Abstract

A system and method of providing a dynamic optical network topology according to topology determinations made by a network control is disclosed. The system and method includes optical ports on an optical circuit switch system operably connected to a plurality of server groups, and optical ports on the optical circuit switch system operably connected to a plurality of packet processing nodes. The system and method also includes at least one memory and at least one processor to execute network control software to receive input comprising a bandwidth request, determine an output comprising a preferred optical link topology for the optical circuit switch system based on the received input, convert the optical link topology for the optical circuit switch system into optical circuit switch port mapping, and send the optical circuit switch port mapping to the optical circuit switch system and to the packet processing nodes.

Claims (32)

1. A method of configuring an optical circuit switch system in a data center comprising:

receiving, by a network control module, a bandwidth request from at least one server group of a plurality of server groups communicatively coupled to the optical circuit switch system;

determining, by the network control module, an optical link topology for the optical circuit switch system based on the received input data;

converting, by the network control module, the optical link topology for the optical circuit switch system into an optical circuit switch port map; and

sending the optical circuit switch port map to the optical circuit switch system and to a plurality of packet processing nodes communicatively coupled to an optical port of the optical circuit switch system, wherein for each server group with at least one server network interface communicatively coupled to the optical circuit switch, all server network interfaces on the server group are communicatively coupled to the optical circuit switch system.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the optical circuit switch system includes a non-blocking optical circuit switch such that any functional optical port on the optical circuit switch can communicate with any other functional optical port on the optical circuit switch.

3. The method of claim 2 , further comprising:

reconfiguring, by the network control module, an optical switch in the optical circuit switch system based on the optical circuit switch port map.

4. The method of claim 3 , wherein reconfiguring the optical switch comprises transmitting a control signal to a piezo-electric actuator to alter the orientation of an optical beam.

5. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

determining a preferred oversubscription ratio for the optical circuit switch system; and

converting the optical link topology into the optical circuit switch port map based on the preferred oversubscription ratio.

6. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

determining, by the network control module, that a second server group requires maintenance;

converting, by the network control module, the optical link topology for the optical circuit switch system into an updated optical circuit switch port map that does not include any port communicatively coupled to the second server group; and

sending the updated optical circuit switch port map to the optical circuit switch system and to a plurality of packet processing nodes communicatively coupled to an optical port of the optical circuit switch system.

7. A non-transitory computer readable storage medium having instructions encoded thereon which, when executed by at least one processor, cause the at least one processor to perform a method of configuring an optical circuit switch system in a data center, the method comprising:

receiving a bandwidth request from at least one server group of a plurality of server groups communicatively coupled to the optical circuit switch system;

determining an optical link topology for the optical circuit switch system based on the received input data;

converting the optical link topology for the optical circuit switch system into an optical circuit switch port map; and

sending the optical circuit switch port map to the optical circuit switch system and to a plurality of packet processing nodes communicatively coupled to an optical port of the optical circuit switch system, wherein for each server group with at least one server network interface communicatively coupled to the optical circuit switch, all server network interfaces on the server group are communicatively coupled to the optical circuit switch system.

8. The non-transitory computer readable storage medium claim 7 , wherein the optical circuit switch system includes a non-blocking optical circuit switch such that any functional optical port on the optical circuit switch can communicate with any other functional optical port on the optical circuit switch.

9. The non-transitory computer readable storage medium claim 8 , wherein the method further comprises:

reconfiguring an optical switch in the optical circuit switch system based on the optical circuit switch port map.

10. The non-transitory computer readable storage medium claim 9 , wherein reconfiguring the optical switch comprises transmitting a control signal to a piezo-electric actuator to alter the orientation of an optical beam.

11. The non-transitory computer readable storage medium claim 7 , wherein the method further comprises:

determining a preferred oversubscription ratio for the optical circuit switch system; and

converting the optical link topology into the optical circuit switch port map based on the preferred oversubscription ratio.

12. The non-transitory computer readable storage medium claim 7 , wherein the method further comprises:

determining, by the network control module, that a second server group requires maintenance;

converting, by the network control module, the optical link topology for the optical circuit switch system into an updated optical circuit switch port map that does not include any port communicatively coupled to the second server group; and

sending the updated optical circuit switch port map to the optical circuit switch system and to a plurality of packet processing nodes communicatively coupled to an optical port of the optical circuit switch system.
