selecting first and second viewpoints for the region-of-interest; (b) creating a lens surface having a predetermined lens surface shape for the region-of-interest, the lens surface having a plurality of polygonal surfaces constructed from a plurality of points sampled from the lens surface shape; (c) creating first and second transformed presentations by overlaying the representation on the lens surface and perspectively projecting the lens surface with the overlaid representation onto a plane spaced from the first and second viewpoints, respectively; and, (d) displaying the first and second transformed presentations on a display screen to generate the stereoscopic presentation.

Claims (47)

1. A method for presenting an image with a graphical user interface (“GUI”), the method comprising:

causing a display of a detail-in-context presentation including a stereoscopic lens in the image, wherein a focal region of the stereoscopic lens is at a first height above portions of the image outside of the stereoscopic lens; and

causing a display of a lens control icon of the GUI at a second height above the portions of the image outside of the stereoscopic lens in the detail-in-context presentation,

wherein the lens control icon is configured to allow control of a characteristic of the focal region of the stereoscopic lens,

wherein the first height and the second height are not zero, and

wherein the characteristic of the focal region comprises at least one of a magnification of the entire focal region or a size of the focal region.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

adjusting the second height of the lens control icon;

rendering the lens control icon from a left-eye viewing volume; and

rendering the lens control icon from a right-eye viewing volume.

3. The method of claim 1 , further comprising adjusting the second height of the lens control icon with a height lens control element in the GUI.

4. The method of claim 3 , wherein the GUI further comprises an indication of a possible level of control for the second height of the lens control icon.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first height and the second height are different from each other.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the characteristic of the focal region comprises the magnification of the entire focal region.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the characteristic of the focal region comprises the size of the focal region.

8. A data processing system comprising:

a processor and memory having instructions that are executable by the processor to cause the data processing system to perform operations comprising:

causing a display of a detail-in-context presentation including a stereoscopic lens in an image, wherein a focal region of the stereoscopic lens is at a first height above portions of the image outside of the stereoscopic lens; and

causing a display of a lens control icon of a graphical user interface (“GUI”) at a second height above the portions of the image outside of the stereoscopic lens in the detail-in-context presentation,

wherein the lens control icon is configured to allow control of a characteristic of the focal region of the stereoscopic lens,

wherein the first height and the second height are not zero, and

wherein the characteristic of the focal region comprises at least one of a magnification of the entire focal region or a size of the focal region.

9. The data processing system of claim 8 , wherein the instructions are executable by the processor to further cause the data processing system to perform operations comprising:

adjusting the second height of the lens control icon;

rendering the lens control icon from a left-eye viewing volume; and

rendering the lens control icon from a right-eye viewing volume.

10. The data processing system of claim 8 , wherein the instructions are executable by the processor to further cause the data processing system to perform operations comprising:

adjusting the second height of the lens control icon with a height lens control element in the GUI.

11. The data processing system of claim 10 , wherein the GUI further comprises an indication of a possible level of control for the second height of the lens control icon.

12. The data processing system of claim 8 , wherein the first height and the second height are different from each other.

13. The data processing system of claim 8 , wherein the characteristic of the focal region comprises the magnification of the entire focal region.

14. The data processing system of claim 8 , wherein the characteristic of the focal region comprises the size of the focal region.

15. At least one computer-readable storage device including instructions executable to cause a data processing system to:

cause a display of a detail-in-context presentation including a stereoscopic lens in an image, wherein a focal region of the stereoscopic lens is at a first height above portions of the image outside of the stereoscopic lens; and

cause a display of a lens control icon of a graphical user interface (“GUI”) at a second height above portions of the image outside of the stereoscopic lens in the detail-in-context presentation,

wherein the lens control icon is configured to allow control of a characteristic of the focal region of the stereoscopic lens,

wherein the first height and the second height are not zero, and

wherein the characteristic of the focal region comprises at least one of a magnification of the entire focal region or a size of the focal region.

16. The at least one computer readable storage device of claim 15 , further comprising instructions executable to cause the data processing system to:

adjust the second height of the lens control icon;

render the lens control icon from a left-eye viewing volume; and

render the lens control icon from a right-eye viewing volume.

17. The at least one computer readable storage device of claim 15 , further comprising instructions executable to cause the data processing system to adjust the second height of the lens control icon with a height lens control element in the GUI.

18. The at least one computer readable storage device of claim 17 , wherein the GUI further comprises an indication of a possible level of control for the second height of the lens control icon.

19. The at least one computer readable storage device of claim 15 , wherein the first height and the second height are different from each other.

20. The at least one computer-readable storage device of claim 15 , wherein the characteristic of the focal region comprises the magnification of the entire focal region.

21. The at least one computer-readable storage device of claim 15 , wherein the characteristic of the focal region comprises the size of the focal region.
