Abstract

A chuck with a generally cylindrical body having a tail section configured to receive a drive shaft of a driver and a nose section having an axial bore formed therein. A plurality of jaws is movably disposed with respect to the body. A threaded spindle is rotatably connected to the body and operatively engages the jaws. A first ring is fixedly mounted about the body and has a first plurality of teeth. An inner sleeve is rotatably mounted about the tail section and has an open portion. A second ring that has at least one protrusion that mates with the corresponding open portion and extends outwardly from the inner sleeve and the ring has a second plurality of teeth. An outer sleeve is placed concentrically around the inner sleeve and contains a lock groove that the protrusion of the second ring is situated inside the lock groove.

Claims (33)

1. A chuck for use with a manual or powered driver having a rotatable drive shaft, the chuck comprising:

a generally cylindrical body having a tail section and a center axis, the tail section being configured to rotate with the drive shaft and the body defining an axial bore;

a plurality of jaws movably disposed with respect to the body;

a first annular array of locking teeth non-rotatably and axially fixed to the body;

a lock ring including a second annular array of locking teeth, the lock ring being axially movable with respect to the body, the first locking teeth and the second locking teeth being configured so that when the second locking teeth engage the first locking teeth, the first locking teeth and the second locking teeth prevent the lock ring from rotating in an opening direction with respect to the body;

a generally cylindrical sleeve rotatably mounted about the body, the sleeve being in operative communication with the jaws so that rotation of the sleeve in a closing direction moves the jaws toward the center axis of the body and rotation of the sleeve in the opening direction moves the jaws away from the center axis of the body, the lock ring being non-rotatably fixed with respect to the sleeve; and

a camming surface being in operative communication with the lock ring, the camming surface being rotatable with respect to the lock ring between a first rotational position and a second rotational position,

wherein the second locking teeth are disengaged from the first locking teeth when the camming surface is in the first rotational position and the second locking teeth engage the first locking teeth when the camming surface is in the second rotational position.

2. The chuck of claim 1 , wherein the lock ring further comprises at least one tab extending radially outwardly from an outer perimeter thereof.

3. The chuck of claim 2 , wherein the sleeve further comprises at least one axially extending slot defined therein, the at least one slot slidably receiving the at least one tab of the lock ring.

4. The chuck of claim 2 , wherein the second locking teeth extend axially forward from the lock ring.

5. The chuck of claim 1 , wherein the camming surface is in operative communication with the at least one tab of the lock ring.

6. The chuck of claim 1 , wherein the camming surface is rotationally fixed to a first ring.

7. The chuck of claim 6 , wherein the first ring further comprises a substantially cylindrical outermost sleeve.

8. The chuck of claim 1 , further comprising a threaded spindle rotatably connected to the body and in driving engagement with the jaws so that rotation of the threaded spindle in the closing direction moves the jaws toward the center axis and rotation of the threaded spindle in the opening direction moves the jaws away from the center axis.

9. The chuck of claim 8 , wherein the threaded spindle is non-rotatably fixed to the sleeve.

10. A chuck for use with a manual or powered driver having a rotatable drive shaft, the chuck comprising:

a generally cylindrical body having a tail section and a center axis, the tail section being configured to rotate with the drive shaft and the body defining an axial bore;

a plurality of jaws movably disposed with respect to the body;

a first plurality of locking teeth non-rotatably and axially fixed to the body;

a generally cylindrical sleeve rotatably mounted about the body, the sleeve being in operative communication with the jaws so that rotation of the sleeve in a closing direction moves the jaws toward the center axis of the body and rotation of the sleeve in the opening direction moves the jaws away from the center axis of the body;

a lock ring including a second plurality of locking teeth, the lock ring being axially movable with respect to the body, the first locking teeth and the second locking teeth being configured so that when the second locking teeth engage the first locking teeth, the first locking teeth and the second locking teeth prevent the lock ring from rotating in an opening direction with respect to the body, the lock ring being non-rotatably fixed with respect to the sleeve; and

a camming member being in operative communication with the lock ring, the camming member being rotatable with respect to the lock ring between a first rotational position and a second rotational position,

wherein the second locking teeth are disengaged from the first locking teeth when the camming surface is in the first rotational position and the second locking teeth engage the first locking teeth when the camming surface is in the second rotational position.

11. The chuck of claim 10 , wherein the lock ring further comprises at least one tab extending radially outwardly from an outer perimeter thereof.

12. The chuck of claim 11 , wherein the sleeve further comprises at least one axially extending slot defined therein, the at least one slot slidably receiving the at least one tab of the lock ring.

13. The chuck of claim 10 , wherein the first plurality of locking teeth further comprises a first annular array of locking teeth.

14. The chuck of claim 11 , wherein the second locking teeth extend axially forward from the lock ring.

15. The chuck of claim 14 , wherein the camming member further comprises a first ring defining a camming surface.

16. The chuck of claim 15 , wherein the camming surface is in operative communication with the at least one tab of the lock ring.

17. The chuck of claim 16 , wherein the first ring further comprises a substantially cylindrical outermost sleeve.

18. The chuck of claim 10 , further comprising a threaded spindle rotatably connected to the body and in driving engagement with the jaws so that rotation of the threaded spindle in the closing direction moves the jaws toward the center axis and rotation of the threaded spindle in the opening direction moves the jaws away from the center axis.

19. The chuck of claim 18 , wherein the threaded spindle is non-rotatably fixed to the sleeve.
