Abstract

Multifunctional structures and methods of manufacturing multifunctional structures which function as both electronic devices and load-bearing elements are disclosed. The load-bearing elements are designed to have electronic functionality using electronics designed to be load-bearing. The method of manufacturing the multifunctional structure comprises forming an electronic element directly on at least one ply of arbitrarily shaped load-bearing material using conventional lithographic techniques and/or direct write fabrication techniques, and assembling at least two plies of arbitrarily shaped load-bearing material into a multifunctional structure. The multifunctional structure may be part of an aerospace structure, part of a land vehicle, pan of a watercraft or part of a spacecraft.

Claims (7)

1. A method of manufacturing an arbitrarily shaped multifunctional structure, the method comprising:

providing a plurality of arbitrarily-shaped load-bearing plies, wherein the plurality of arbitrarily-shaped load-bearing plies comprise a top ply layer, a middle ply layer, and a bottom ply layer;

forming at least one electronic element directly onto a top or bottom surface of the middle ply layer without employing any intervening layer using a direct-write or lithographic technique; and

coupling the bottom ply layer to the bottom surface of the middle ply layer and the top ply layer to the top surface of the middle ply layer such that the plurality of arbitrarily shaped load-bearing plies are disposed in adjacent close contact with each other to form a multifunctional structure having an exterior and an interior, wherein the electronic element is disposed within the interior of the multifunctional structure,

wherein the multifunctional structure is both an electronic device and a load-bearing element.

2. A method of claim 1 , wherein the multifunctional structure is conformal.

3. A method of claim 1 , wherein the multifunctional structure is flexible.
