Abstract

The present invention relates to methods for producing high levels of alcohol during fermentation of plant material, and to the high alcohol beer produced. The method can include fractionating the plant material. The present invention also relates to methods for producing high protein distiller's dried grain from fermentation of plant material, and to the high protein distiller's dried grain produced. The method can include drying a co-product by ring drying, flash drying, or fluid bed drying. The present invention further relates to reduced stack emissions from drying distillation products from the production of ethanol.

Claims (23)

1. A fermentation method comprising:

dry fractionating plant material comprising endosperm into components including fiber, germ and endosperm;

separating the germ and fiber components of the fractionated plant material to form a remaining portion which includes the endosperm;

reducing the size of particles in the remaining portion to form a reduced portion, wherein more than 50% of the particles fit through a sieve with a 0.5 mm mesh;

mixing the reduced portion with liquid comprising stillage; and

fermenting the reduced portion in a reaction mixture under acidic conditions to form an aqueous component comprising ethanol and a solid material, wherein the reaction mixture comprises acid stable fungal alpha amylase, glucoamylase and yeast.

2. A method of producing distiller's dried grains (DDG) and/or distiller's dried grains plus solubles (DDGS), the method comprising:

dry fractionating plant material comprising endosperm into components including fiber, germ and endosperm;

separating the germ and fiber components of the fractionated plant material to form a remaining portion which includes the endosperm;

reducing the size of particles in the remaining portion to form a reduced portion, wherein more than 50% of the particles fit through a sieve with a 0.5 mm mesh;

mixing the reduced portion with liquid comprising stillage; and

fermenting the reduced portion in a reaction mixture under acidic conditions to form an aqueous component comprising ethanol and a solid material, wherein the reaction mixture comprises acid stable fungal alpha amylase, glucoamylase and yeast; and

removing the aqueous component comprising ethanol and drying the solid material to produce distiller's dried grains and/or distiller's dried grains plus solubles.

3. A method of fermenting corn into a fermentation product comprising the steps of:

dry fractionating the corn into a fractionated corn comprising a fiber component, a germ component and an endosperm component;

inducing cavitation or disruption in the fractionated corn;

separating at least a portion of the germ component and at least a portion of the fiber component of the fractionated corn so that the fractionated corn substantially comprises the endosperm component;

mixing the fractionated corn with liquid comprising stillage;

simultaneously saccharifying and fermenting the fractionated corn substantially comprising the endosperm component in an aqueous composition under conditions to form the fermentation product, wherein the simultaneous saccharifying and fermenting step comprises a reaction mixture comprising fractionated corn, said liquid comprising stillage, acid stable fungal alpha amylase, glucoamylase and yeast; and

thereby producing a fermentation product.

4. A method for producing ethanol from ground corn which method comprises:

providing an aqueous composition comprising stillage and further comprising ground corn sized such that more than 50% of the ground corn passes through a 0.5 mm screen, an fungal acid amylase and a glucoamylase under conditions which produce glucose including a pH of 3 to 6, a temperature of 25° C. to 40° C., and a solids content 20 to 50 weight percent; and

fermenting the glucose in the presence of a yeast under conditions which produce ethanol wherein said conditions include a pH of 3 to 6 and maintaining a glucose concentration in the aqueous composition of less than 1 weight percent after 12 hours of fermentation, wherein said method produces at least 18 volume percent ethanol.
