Abstract

A superstrate, such as a sheet of polymer film, is used as a transport during metallization of solar cells. The back sides of the solar cells are attached to the sheet of polymer film. Contact holes are formed through the sheet of polymer film to expose doped regions of the solar cells. Metals are formed in the contact holes to electrically connect to the exposed doped regions of the solar cells. The metals are electroplated to form metal contacts of the solar cell. Subsequently, the solar cells are separated from other solar cells that were metallized while supported by the same sheet of polymer film to form strings of solar cells or individual solar cells.

Claims (22)

1. A system for metallization of solar cells, the system comprising:

a transport comprising a sheet of polymer film; and

a plurality of solar cells having back sides attached to a continuous portion of the sheet of polymer film, the continuous portion of the sheet of polymer film serving as the transport during metallization of the plurality of solar cells;

wherein metal contacts of the plurality of solar cells are formed through the sheet of polymer film while the plurality of solar cells are still attached to the continuous portion of the sheet of polymer film.

2. The system of claim 1 wherein the sheet of polymer film comprises polyimide.

3. The system of claim 1 wherein each of the plurality of solar cells comprises a sliver of a silicon wafer and has a front side surface from along a thickness of the wafer.

4. The system of claim 1 wherein the sheet of polymer film supports the plurality of solar cells during electroplating of the plurality of solar cells to form the metal contacts.

5. The system of claim 1 wherein the sheet of polymer film supports the plurality of solar cells during etching of the plurality of solar cells to form contact holes in the plurality of solar cells.

6. The system of claim 1 wherein the sheet of polymer film supports the plurality of solar cells during formation of metals in the contact holes.

7. The system of claim 1 wherein the sheet of polymer film supports the plurality of solar cells during formation of a mask over the back sides of the plurality of solar cells.

8. A system, comprising:

a superstrate; and

a plurality of solar cells having back sides attached to a continuous portion of the superstrate, the continuous portion of the superstrate configured to provide mechanical support to the plurality of solar cells;

wherein metal contacts of the plurality of solar cells are formed through the superstrate while the plurality of solar cells are still attached to the continuous portion of the superstrate.

9. The system of claim 8 wherein the superstrate comprises a white reflector configured to trap light.

10. The system of claim 8 wherein the superstrate comprises a moisture barrier.

11. The system of claim 8 wherein the superstrate comprises a polymer film configured to provide adhesion between the superstrate and the plurality of solar cells.

12. The system of claim 8 wherein the superstrate comprises a cloaking tape.

13. The system of claim 8 wherein the superstrate is resistant to chemicals used during a metallization process.

14. The system of claim 12 wherein the superstrate is resistant to hydrofluoric acid.

15. The system of claim 12 wherein the superstrate is plating resistant.

16. The system of claim 8 further comprising an organic adhesive configured to bond the back side of a solar cell to the superstrate.
