Abstract

Cells present in processed lipoaspirate tissue are used to treat patients, including patients with renal conditions, diseases or disorders. Methods of treating patients include processing adipose tissue to deliver a concentrated amount of stem cells obtained from the adipose tissue to a patient. The methods may be practiced in a closed system so that the stem cells are not exposed to an external environment prior to being administered to a patient. Accordingly, in a preferred method, cells present in processed lipoaspirate are placed directly into a recipient along with such additives necessary to promote, engender or support a therapeutic renal benefit.

Claims (21)

1. A method for treating a renal disorder associated with ischemia in a subject, comprising:

identifying a subject with impaired renal function; and

administering to the subject an amount of a concentrated population of adipose-derived regenerative cells comprising adipose-derived stem cells and endothelial progenitor cells sufficient to improve function of the kidney of said patient, wherein at least 0.1% of the concentrated population of adipose-derived cells are stem cells, and wherein said concentrated population of adipose-derived regenerative cells is obtained by acquiring an adipose tissue sample, separating away adipocytes and connective tissue, and washing and concentrating said adipose-derived regenerative cells.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the renal disorder associated with ischemia is identified by assessing serum creatinine levels.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the renal disorder associated with ischemia is identified by assessing blood urea nitrogen levels.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the renal disorder associated with ischemia is identified by assessing serum chemistry profiles.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the renal disorder associated with ischemia is identified by urinalysis.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the renal disorder associated with ischemia is identified by assessing glomerular filtration rate.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the subject is provided the concentrated population of adipose-derived regenerative cells within 12 hours after renal failure.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the subject has post-surgical traumatic injury.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the concentrated population of adipose-derived regenerative cells is not cultured before being provided to the patient.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein the concentrated population of adipose-derived regenerative cells is autologous.

11. The method of claim 1 , wherein the renal disorder associated with ischemia comprises acute tubular necrosis.

12. The method of claim 1 , wherein the renal disorder associated with ischemia comprises atherosclerotic renal artery stenosis.

13. The method of claim 1 , wherein the administration comprises intravascular or intra-arterial administration.

14. The method of claim 1 , wherein the administration comprises administration to the subject's renal vasculature.

15. The method of claim 1 , wherein the concentrated population of adipose-derived regenerative cells is allogeneic.

16. The method of claim 1 , wherein said concentrated population of adipose-derived regenerative cells further comprises an additive.

17. The method of claim 16 , wherein said additive is selected from the group consisting of a disaggregation agent, an immunosuppressive agent, and an angiogenic factor.

18. The method of claim 16 , wherein the additive reduces the likelihood of adverse reaction on infusion of the concentrated population of adipose-derived regenerative cells into the subject.

19. The method of claim 1 , wherein said concentrated population of cells comprising adipose-derived stem cells is cryopreserved.
